Hi...
How many of you fellow 4.6L drivers have experienced increasing tire noise? I have about 19500 miles on my 2009 4.6L 18 inch Dunlops...and have noticed the tire noise getting progressively worse from about 15000 miles. A friend had a similair issue on his 2009...and finally replaced them. He complained to Hyundai via his local dealer and was given $400 check to help off set the replacement cost.

The noise sounds like I have blocky mud-bog truck tires on....the noise is terrible and getting louder with time.

These Dunlop tires were a very poor selection by Hyundai...they are simply CRAP Tires.

I am looking at either Michlens or Goodyears to replace the Dunlops. The Dunlops are poor tires in my opinion. Why Hyundai didn't spec Michlen or similiar is beyond me.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Same miles and same noise. Just noticed the tires are starting to blister as well. Going to talk to my dealer tomorrow.

I never had noise problems with the Dunlop Sport SP 5000m tires. At least nothing like what you guys described. HOWEVER, at 26100 miles, and although they still had 4/32 tread left on them, (2/32 before the wear bars show) one of the tires started to give me the "thump thump" that happens when there is a broken belt. I hated to put on new tires as I still had 2/32 before they became illegal, but I decided to bite the bullet and purchased new tires.

My 09 Gen has about 13,000 miles. I notice there is more tire noise than before. This just started get more noticeable about a month ago.

I had a rapid increase in tire noise - a "singing" or whine - so I rotated tires to see if I could isolate the noise down to two tires. A little investigation around these OEM Dunlops and I found out just how poorly rates they are... looks like a bad choice for a tire.

To all...

I took my Genny to the dealer for examination of the tires at 19800 miles. Remaining tread was 4/23 to 7/32...not worn out...but getting close. Service manager advised that around 20-22K tire life on Genny's was about average. LF had a broken belt; RR had a broken belt; fronts had outer edge cupping....maybe a bit to much toe-in. No relief was offered. I replaced them with 235-50ZR-18 Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus, and had an alignment done. The Michelins have very good ratings by those who purchased them for similar cars...BMW; Acura; Lexus...etc. Very agressive tread pattern....but looks like they are excellent for wet and snow conditions....the ratings reflect this as well.

Overall....the Dunlops are absolutely junk tires. Hyundai should be ashamed to put such crap tires of such a great car. Obviously the purchasing guys at Hyundai made a cost decision.....which was a bad decision.

I have 16,285 miles on my Dunlop 5000M tires and they are completely worn out! My Genesis 4.6 is only a year old and while I drive fast on the interstate, most miles were around town. I ive in North Miami and am unaware if Miami's heat played a role in the tire quickly wearing out. When I first got the car I researched the tires and all reviews said the tires were crap with them being prone to hydroplaning. Neither my dealer nor Hyundai of North America were willing to swap the tires when new. I will go back to my dealer on 7/28/10 to complain once again.
After much research on Tire Rack.com I chose as replacement tires Continentals
extreme DW for a Summer high performance tire. It is highly recommended if you don't have to worry about driving in snow.

I bought my Genesis in Feb 2010, toward the end of winter. On the strength of the many comments in this forum I have purchased a second set of wheels and mounted Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires for next winter. When those come off in the spring I plan to replace the Dunlops with Continentals.

Mine got more noisier every day after about 10,000 miles. I replaced 'em with Goodyear Eagle GT which should take me to the end of my lease in six months.

This may be naive but don't the tires come with some type of warranty from Dunlop themselves? If not wouldn't the fact that they are wearing out prior to the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty have them be covered?

I have a 2010 and all this talk of how bad these tires are is worrying.

DG, I notice that the Continentals sell for a lot less than say Bridgestone and Michelin. What is their reputation for wear and handling?

Dear Fellow Genesis Owners,

With your consistant opinions regarding the Dunlop 5000M tires I called my Dealer to question whether they or Hyundai were willing to pick up the cost of replacing my Dunlop tires. I told them they could see your comments if needed. I am happy to report that Hyundai of North America agreed to pay for two of my new Continental Extreme DW tires. The dealer in turn, agreed to mount, balance and include a 4-wheel alignment on their part. Altogether a very fair compromise for having to replace a poor choice of tire for original equipment.
The new Continentals are quiet, smooth, good handling, and highly rated for wet driving. If you want an all season tire, I recommend the Continental Extreme DWS (dry, wet, snow).
Happy motoring! :D

Fwiw, those are the wear bars on the tires - they are bars in the grooves at 2/32 tread depth and make that noise so you know its time for new tires. Its on all tires as an aural indicator, so don't hold that against the Dunlops.

That said, I'm getting ready to replace mine and I'm at 23k mi. I will not be buying Dunlops to replace them.

I don't think OE tires come with mileage warranties... Either way, would you want new Dunlops on your car?

The funny thing is, my Genesis came with a Kumho tire booklet in the glove box and Kumhos are the OE tire in Korea - I think HMNA decided Kumhos weren't "upmarket" enough and swapped them with these Dunlops. I'd rather have Kumho Solus tires.

Some Dunlop sales guy somewhere is banking some cash. Seems more and more are ending up OE on new cars...even my Honda Goldwing comes with 'em OE. But...not everyone likes them and, at least on the bike, they wear quickly and are noisy. I'm thinking something along the line of Michelin Semmetry / Pilot HX MXM4 when it's time to change. I don't drive the Indy circuit but do love a smooth-n-quite ride. I have the Semmetry on a Pontiac G6 and (sad to say) that little 4-banger rides smoother and quieter (on some roads 'round Chicago!!) than Genny.

Sayantsi....

I am a 30+ year member of SAE and an engineer. The wear strips were not a factor on my tire noise. I had between 4/32 and 7/32 tread depth. Two of my Dunlops had broken belts, and other two had outer edge feathering due to poor factory alignment. I replaced my very poor quality Dunlops with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and had the Genny aligned to my tolerances within the specs. Now it is very good. Shame on you Hyundai.
