If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On the fence with trading in for Sonata

It sounds like the old adage about buying the first year of any car model. My 2010 has been bullet proof.

I would have to agree with you.

I find the Genesis absolutely fabulous. I just surprised my wife by upgrading her 2006 Sonata to the 2011 Sonata SE. I drove it for a couple days and, while it is a great car, absolutely cannot be compared to the Genesis. I like the Sonata, but I love the Genesis.

My neighbor just closed a deal for a 2011 Sonata SE today. He brought it home during his test drive and asked me for my opinion. I started it and sat in it this afternoon for a few minutes. Not even close to the Genesis. Cute car for the price. If I was in the market for a mid-level family car, I'd give it a shot. But it is not in the same class as the Genesis, even with the perceived and real flaws discussed at length on this forum.

I am blown away that anyone would compare a Genesis and a Sonata. Clearly someone is missing the real value of the Genesis. I traded a Lexus LS 430 in on the Genesis and never looked back. Are you telling me that the Sonata is as good as the Lexus? I use mid grade in my 4.6 and get 24 around town and 28 on the road doing 80 mph.

I didn't read that anyone was attempting to equate the Sonata with the Genesis. They are not in the same class of car, so any comparison would have to be heavily weighted to one cars strengths to be meaningful.

24 MPG in true city driving in a 4.6 Genesis is unlikely. 24 MPG in this car requires at least a fair mix of freeway driving - no one is getting 24 MPG in stop and go traffic. 28 MPG @ 80MPH sounds about right. I was able to average almost that in both my Geneis' at highway speeds with the cruise control on.

As soon as this snowy weather breaks, Im gonna put it up for sale. I will just drive my truck until I figure out what I want to get. I only have 14K miles and its spotless, so hopefully I can sell it private party at a decent price.

I just cannot imagine getting rid of the Genesis for a Sonata. 2 completely different cars in different price ranges.

With that said. if my Genesis suffered from a lot of reliability issues, I'd probably opt for a Honda Accord, if I just wanted some simple reliable wheels.

I just traded my Genesis for a Sonata Hybrid -- it is a step down but way better MPG.

My other car is an Honda Accord -- I like the Sonata about the same overall but again, WAY better MPG. Accord gets around 28 MPG and my Sonata is over 40.

I have a 2010 Honda Accord and a 2011 Sonata Hybrid - My wife and I both like the Sonata better than the Accord - less noise, more features and power plus way better gas mileage. Just an honest opinion.

Yes, I made that post over a year ago, and my Genesis has been completely trouble free. So, no worry about reliability of Hyundai products anymore.

With that said, I am not fond of the new Sonata Styling. But, I recently saw a new Kia Optima that looked mighty fine. If I wanted to 'downsize' from a Genesis, which I don't!

I think there is a big difference between trading a 2009 Genesis for a Sonata, instead of a 2010/2012 Genesis. The 2009 Genesis definitely has some suspension issues compared to changes made in 2010 (additional changes made in 2012). I know this first hand because I spent about $1650 to upgrade my 2009 suspension to 2010 specs (actually 2011, but they are the same as 2010).

The other issue is size. Some people are physically small enough to easily fit into a Sonata, and some aren't. A loaded Sonata for those who are comfortable with the smaller size is not a bad decision IMO, especially if one can trade a 3-year-old Genesis for brand new Sonata without any additional cash or liabilities.

I just received a very nice marketing brochure from Hyundai for the 2012 Azera. Looks mighty nice - if I wanted a FWD drive car I'd take a close look at this one. I drove an Azera for 4 years before I got the Genesis and I liked it a lot. I wouldn't go back at this point, but the new Azera looks terrific to me.

The driving dynamics of the new Azera are supposed to be superb vs. the Buick Century-like ride of the previous generation Azera.

i totally agree.
i had a 2010 accord coupe V6. the main reason for getting rid of it was the road noise and rattles coming from the rear of the car.
i've read that starting in 2012 model year, honda cars and CRV are becoming more quiet, but of course they still can't compare to the genesis.

I looked at the 2011 Sonata a little less than a year ago. The dealer had a used 09 v6 Genesis on the lot so I took it for a spin. After driving both vehicles back to back, there was no way I was going to purchase the Sonata.

I know the Sonata has an above average quiet cabin in its class, but there was no comparison with the Genesis. Immediately noticeable was the Genesis was so much quieter inside and the ride was much better. Then, I really liked the rear wheel drive feel and handling.

I was sold. A few months later I purchased a new 2012. There is no comparison between these two vehciles.

Sonatas are nice vehicles, but they are run of the mill. You see them everywhere. I like that the Genesis is not a common car on the road. Most people don't even know what kind of car it is. One of my friends always asks me I if I drove the Bently (because of the rear wings).

The resale of the Genesis is better than that of a Mercedes or BMW. Do a comparison in depreciation percentage. The Genesis depreciates less.

I really liked the 2012 Mercedes E350, but the Genesis was faster, more fuel efficient and for the cost savings I could have bought a Sonata to go with it.

anyone bitching about hyundai depreciation clearly has never owned any german premium brands. go buy a mercedes or bimmer (that often ends up $10-20k more than MSRP w/ just a few options) and see what kind of depreciation you get. LOL:rolleyes:

btw the OP must've been joking about his first post.. trade in a genesis for a sonata?? sonata is a good car but it's a $20k FWD econobox. a few extra options in a econobox = still a ecobox.

I wouldn't say that a Sonata Limited is an econobox, and it definitely does not cost only $20. Not talking about a base model. Have you driven the new ones?
