  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everybody

I have a small paint chip on the trunk hood, and so I decided to use my appearance protection to fix it on my G70.
And the cost prom Hyundai service is going to charge 800 something and I am covered for 400 something. They are going to repaint the whole thing.
My question is that too much for that kind of repaint and probably just repainting the chip will be enough?

There are people that can make that chip go away. There are people that can make that chip go away today and in a year it is replaced by a rust spot. Problem is, you don't know if you got the good guy or the bad guy until you have a problem. Full repaint solves the problem.

In any case, get a second opinion from a detail shop with experience. None of us can see it to give a good recommendation.

Repaint the whole thing!? No way! If it’s a small chip you can easily fix it with something like Dr. ColourChip. I would be hesitant on repairing it myself only because you already paid for the appearance package. If you already paid for the package they should fix it. But if you have to pay more than $100 extra, I’d recommend you fix it yourself. Super simple fix for a small chip. Anywhere from 5 min to 1hr (most of that is waiting for paint to dry).

How often do you get a paint chip? If it is once a year it is quite expensive, 800 CAD, and even once in 3 years

I have my G70 protected with PPF on high impact areas. Therefore, I don't really get chips. I have fixed 2 chips with Dr. ColorChip though, 1 by the rear quater panel and 1 on the rockers. Super easy.

I have fixed relatives' vehicles though. 7 year old SUV with probably 7-9 chips. 2 year old sedan, 1 chip.

The other reason a full repaint MIGHT not be a good idea is colour matching the repaint to the rest of the car. If you don't want to do it yourself you could go through with the repaint right before your package expires. This avoids you getting more chips between now and when it does expire.

Get some touch up paint and a syringe or toothpick. Should be sufficient unless you're a perfectionist. I have a litany of chips up front with all of less than 11k miles, but it's a lease so they can be the dealership's problem.

as a guy from dealership told me if an engine fails due to rust of improper painting they will not fix it by the warranty, but maybe he is not right

So he thinks rust on the trunk lid can cause engine failure? Glad I learned that today.

Should that happen to me, I'll cover all the rust spots with duct tape so they can't see it and figure it out.

What is wrong with the brains of Hyundai Genesis dealers? Do you think they are still stuck in D credit rating, shitbox mindset from years ago? That is my feeling on it. They (the dealers) seem unable to let go of the business model that made them successful over the past 10-15 years, having a hard time moving into Genesis' desired future. That is a lot to get out of a goofy dealer lying to a customer about rust and repaints, but it's my general feeling after having dealt with a moderate multitude of luxury dealers and now Genesis.

Minor rock chips are easy to fix. Purchase pint or qt of matching paint from paint supply store (may be $60 - 100, depending on paint type). Those paint bottles/kits available are ridiculously priced. Clean chip area with mineral spirits, alcohol final cleaning, dental pick to carefully clean chip area, dry with heat gun, fill chip hole with paint, allow to dry and repeat untill dried paint is flush with surface. When dry/ cured then polish with compound if needed. Use razor blade to shave high areas if too high. Repaired Chip area nearly invisible if done carefully.

Done this many times.

Very easy, no need for full repaint unless large area is pitted such as bumper.
