Plasti Dip?

I stopped by a local body shop to see how much the would charge to put on a clear bra on my genesis and he is trying to sell me a plasti dip bra for my car. Here is a link to the stuff

he said he would use the clear and I wouldn't be able to tell it was there. But have not seen a car with this done. The body shop said that he has done several oil field trucks and it holds up great.

The question has anyone had this stuff as a bra or seen it on a vehicle?

$125 for this stuff or $800 for the clear film bra, I'm afraid that I would get what I pay for.

There are several problems.

A. Plastidip is textured. It will hold dirt and you'll be able to see the "bra" more easily.

B. Plasti-dip is not unknown to damage the clearcoat or paint underneath when pulled off. Keep in mind that the stuff was originally invented to be used to coat bare metal tools to give them grips.

C. Plasti-dip does not have the same longevity as a vinyl bra. The stuff doesn't hold up well after years of use.

I wouldnt pay what he is asking for it. I have used the black and the clear plasti dip. It will NOT harm paint. When sprayed on thick, it easily peels off once you get an edge on it. Similar to putting elmers glue on your hand and peeling it off as a kid. It can easily be sprayed over to touch it up and washes just fine. Honestly for a clear bra you can do it yourself, really nothing to it. Ive used it during a road trip on the front end and side skirts of my previous vehicle and on days at the track on the bumpers so rubber didnt stick during burnouts and just peeled it off at the end of the day. Also had my wheels sprayed for a couple years. Its easier just getting a clear 3m vinyl put on. Just put it on yourself and save some money. I suggest go to lowes and buy a can and spray it on something so you can see how it actually works and peels off. Ive found many uses for it around the house as well

I second plasti dip and have never had a problem and it will not ruin your paint. Get a can and practice you can eventually do what ever you want. I have used it for years it is awesome stuff.

Agreed. Factory clear coat is able to handle plasti dip with no issues.

I am contemplating doing it to my RSpec wheels just for a different look.

Well ive never seen any car have issues and im sure there are tens of thousands of people using it on cars without issue. This is the 1st time ive ever seen a car have an issue. Maybe its something to do with subarus and their paint specifically. You cant call a product bad just because it work bad on one specific car. Maybe there were othere issues with the paint or something like a wax etc that was already on or cause it to bond with the paint. Plasti dip is a total different chemical make up than paint. Also doing an entire car it has to be mixed with xylene or something similar. Also the other issue ive seen with removal was people doing an entire car and then using a pressure washer to get it off. It must be put on in about 5 or so coats in order to peel off with ease. I googled and only found like 5 threads on cars with messed up paint after removing. With that said, chances are it will work just fine on a given car.

Dipped car, gloss black vinyl roof. Never a problem except people dinging your doors. There are no anti-scratch solutions for dipped cars.
