parking assist system malfunction

My 2015 Genesis sedan, 3.8, has recently developed an annoying habit. When waiting in line at a red light, it occasionally starts to beep indicating that I am too close to the car in front of me which is definitely not the case. Every once in a while when I'm the first car at a red light, it starts to beep when crossing traffic goes by.

I took it to the Hyundai dealer who couldn't diagnose the problem (even though I provided a video of the occurrence). On the eighth day that they had the car, they concluded that the car had been in a collision based on a very very slight indentation in our license plate. Nothing else on the front of the car supports this idea. They tell me that the entire parking assist system needs to be replaced.

Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks.

Some other cars systems apparently emit a signal that fools the parking assist. I've had it happen when behind certain BMW models and some Ford models. Does not happen much so I really have not worried about it.

On the other hand, if the dealer is saying they will replace the whole system you may want to take them up on it (assuming it is free under warranty)

I have the same issue on occasion and I haven't been in a collision. If tapping the car parked in my driveway is considered a collision even though there's no paint damage or scratches or evidence of anything more than a tap is reason enough to knock out the system then that's not a very good design.

Someone could have tapped my car in a parking garage or lot as well without my knowledge as well.

I call BS if they took 8 days to invent that flimsy excuse.

Pamplona/beige - thanks for the reply. i'm meeting my insurance company adjuster tomorrow at the dealership to inspect the damage for my claim. I've made sure the genesis tech will also be there to show the adjuster the "impact zone". we'll see what the insurance person's reaction is. btw, my wife called Hyundai usa and spoke with a very sympathetic agent who was also shocked that it took so long to diagnose the problem. the Hyundai usa person was actually able to see our history in their system. we'll see if anything happens on that front.

I have noticed this behaviour in my Genesis. In my case, it mostly happens when I am behind a BMW. I concluded it should be an interference with their emitters' signal.

Kylo ren. - I checked the two videos I have and neither cars in front of me are bmws. One is an old Honda mini van and the other is a big suv.

My experiences are similar to Balfor's. I've only had my car for about a month but I was following a car in stop and go traffic (I don't recall the make). I would get the beep noise every time I pulled up behind that one specific car (probably 5 or 6 times) but not when I pulled up behind other cars. It does seem to be some kind of interference from specific cars.

The 2014 E350 I had before the '15 Genesis did the same thing occasionally, so I doubt it has anything to do with a "collision". In the E I would be stopped at a light and suddenly the front and even side warning lights on the dash would start flashing and beeping. In the Genesis, I've had it happen a couple of times when stopped behind a car. I think it is just a quirk due to how these systems operate.

And I wouldn't trust that dealer to ever touch my car again.

Same here - usually when I hear it and look at the car in front it's a BMW X3 or X5. Must be cross talk/interference - this is why I question how we can ever have self driving cars unless all are on a common standard to avoid this type of issue... Not that I ever want self driving cars - I like to drive myself!!

I too have had this happen a few times. I simply press the "P" button to turn off the system until I start moving again. Issue doesn't repeat itself often enough to warrant a trip to the dealer for me.

It's not broke. The cross-traffic thing is a feature. The beeping when near other cars is because of their emitters as well - and/or you are stopping to close. Remember - the car doesn't know the difference between a car sitting at a light or a high curb... it just knows that it is an obstruction. The car does a lot of things to keep you safe... to be honest - it might be a safer idea to adjust your driving habits accordingly with the car's behaviour. It's only trying to keep us safe.... like alerting us when we are changing lanes without using turn signals, pulling up to close to ther vehicles (should always leave yourself enough room for an escape route anyhow).

I have this happen as well sometimes. I also noticed that sometimes when pulling into my garage, my front sensor will go off quickly (1 beep) when first entering the garage even though nothing is in front of me.

Is there an altitude or angle change when entering the garage? ie - is the driveway higher than the garage or vice versa? Is your driveway angled downward as it goes into the garage? Such as:

Mine has malfunctioned as well. I took video of it.

It alerts of if I'm really close to something but their is nothing there

You need to turn off the Parking assist. There's nothing wrong with the sensor.. When off they would only beep when you put the car on reverse. The owner manual is your friend.

My 2011 started doing this. It did it so often I shut the parking sensor system off. I brought it to the dealer yesterday and they said they couldn't duplicate the issue and that there were "no codes" to indicate a problem.

I asked them to replace the sensors, but as their are 2 of them facing front and one each facing to the side they don't know if any or both of the fronts are the problem.

Today (the day after I got back from the dealer) the system decides to go full batshit crazy. It beeps at animals in the woods, speed bumps, ghosts, low flying planes and yes, other autos. I record 4 videos of the batshit show including pulling into their parking lot. The service writer tries dismiss the videos and to justify their "no problem found". I request they take a look at it. I pull it into their garage with the window down so they can hear the system screaming.

This time they diagnose the passenger side front sensor as having gone bad. It will take a week for a replacement to arrive.

I believe if this were another brand they would have tried to diagnose the problem by swapping out one sensor at a time. But the dealer said Hyundai won't pay them for that. This is why Genesis needs to be a separate brand.

I have a 2021 Genesis GV80 and sometimes when I am at a light or stop sign and there is a car in front of me the sensors that indicate you are to close start beeping and showing the yellow warning symbol. I am not to close and this happens randomly. I have taken pictures an some short videos but the service department says they can not duplicate the problem and they have to see it happen before they can fix it. DAVE the service writer at Fred Beans Genesis in Doylestown, Pa. told me, and I quote " they do not have the time or manpower to fix my problem " Does anyone know what I should do about this? So I paid close to $75,000 for this car and even purchased an extended warranty and I am being told that they don't have the time or manpower to fix my problem. Is that ludicrous or what. Please someone let me know what to do. I even called Genesis about this and the rep, Elisha call and spoke to the service manager to confirm my service appointment and a rental car for me. Again Dave the service writer told me that he talked to the service manager Raphael and Raphael told him that he never spoke with anyone from Genesis. Later on It did come out that Raphael did indeed talk to Elisha. And my car is still not fixed since approximately Sept of 2021 and now it is July of 2022. WHAT DO I DO?
