  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Yeah I am very new to the online chat/forum stuff. When I signed up for the forum I was unaware on how it all worked . It's all good no worries. I have nothing to hide!@#🙂

I have a '13 R-spec and yet to get under the car yet but I'll be due for a oil change in another 300 miles or so, so soon I will be.

Reading all these posts about these panels (of which I'm familiar with from other vehicles) and trying to retro fit factory panels with access doors has got me thinking, has no one tried making their own all this time?

Seems to me you could cut up the factory panel, put a simple hinge and lock on it to make your own. Any reason this is not practical other than one not being mechanically inclined?

Jonsgen... That thought has crossed my mind.. Just have not been really motivated as of yet to put much thought into a door hinge type access panel design(using the existing panels) for both the filter and oil drain plug.. I am a bit more comfortable in the building construction arena... Not so much with automotive.. Except for simple routine maintenance items.. Seems Hyundai engineers did not give that design much thought until maybe the 18 model year... And maybe that was intentional in an effort to have more owners take their vehicles to dealers to oil change services and whatever else they could get an owner to pay for

Of course they did! Lol.

Well I have a decent mechanical/constructive background so I may very well give this a try and see what happens.

Seems simple/harmless enough.

It really does and If you do.. Would you possibly be willing to share pics and what materials you might use with this forum as I will guess there are quite a few members here who might appreciate a well thought out "design " option to give those interested in changing their own oil a choice other than fully removing the 2 panels or taking it to a dealer. I think it will be a split vote no matter what...lol Thanks

They probably thought of it when dealers complained and the price of an oil change would be included in the car price for 3 years.

OTOH, many members of this forum are an exception. Most luxury car buyers pay for service rather than crawl under. I don't know the percentages, but I bet many more Fusion and Corolla owner DIY than G80 or G90 owners.

I absolutely will although I cant promise that I'll get really fancy with it.

Obviously the easiest thing would be to re-use the sections of plastic cut out as the "hatches" to get access. Clean them up of course. But you could also get something like 16-18 gauge sheet aluminum and use that in place of the plastic. The hinge and lock I already have some fairly simple ideas on.

I'll keep you good folks updated but just keep in mind I'm not a shop, just a determined guy wanting to make his oil changes as easy as possible. ;)

That's probably very true.

But now that earlier models are becoming financially feasible for layman (like me) they'll probably more folks willing to tinker a bit more.

I actually came from a '12 Fusion to my '13 R-spec

Hey Wavy...For my 16 3.8(I purchased it gently used from a guy in Fla with 13K in August 2019)..ebay has 3 oil filters(genuine Hyundai) for 34.95 free shipping.I have also seen the Hyundaiparts site and it is not bad either IMO...I also watch Walmart/costco for Mobil1(5W30) oil specials...seems like if I can get it for around 5 bucks a qt give or take...I will buy some to have when needed..Have changed all the oil in my vehicles over the past 45 years until this one...with the needed removal the bottom "panels"and the associated clip fasteners/small bolts...I took it in oct to my local Hyundai dealer who quoted me a price of 40.00 to do the labor and filter(I supplied the oil)..so now as I get a bit older this may be the route I take when oil changes are due.Do you do your own oil changes on your 3.8?? and do you have to deal with the lower body panels?

A mechanic friend of mine does my oil changes, but the goal is to transition into doing it myself. Also, thanks for the info I ended up getting a deal on a Mobil 1 pack at BJs

Have any posters to this thread thought of using a fluid exchange transfer pump? Check out the post 'G80 under-body panels on a 2015 Genesis 5.0 for easier oil changes', page 3. Any thoughts on this method?
