  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone, I'm Jimbo, and I joined these forums to get info on the Genesis, specifically the 3.8 coupe. Ive been lucky twice now to have secured Genesis Sedans as rentals--one a Lambda and the other a Tau--and have been more than impressed with these cars: performance, comfort, BQ, etc. H has really stepped up to the plate and delivered some fine autos.

First, let me tell you where I am coming from. I have owned MINI Cooper S's, a 2005 and a 2009 JCW, since 2004. In a nutshell, these cars, while a blast to drive, are typically problematic and can be a pain to own. The first one had a solid engine, but everything around the engine was crap; the 09, the engine is crap, but everything surrounding the engine seems solid. anyway, the 07-09 engines are starting to develop serious carbon buildup and timing gear problems (does BMW even test these engine?); I am on my 3rd timing chain tensioner in only 14K. And we wont even talk about the high pressure fuel pump issues...

well, last week on vacation I secured a fairly high mileage Tau as a rental, and absolutely loved it: 26,000 miles and it was still rock-solid and quiet-- to the point that since I had not driven a coupe I went by a local H dealer and took out a 2010 3.8 Track auto on an extended test drive, including some mountain twisties. My impression: I thought the MINIs were a blast to drive, but the torque steer in the newer (07-current) models, like my 09, is pretty bad.

Man it's been a long time since Ive had a RWD coupe put such a huge smile on my face, esp. in the twisties, I found it more fun to drive than the MINI, especially when I stomped down on the gas and didnt have to clutch the wheel like my life depended on it!! Holy Cow! Drifting again! (mustve wore off 5mm of tire tread on the drive). Didnt care much for all the brushed aluminum on the center stack, but I hear the 2011s are going to be tweaked in the interior. Also, I was impressed with the overall BQ, something that's suffered on the MINIs throughout their history.

So long story short, I went back to the dealer, and they tried to get me to buy it for just under $30k all-inclusive out the door. Did not--the color, some lime-ish green metallic, turned me off--and I need to figure out what to do with the MINI, but man what an experience; after getting back in the Tau it seemed so staid, in a Lexus sort of way.

anyway I'd like to hear more stories from 3.8 coupe owners, including how much you like your cars, dealership experiences (I will say this about MINI: the dealer experience has been stellar) and maybe a rumor I'd heard about H dropping the Tau in the coupe at some later date.

Thanks everyone! :D Jimbo
