Portable Hard Drive

Has anyone tried using a portable hard drive (Western Digital) with the USB port? I'm suspecting the port doesn't have enough power to do this.

I have not tried this myself but I heard someone was able to plug in a 120GB portable drive sucessfully.

This will only work if your portable drive doesn'T require auxiliary power to function. Laptop hard drives (2.5") ca usually work with the power provided by a USB port but it really depends on the type of enclosure they're in.

USB ports only supply limited power but there are 1.8" drives that stay well within those limits. However the software in the multimedia system is not very stable so be prepared for somewhat of a rocky experience.

When it plays it sounds great but expect initialization issues and hangs. These bugs are not limited to a large drive but will also happen on a memory key.

I went on a cruise with a 16GB Micro Cruzer with 320kbps MP3's. Sounds great. Slight annoyance that the system doesn't keep the random setting once the car is shut off. Maybe there's a way to retain the setting. Haven't had much time to read the book yet.

If your USB drive does NOT require an external power supply it will run off the usb port. I tested a 100 GB portable drive from Maxtor. But I am trying to figure out when I would use this. The bandwidth is limited. Even the ipod doesn't provide "true" sound. I have ripped to DVD most of what I like from the IPOD and play from the CD/DVD drive.
