  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi, new member here. Considering a purchase of 2012 Genesis sedan 4.6L with 71K one-owner miles. I've heard this V8 doesn't offer a ton over 3.8L, but prices are similar, in this area. I've owned '00 and '07 Accents, and as a self-maintainer was very impressed with Hyundai design simplicity and parts system - online tools, parts quality and prices. At least, hard parts. Thus assured, with friends' recommendations, positive reviews from CR and Edmunds...I went looking for a large, safe comfortable sedan, to keep for several years. And maintain it myself, at least partially.

I am not accustomed to modern creature comforts, like nav, cameras, etc. Of course, I would want the things to work, but they won't have much priority for me.

Reviews I've read are mostly positive - things that stuck out:

1. Throttle response, especially in safety situations, rolling stop, etc. If these can best be sharpened by add-on boxes or ECM upgrades, I could even live with that. I've dealt with significant turbo lag from annoying to potentially unsafe, and after years I just learned to cope with it.

2. Various instrumentation problems - again, only safety-related issues are of major concern for me.

3. On average, how many of the gizmo troubles you get are addressed with software updates / flashing, etc rather than parts being replaced?

BTW, I am not opposed to just going to the dealer like most folks. Even as self-maintainer I usually stay close to them anyway, their parts counter, at least.

Any comments you have on 1-2-3, are appreciated.

I'll be test driving the actual candidate tonight. The only thing the owner mentioned so far, was intermittently flickering display from backup camera, usually when wet.

Thanks!
Nick.

New owner here, maybe I can give you some "initial impressions" on the genesis, albeit V6.

1. Throttle and transmission are very responsive. Some forum members complain about the excessive responsiveness of tranny downshifts, although coming from vehicles that lack this, I really like it! Quick shifts into passing gear or going up a ramp has been much appreciated. Manual shifting is slower than desired. Rolling stop, had a test from ~30mph - 0 and the catch of the brakes (even the single piston V6 brakes) very much outperformed my previous vehicles. The ABS engaged in a snap and halted the vehicle much faster than I am used to.

2. None to speak of on my low-mileage '09. Except rear seat LED dome light, ~$200 dealer repair if/when those bulbs go. And sometimes the front parking sensor sees a ghost or something, and chirps for a second with nothing in front of the vehicle.

3. No idea yet - hopefully someone else can comment on this.

If you're getting a good price, and carfax report is clean, and the car is in good condition go with the 4.6 it's 50-something more HP and substantially more torque than the 3.8 without burning that much more gas. And, with the 4.6, it comes standard with all the options and packages offered on the 2012 Genesis, which are well worth having, from the great Lexicon stereo system to having Lane Departure Warning System, Adaptive Cruise Control, the back up camera, etc. If there is little different in price from a 2012 3.8 Genesis or the 4.6 Genesis, go with the 4.6 Genesis.

I am about 6 weeks into owning mine, and no problems, not even the reported oil consumption issue that has been an issue with some of the earlier built Genesis 5.0

Thank you for the replies and info. Carfax looks OK...arrived in CA 7-2011, was a dealer/demo car until 6-2012, sold to this owner with 7611 miles. Meh, not perfect...cars the dealer employees drive around, those could be harder-than-usual miles. The owner did mention this, albeit vaguely ("they had it for a couple thousand miles I think") but nevertheless I will give it a thorough inspection.

Thanks again folks.

Just remember that you would be buying a car with NO warranty whatsoever. The 5/60,000 warranty has ended and you are not eligible for the 10/100,000 mi powertrain warranty as a second owner. Check into the cost of an extended warrant from the dealer.

Assuming that the car (2012 4.6) has the 8-speed Hyundai transmission, 2012 was the first year for that transmission and some members reported that the early ones had some problems that required a transmission swap.

The only problems i have with my 2012 3.8 . Is the issues some times with the back up camera, flicker in and out. Also the bluetooth will not connect to my new phone and hyundai doesn,t have a upgrade for the bluetooth. No oil burn issues or tranny problem, as i just had it in service for the 96,000km service.

Never any oil burning issues reported with the 3.8, only the 5.0.

Only the early 2012's had transmission issues, but may not have affected everyone.

The V-8 seems to have limitless instant power. The gas pedal has a long travel like an old Mercedes. Press it and it scoots. All the switches and accessories have been flawless. My backup camera occasionally flickers or shows a blank screen. But restarting reboots the system and symptoms go away. I've read stories about the Lexicon systems being problematic. But looking on eBay shows lots of used replacements for affordable prices. I own tools, have a garage and do basic work. But other than changing oil and air filters there's not a lot to do.

I've had to unplug/replug my USB drive or reboot the sound system at times but nothing major. Right now I'm having the fog lights flash on the back off but I changed my lights a few months ago so it could just be something with that.

As far as the power, I got the V6 and in manual there's 0 lag. Just keep it in the right gear and you got power for days.

If you use automatic, it does tend to ignore quick pedal presses, so you may feel a delay when flooring it as it goes from 8th gear to 4th or whatever, but it's nice and smooth for regular driving so I like it. That seems to be mainly because it jumps to really high gears all the time. It's in 6-7th gear when you do 50-60 kmph so it's normal to have a delay.

1. Throttle response, ...

Not an issue with the 4.6. The TCU detuning was initially done by Hyundai to solve torque > traction issues with the 5.0 R-Spec, which they patched after very-well documented complaints on this forum.

2. Various instrumentation problems - again, only safety-related issues are of major concern for me.

What instrumentation issues? Never heard of any such issues on this forum with the '12 4.6. Haven't had any with mine.

3. On average, how many of the gizmo troubles you get are addressed with software updates / flashing, etc rather than parts being replaced?

None. I haven't had any gizmo troubles. Hyundai has done a number of tech-service-bulletin type software updates with the Genesis over the years. Most were ECU & TCU related and generally considered to be improvements.

The '12 4.6 is a fantastic car. Just don't own one past 5/60 without a Hyundai Platinum Protection Plan extended warranty (or whatever they call it now). I won't.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I got it yesterday - still lots to learn. Still sorting out transfer of original warranty. Apparently, newer warranty offerings (eg US Warranty) seem to drop to 5/60 for the 2nd owner, whereas earlier offerings may not do that. Lady at HPP said this VIN was sold with earlier warranty (Fidelity, she said? Maybe that's add-on) that doesn't have such rule and as such will transfer. Very confusing... perhaps by design.
Also, checking into extended coverage from HPP, as this car has 71K will require inspection at dealer. Fortunately I think I can do that where it was purchased originally, just down the street from my house.

Anyhow, I am enjoying the heck out of this car.

I've learned a lot so far, thanks to all the info here. Couple things I haven't been able to figure out. I'll probably find it in some posts here, I've only just started.

- Disable the side mirror automatic light-up when approaching the car. Seems there's proximity and light-sensitive trigger. I suppose maybe only with key fob present, need to check that. Not a big deal, just curious.
- Disable the chime at enter / exit. I think it's when fob is inserted/removed from dash, or start button depending on what happens first. Again not a big deal.

Thanks again!

Great choice. You're going to continue to love it and you'll find excuses to go somewhere just so you can drive it more.

If you happen to take some pictures please post them too, we have a discussion in the forum set up for posting pictures.
