Pitted windshield/warranty?

I have a 2011 hyundai genesis. I bought it with 18,000kms. It is a non accident senior driven one owner vehicle. When I bought it from a non hyundai dealer I did not notice the pitted windshield as it was cloudy. Now when the sun hits it I can see the pits everywhere. I am wondering if this is a defect as its a oem windshield and if a dealer would replace it?

Pits in the windshield are caused by road debris (often sand/rock put on streets in winter), and is not a manufacturing defect.

I agree that is possible but I have owned 7 cars with over 200,000kms and never had pits even close to this. I have contacted hyundai canada regarding the issue to see what they say regarding this issue.

Has anyone else had windshield pitting issues?

At one time I lived in a city that did not use salt in winter, but used sand instead. Windshields were always pitted when I lived there. Cars don't rust, but the windshields need replacing every so often. Unfortunately, the Genesis windshield has special sound absorbing glass and is pretty expensive.

The fact is the car was bought with only 18,000kms and for such expensive glass it doesn't hold up well. Again ive owned hondas and acuras for years and never had this issue in the same city with the same salt etc. I really think their could be a defect.

So you know exactly where, when and what roads the previous owner or owners drove the car. Wow. I wish I could get that much info on a used car.

Maybe the PO liked to draft off sand trucks! Seriously though- I drove my new '98 VW Beetle 35 miles each way to work without issue for 11 years. I purchased a new car and gave the beetle to my son for college in Kansas. Inside a year, because of rocks from passing trucks, etc., the windshield was replaced twice.

I do not know about where you are from, but I have had windshields replaced through insurance for pitting and it does not affect our premiums.

My insurance has an additional premium charge when the deductible for windshield damage is different than regular dedectable.

Interesting. I will look into the windshield insurance deal. Hyundai canada still has not emailed me back as of yet.

Basically, look for full glass coverage. I have this, and there is a $0 deductible, so if I need ANY window(s) replaced there is not cost to me. I don't remember the amount extra this is on my policy, but I believe it was under $10/month.

Bought my car brand new. Had the windshield replaced at 10k kms because of pitting. second windshield has 30k kms on it and has stood up very well.
I paid for extra glad coverage so it was all done for free.

Got a '12 R Spec I've owned since day one. I too have pitting on my windshield that is becoming excessive. I do not drive behind trucks with debris falling out. They do not sand or salt roads in SoCal. My '04 Chevy truck that I've owned since day one does not have this issue. I think the glass is just too soft. I haven't checked into replacing it yet but will in the future.

From what I have been told by a windshield replacement company when I had one replaced years ago due to pitting, if it hampers you driving view, the insurance will cover it at no fault to you and no increase in premium. That was on a '63 Chevy truck and after 45 years, it needed replacing due to pits.
