  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The auto hold feature is enabled by a button on the console behind the shifter.

Question: Can it be permanently enabled?

From my experience so far, you have to enable it everytime you start the car, which seems a bit silly.

It seems like one of the more useful of the many, many options on this car, but why have to turn it on every time you go for a drive?

Unless you live in a city of hills and have trouble coordinating pedals, I see very little use for it. I have driven the car 8500 miles so far without ever feeling a need to engage it.

But, can it be permanently enabled?

That is my preference

No - and I use it all the time as it is a nice feature! It would be nice if it could be defaulted (along with other things like drive mode).

In googling the subject, I noticed that many people wanted to toggle the brake auto hold feature on for longer periods of time - but it seems you're right - they built it the way they built it.

And, I seriously doubt that so many people are having trouble "coordinating pedals", whatever that means. And at least the buttons for both that feature and drive mode are prominent.

Am I missing something here? from what I can see/figure out the auto hold just holds the brakes for you while your at a stop. I can do that at a traffic light/ stop sign very easily with my right foot then when I want to go I just remove the foot from the brake and push the throttle.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I just make a habit of setting drive preference and auto hold when I start the car. I like knowing I am turning it on.

I used mine a couple of times just to see how it works. It's nice if you want to take your foot off the brake at a light without shifting into park (e.g. to flex your knee on a long drive), but it's not something I use on most drives.

Yes, you are missing something here! It's a CONVENIENCE feature - you can take your foot completely off the brake after you come to a complete stop. It's nice when stuck at long lights and in traffic. It can also makes for faster takeoffs if you want to as you can rest your foot lightly on the gas pedal and ready to accelerate since the auto hold disengages as soon as you step on the gas! Not sure why you seem to have an issue with this? It's actually a very nice little feature!

I agree. this is a convenience feature and I always use it all the time. You will miss it if you are using it in a place like NYC wherein traffic is a part of everyday commute.:)

In stop and go traffic it is a blessing. All it really does is engage the parking brake when it senses a complet stop and then disengages when you apply the gas. Great feature however I would not want this always active. Defaulting to OFF when the car is shut down is the right way of implementing this IMHO.

I see so I am not missing anything, its just a personal preference thing.

I agree with who ever said for long drives lots of stop and go traffic this would be nice as it gives you a chance to stretch without putting the car in park.

Thanks for all the positive responses (well, almost all).

In my case, the Genesis is a "country car" ( my city car is a Sonata). And I go to the mountains a lot where the "auto hold" feature is nice.

Why is it strictly a "one-off" function which defaults to "off"? In my experience, when a car manufacturer does something quirky, it's usually for safety/legal reasons. They are scared to death of big bucks lawsuits, and perhaps a feature like this, if permanently "on" is perceived as a safety risk. A similar example would be cruise control. All cars auto disable it a half dozen ways to avoid collisions. Anyway, that's my analysis.

As was pointed out, I too find it handy when waiting in line at the drive through. I'm pretty well coordinated and still find it useful.

Live in the city and do mostly surface street driving. Love this feature as it makes stop and go traffic a little easier to bear. Use it 50% of the time and like the fact that the button is so easy to reach. Don't think i'll want it on by default though (my preference).

Permanent is a bad idea! Matter of fact I don't use it anymore after a bad experience at the car wash, I had it on and got on the carwash bay tracks put the car in neutral and bang car starts jumping up and down cause the brakes were set. I panic and couldn't get the damn thing off being that the tracks were trying to pull the car. NEVER AGAIN!

A couple of things would be nice to have a memorey. Like the auto brake hold, drive mode and if you shut the compass on the rearview mirror. Everything goes back to default when you restart the car.... I could live with it but would be nice if.you.can set preferences.

I grew up on a three-on-the-tree, and taught my son to drive in a Mustang 5.0 5-speed manual, so no, I don't have any trouble whatsoever with pedals or clutches. And I do like and use the auto-hold feature all the time.

That's a good example of why default on is not a great idea - I never thought of that. Thanks!
