If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello, I've been looking at a 2012 Gensis 5.0 r-spec, and I just have a few questions. What oil does the car use? Can't find a page which tells me and I haven't looked in the owners manual when viewing the car. Any common problems? I know the trans is abit slow on shifts, but is it smooth? I'm young, so I believe the r-spec suspension will be better for me. How do you all like your current cars(3.8 or 5.0)?

Thanks guys!

(note: none of the comments below answers your question, which I think is 5W-20 and I am sure will be corrected if wrong. But you may find it useful anyway)

2009 4.6 manual recommends API SJ, SL / ILSAC GF-3 or above and shows 10W-30 standard for zero and above temperatures, 5W-20/30 for below zero in the chart on page 8-5. It then states this:

1.For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use the engine oil of a viscosity grade SAE 5W- 20, 5W-30 (API SJ, SL / ILSAC GF-3 or above). However, if the engine oil is not available in your country, select the proper engine oil using the engine oil viscosity chart.

Some 2012 5.0s have oil burning issues (~1 qt every 1000-2000 miles), which I believe was caused by a) Hyundai using lower tension piston rings and b) lighter weight oils in the 5.0 engines to try and save on fuel economy. Many have been fixed by going to higher weight oil (from 5W-30 to 10W-30, pennzoil brand seemed to be a good one). A few have had engines replaced.

Big thread on the subject here: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=10687

Thank you for the oil information. I noticed that it's not a problem for all, but it's still a problem. Has Hyundai noticed it and done something about it?

I'm coming from a Subaru Legacy because it has an oil problem, and do not want another one. It's really a headache that I do not want again.

Next, how do you all like your Genesis'? I'd love to hear your opinions and reviews of your cars. So far from what I've read on this forum, the car doesn't have major problems, besides that annoying oil consumption.

Thanks guys.

Hyundai has replaced a few 2012 5.0 engines using excess oil if people really complained hard enough to HMA. But most of the time they say it is normal and will not do anything. Unless you can test drive the car for a few thousand miles before purchase to check oil consumption, I would look for a 2013 model, even if it means waiting until you can afford one.

There is no oil problem with the 3.8 engine.

Totally looked into a 3.8, because it comes with the pro of having a better fuel consumption rate. But the problem is, around my area on the Jersey Shore, I am having a difficult time finding a 3.8 that isn't a boring base model. I am really, really, /really/ into music which is one of the reasons the Genesis excites me. The 5.0 just seems like its a 'more bang for the buck'. I love speed(not the drug) and superb sound systems. In the two previous cars I've owned I've spent so much in speakers, head units, amps, sub-woofers, it's just not worth it anymore because although the cars sound wonderful, they don't perform. My current car: 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.5i limited is awesome. I totally love the AWD, I do have the premium sound system offered by Subaru, and it's nice, but I'm sure the Lexicon is amazing. Sadly, my Legacy has encountered a leaking head gasket, and instead of fixing it, I am going to get something that will curve my speed(The 2.5 boxer engine isn't that peppy, shoulda got the Turbo :[) and sound appetite. I've been looking at Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3-Series, and then I remembered this car. Badges don't mean much to me, but I wanted performance, which made me think German. Then I saw Genesis prices and thought, "Well this car must have loads of problems. A beautiful car like this with a price tag of around 30k, what...?" But the car really isn't a barrel of bad luck. When compared to German, the savings are enormous, but all of you clearly know that! I probably won't be able to purchase until tax returns come in, but I am looking now. Hopefully the Legacy doesn't blow...

Thank you for your input and information on the 3.8 and 2013 5.0l model.

The Rspec will slap youl with stupid accereration and reward you with a lux ride...jus sayin.

Close to a r-spec would be a 2012 4.6 V8 with tech pkg. Lexicon 17 speaker system. MPG is only 1 or 2 mpg less then v6.

When the car was sold in 2012, did they have the same two options as the 3.8: Tech and Premium? Or did the 4.6 come with Premium making the Tech the only available option?

Thanks!

Don't be miss led.
The Rspec is a loaded ride with serious break-neck speed.
Turn off the ESC and drift.
Just know you're personal limits and dont hurt anyone and keep the rocketship out of the ditch and the ride will reward in spades.

Haha, I like to have fun, but not too much. Sadly, the only time I can get my Legacy wheels to spin is either when the ground is covered in snow, or I have bald tires and it's raining! Can't do that anymore with my Cooper Z's. :c

I don't like to work the car too hard, or push its limits. I don't like to break my possessions!

After re reading.
The lex is a great STOCK system but it dont thump like a wigger on crank.
To replace it would be counter productive.
It's like hearing a concert vs a loud but poorly sound engendered bar band.

R-Spec (2012 was first year) has always come with the equivalent of the Tech Package as standard equipment.

4.6 (non R-Spec) introduced in 2009 had Premium Package as standard and Tech Package as optional. But after that 4.6 had Tech Package as standard equipment.

As Mark says above, the 2012 4.6 V8 models had the Tech trim as standard equipment. Personally I prefer the ride and look of the 2012 4.6 over the R-spec.

I have a 2012 R spec and love it-although my wife has pretty much taken it over for her daily driver (was supposed to be my retirement ride). Yeah right. My buddy has a 2013 SRT8 Challenger and he could barely tell the difference in power-this car is definitely a sleeper. I don't like the DIS but overall the car is great and we always get positive comments when we park the car.

dis?

^I think it's a big stretch to say that the stock Nav/radios don't work. Obviously some folks choose to add aftermarket equipment and that is their option.

My system had an intermittant "blue screen of death" problem from day one. I drove over to the dealer and they replaced the head unit. Thank you Hyundai warranty. I have a touchscreen vs DIS, which I prefer.

The DIS is the system that comes with Tech Package. The Premium Package has a different GPS without the DIS extras (and base has no GPS).
