  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello,
I own a 2013 Genesis 5.0 Rspec sedan. I bought it almost a year ago.
I have an issue with the transmission. It is not broken, but it shift weirdly and revs engine for no reason sometimes.
For example. If I go 20mph and floor it. It will down shift, go to 40mph, revs to 7000rpm. Then does not shift. Stay at 40mph and the revs go down to 5000. Then it shift up.
This is extremely annoying as this takes around 2 seconds.

Another example: I am going 40mph. I try to overtake someone. Throttle 3/4 down. The engine will rev to 6500 rpm. But then just stay there. I have to put the foot all the way down to make it shift.

Tiptronic just does not work. I can only go one gear at a time and it takes 2 seconds per shift.

Is all this normal?
I bought a sprintbooster to see if that helps. The car feels a little more responsive. But the transmission just doesnt listen to my input.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do a transmission fluid and filter change. Dealer can re-flash the transmission software

Any check engine lights on?

Hi

I have a 3.8L 2012. Same type of issue started happening but over time, the gears would not catch in sync and it would bang into gear. This was with about 170k on it. 220k later and its starting to do it again with the new tranny.

Ill be making a separate post on this because I am about to lose my mind over this.

But tell me this, how often do you engage the auto hold and ebrake?

does it do what you are saying when you are driving perfectly straight? Mine will do this on occasion if I am making a quick turn/basically a uturn and give too much gas during mid turn. The car will cut power
Now you can see what happens without the electronic nannies by holding down the ESC button and then try a uturn when flooring it...trust me - you better be in a WIDE open area because you will blast the rear tires immediately
All of this to say is I imagine your transmission is fine. Just make sure to get the fluid drain/fill at the dealer or somewhere that will guarantee to use Hyundai fluid. Should cost about $200-$250 - drain/fill NOT a flush

update: I went to Hyundai dealership and asked the tech if I could drive the car to show him the issue. He told me he "reset" the transmission via an OBD2 app. I was not able to show him the issue. I drove for 15min and the car shifted right for the first time.
They charged me for 1 hour repair. I was told, I can bring it back if I can replicate it with no charge.
This lasted around 1 month. Car drove great.
This week the issue came back.
Any ideas?

I have a 2013 3.8 with similar issues. The dealer updated the software (which is a "learning" program). After a couple of days it shifted great but it seems to go through the learning process quite often. To me, it seems more like a computer issue but my dealer doesn't seem too interested in trying to figure it out. I'd love any ideas on how to fix this.

The solenoids/valves are going bad. Software reset is a temporary fix but it will come back. The only solution that has proven effective is to replace the solenoids/valves. There are threads with lots of details/pics/part#s in this forum.

The old manual-reset was to use "M" manumatic mode and shift manually from 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 with at least 5 seconds in each gear. No idea if this works on the newer cars... but you can give it a shot.

Thank you, I'll look into it!

I saw a feed on this site about 8speed trans having similar problems, the only solution was a new/updated tranny that they said does not have the problem thereafter.

Update: engine blew up on Saturday. Not even 60k miles. I wasn’t able to convince Hyundai that there was a transmission issue. Now I am fighting to get a new engine under warranty. Then try again to get the transmission replaced. Sorry to say. But I bought this car because I thaught it was very reliable. My old M3 had less problems. Maybe I just bought a lemon.

Did you buy a certified used car from a Hyundai dealer or get an extended warranty?

Hyundai agreed to pay 90% of the cost. Check out the parts they put in it. I asked them if they could give me $25k instead and I would have bought a new Genesis. But they refused. And the transmission is still not fixed. The repair took Gettel Hyundai over 3 weeks. And to make it worse. After 1 week they finally gave me a car to use. Then they charged me $30 a day when I got the Genesis back. Stay away from Gettel Hyundai in Sarasota. Terrible service.

Glad to see you got your car fixed. But yeah for $27k they totally raped the warranty company. Could have bought two or even three used cars for that.

Gettel service used to be pretty good and always took care of me. Then a little over a year ago they replaced the service manager and the entire service writer staff with upselling money grubbers playing the short game. My '12 will be my last Hyundai because of this.

A shame, really.
