Oil type recommendation for 2015 3.8 AWD

Hi All,

I am sure this has been covered before but I wanted to double check here and make sure there is nothing wrong with me. I went for the first oil change at the dealership where I purchased the car since it was free and asked the guy to upgrade the oil to synthetic and I will pay the difference. He asked me if my Genesis is 3.6... (first red flag). I said no, it is 3.8. Then he said that since it is 3.8 it will be more than regular oil change since there is more oil that goes into the motor(I paid the same $$ for he oil change in my 3.3 Azera and 2.4 Sonata. Second red flag?). He also said that he wouldn't recommend doing synthetic as it also needs to be changed every 3,500 miles... (another red flag?). At this point I agreed to the free regular oil change but I want to change to synthetic oil next time and keep it that way. I want to buy my own oil and do it at the independent shop. Why would this guy tell me that synthetic needs to be changed in same intervals as regular? Now, I also plan bothering Hyundai in the future about engine startup rattle (like I did with my Azera and they ended up replacing long block) but want to make sure that they wont have a problem that I didn't do oil changes with them... What are your thoughts? Thank you.

Just buy your filters from Hyundai, keep the receipts for your records and have another shop change your oil. My last car was a Sonata that blew 2 engines which were replaced under warranty and I did all my own oil changes at 6000 mile intervals using synthetic since it was a turbo. Of course when the first engine blew their first comment was "I bet you have an aftermarket filter on there". I said nope it’s a OEM Hyundai and I have my receipts. Not another word after that. As for the oil changes on the 3.8 costing more, they do as it uses over 6 quarts of oil. I had chest pains when they quoted me a full synthetic change on the Genesis. You can also just bring in your own synthetic oil and have them just charge you for the service. And the 3500 mile intervals is for severe use. 6500-7500 for normal driving using synthetic is pretty standard and when I bought my Genesis they scheduled my first oil change at 7500 and that's what I have been going by ever since.

There is something wrong with him. I won't judge you though. Not yet anyway.

Never was a 3.6 engine though there was a 4.6.
The 3.8 takes 7.29 quarts of oil.

There is a reason he told you oil has to be change at that interval. The more changes, the more money they make. Some dealers try to throw everything at you that they can. The interval for normal service is 7500 miles, the severe service is 3750.

If you use an independent or do your own changes, keep receipts and note it in the maintenance log or www.myhyundai.com and you are covered.

Clearly, this dealer needs a better service writer, one that has a clue.

I buy the cheapest available full synthetic, and OEM filter, or splurge and get a K&N only if its cheaper than OEM on amazon. this motor doesn't see anything outside of normal operating range so no need to blow your money on exotic unicorn oil.

I buy my own Mobil One at Wally World and OEM filter and Asheville Hyundai charges $14 to do an oil change. Bargain, considering all the clips, doodads, and screws holding the panels on the bottom of the car. I'm sure any sane independent shop would charge way more.

Yea, sounds like dude didn't want to change your oil so he fed you some BS to get you out of there. Its not bad to change the oil your self, you can use a mighty vac and draw the oil out from the dipstick hole, and you can get the filter from up top as well. If you go as far as replacing that big panel underneath to a 2017 and above you get the extra small door you can remove to change the filter without removing all the panels.

To be honest, I still change my synthetic oil no more than 4k miles. I change my oil early because I believe in keeping fresh oil in my engine, therefore I do not run my oil until it is very contaminated. I only use synthetic oil due to its slipperiness and cleaning agents, not for the synthetic oil resistance to break-down from long term use.

I personally would not have anyone like that mechanic change your oil since he does not even knows the engine well enough to know the engine type or specs, so mostly likely he does not even know how much oil to put in the engine or the proper oil filter to use. I would just change my own oil or just take it to the dealership.

Wow. I would not go to that dealership if the techs are not familar with the engine names or displacement. Just me.

Perhaps not the tech, but some service writer that never looked under the hood of a car. Some get a commission for selling extra service too. I ran into that at one dealer where the guy told me a particular service was not needed (it was in the manual), but tried to sell me injector cleaning.

I agree. The job was done the right way and surprisingly my interior was clean when I received the car back. I usually need to wipe down the seat, steering wheel and armrests. Next time, I will just ask them if I can bring my own oil and will not get into the conversation with this service adviser... Again, thank you all for your feedback!

Make sense. Service managers probably never had to do actual work on the actual engines and only know just enough about them to give customer misinformation.

I am in the similar area looking for a dealer for my Genesis. I am thinking either Napleton's Valley Hyundai or Ettleson Hyundai. Any ideas what's going price at dealer for the oil change?

Not sure about the price. There are couple dealerships that I like but none of them are perfect...

Patrick Hyundai - service adviser does not know what he is talking about and tries to sell you blinker fluid. Service was great and car technician didn't get my car's interior dirty. I noticed that the oil they use is brighter than for example Elgin Hyundai which makes it easier to see the color shifting.

Elgin Hyundai - very quick oil changes but out of all my service visits there was only one when they didn't get my interior dirty. I also paid for tire rotation and they never did it. I came back to tell them that and service adviser said that I lied so I took him outside and showed him my marks ( usually put a mark on front rims in a hidden spot just in case) to prove him that it has never been done. He didn't apologize for accusing me of lying but took the car and did the rotation.

Pugi Hyundai - Service adviser does not want to help you unless you just need the oil change. I bought my Azera and wanted them to inspect the rattle. They would always say that they don't hear anything and that the car operates as normal. I asked one of the technicians outside to replicate the rattle for him and I was able to. He heard it and told me what is wrong which I already knew (timing chain tensioner) we then went back to the service adviser to tell him about the issue and I left the car overnight. The next day they called and said that there is nothing wrong with the car....

McGrath Hyundai - I think this is one of the best service departments in Chicagoland area (although I don't go there as I am never in the area anymore...). I dropped of the car for the oil change and asked to inspect for the rattles. The next day they called and said that the hear the rattle and they will drop the oil pan. If there are metal particles in the oil pan, they will replace the engine. Couple hours later they called and said that they ordered new engine. 31 days later (remanufactured engine was on back order so we had to wait...) I picked up my car with new long block and no rattles (unfortunately rattle came back after putting 12k miles on the engine). They did outstanding job!

I buy cars from Napleton's and I service them there too. I bring my own oil (Mobil 1 full synthetic....I only use this specific brand since 2002 on all my cars) I don't remember exact the price, but something around 40 dollars, that includes their OEM oil filter.

Looks like I found my dealer for service. I will have to get the oil in sale and negotiate prices with them but the first one i will just do it there.

Better yet.....they'll let you watch the mechanic opening a jug of oil and pouring it. I do that every time and they're fine with that.

Based on what I have researched, mostly on this forum, I started using 5w30 full synthetic. My 2012 3.8L Genesis takes 5.5qts according to the manual but I just changed the oil and filter and a 5qt jug filled it up. No need for the extra 1.2qt. I have bought OEM filter off of Amazon and other brand filters at the local parts store in the past.

Note: Since changing to the 5w30 oil, instead of 0w oil, we haven't heard the rattle or knock on start-up that we used to experience. We only have approx 46k miles on our car. Very low mileage! I only have 106k on my 2006 Mazda3 and 67k on my 2002 Silverado and less than 6k on each of my two 2012 motorcycles.
