  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I posted this in the lighting section for LED turn signals, but figured I'd post here for more visability.

It's a good thing I decided to do this mod because I found some paint issues. The paint on the body under the edge of the taillight assemblies seems soft and was scraped down to bare steel by rough edges on the lights or during assembly. I lightly sanded and applied epoxy primer (in the pics), then touch up paint, then clear. I also sanded down the rough plastic on the tails to hopefully prevent this from happening again. I'll keep an eye on it for sure. If I hadn't pulled the taillights, I wouldn't have seen this until it started rusting and running streaks. Luckily I dont drive this car in the rain or snow or salt.

I recommend everyone pull the tails and at least inspect.

Hard to see, do the pictures show the wear? If so at the small hole/bolt hole looking area?

Yes, the pics show it. It's the white areas on the edge of the lip where the bottoms of the light assemblies sit. Its white because I took the photos after I applied the primer.

Ah I see. That's a much worse area to have problems.... Thanks for sharing this, i'll be checking my car asap.

Yeah, the paint was just peeling off. Almost looks like the paint wasnt cured before they installed the taillights. Well, hopefully I caught it. It was clean metal, no rust yet.

Excellent catch, Cgo. I live in the snow and salt, so I'll be checking for this after taking delivery of mine. Can I ask a couple of questions?

1. Do you know the build date of your G70?
2. Are you using a generic touch up paint or did you get touch up paint from the dealer (or a 3rd party)?
3. Is the clear coat (last layer applied) necessary or just a "good idea" in your opinion?

Thanks again.

I dont know the build date, but I'll check tomorrow. I have a ton of paint products from previous car projects, so I used what I had that would work well. No need to match the color since it will never be seen. I used epoxy primer, a light grey base coat from PPG, and clear. Clear is durable and adds a layer of protection. What I did is overkill, but I already had the stuff.

Hope that helps.
