  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What oil type does Hyundai recommend for the 4.6 version? What oil change interval is recommended? Is oil filter reachable from under hood?

Welcome aboard, okc329! Thank you for signing up! Since this is an engine-specific question, I've moved it into the appropriate forum.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The owner's manual recommends 5w-20 with 5w-30 and 10w-30 as acceptable alternates.

As for the oil filter on the 4.6 I'm not certain where it's located. I know on the 3.8 it's right under the plastic cover on top of the engine.

Does anyone know if Hyundai uses Synthetic on the Genesis? Also would dealer oil changes be synthetic?

Synthetic is not used by Hyundai on either the 3.8 or the 4.6

I use M1 5-30 since I already use it on my other cars. On the 4.6 the oil filter is under the engine. You have to remove the under cover. Search the forum for "oil filter" and you'll find pictures.

The 4.6 takes 6.5 to 7.0 quarts (depending on how much you drain out of the bottle <grin>)

When I had my oil and filter changed 5500 miles ago, the technician put in 6.5 quarts of the Mobil-1 that I supplied, and returned 0.5 quarts to me. After a couple days, because I was about to take a trip to Penfield (and Lake George) I checked the oil and saw that it was very slightly low, so I added the 0.5 quarts. It has stayed correct to now.

BTW, Dealers use bulk Group II regular oil for their normal oil changes. If you want the best, you must bring your own oil, assuming your dealer will allow you to do so.

Note: Unlike most people, I insist on being able to see the car when the oil is being changed. Yesterday, I checked out my closest dealer and found that not only could the customer not go in the service area to watch, the customer can't even stand outside the door, as the door is closed due to air conditioning. That settles that. My selling dealer allows me to watch, (from outside the door) and (if need be) talk with the technician. (the tech has shown me, and given me a lot of great information). As I told the tech, when dealers use bulk oil, not only don't I know what is in their lines, (dealer can say anything they want)even the dealer does not know what is in those lines, as their jobber may be cheating them. When I have them use my own oil, (Mobil-1 [Group-IV] or QS Horsepower or Pennsoil Platinum or Castrol Syntec [all Group III]), I know what is going in there.

I've had dealers "make errors" doing oil changes for me had I not caught them doing it. (NOT Hyundai Dealers, but two different GM Dealers). A couple times, (before I supplied my own oil) when I asked for oil out of bottles, not bulk, I saw that they were going to use the wrong weight oil. Another time, a dealer was about to install an aftermarket filter. (Oh, if you wanted a factory filter, you should have said so, to the Service Writer, and it will cost you more - WTF - from a dealer?). I pay for the dealer labor and factory filter, and I don't mind doing so. (My Hyundai Dealers Service Department is GREAT, and treats me like a king <grin>)

Many dealers also have Synthetics, and its ok to use the dealers synthetics, normally Mobil-1 but sometimes another brand, however, ALWAYS WATCH THEM.

Although I "only" have 5500 miles on this oil change, I will be getting it changed soon, as long as I don't go over the 7500 mile OCI that Hyundai wants as the maximum. Don't want warrenty problems if or when I ever have problems. On my Continental, because it is out of warranty, I change the oil/filter every 10,000 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first. My last change was with Castrol Syntec 0W-30 which is the only Syntec that is a Group IV PAO, made in Germany. (All the other Syntecs are Group III Hydrocracked - good, but not as good as Group-IV) When I go to Europe, I lease cars that the owners manual says to change the oil every 30,000km which is 18,750miles. All synthetics in Europe are either Group-IV PAO or Group-V Esters.

Would the car take 8 quarts? I know it will, but will over-filling it hurt? I took the car in for service a couple of weeks ago and after looking at the receipt, it says 8 quarts. Checked the dipstick (with a cold car) and it looks high. Taking it back to the dealer tomorrow, for a minor armrest issue! I will ask them to see what story I get. Will report what they say!:(

Do not overfill the crank case:eek: This can damage the engine as there is not enough room for all the moving parts especially the crank.

Sort of what I was thinking. I am not a real technical car guy, but I know enough. Enough to know that when you overfill something, the results aren't good. Too much pressure maybe? Definitely not enough room! :(

On the way out the door to the dealer right now! Will post results later on today!

Back from dealership. Asked about the oil. Was told that the car takes a little over 7 quarts. Of course, if they use one drop out of a bottle, you get billed for it. So I got billed for 8 quarts. Mentioned that others have said 6 - 6 3/4 quarts. But they insisted it was closer to 7. Oh well. We'll see how it goes.

My understanding is that the V8 takes 6.9 quarts. I got my information from here (scroll down to "Capacities" heading). I'm not sure where this website gets it's information from (I'm assuming it's the manufacturer), but it has comprehensive, updated references for most vehicles available in North America in the last 30 years. I found it useful.

I purchased 7 quarts of Amsoil XL 5W-20 Synthetic which was added at the vehicle's second oil change (~5000 miles) by the dealer. They had no problem using my oil and got us in and out fairly quick. They didn't return any oil to us and didn't ask to add any more, so I'm assuming the 6.9 quarts reference from above is pretty close. Our next oil change won't be until the 11k-12k miles.

OBCT . . . . thanks for that link. I feel a little more comfortable now. I was worried, as no sooner than I got home from getting the oil changed, two days later the check engine light comes on. See: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=3606. That was my reason for hitting the dealership today. Of course I thought the excess oil and the check engine light were related somehow.
