  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is it just me or whenever I think about, price difference between V6 prem/tech and R-spec is quite crazy?

Truecar.com or Circle shows MEAGER 3k difference!

V8 4.6 is 1k more than V6 3.8 prem/tech! add 2k more and you get R-spec.

What a weird pricing model. Anyone know similar pricing on other model/brand that does this?

Its you :)

R Spec is worth every penny. Drive one and you may agree.

The reason I went for the R-spec...from Car and Driver -

"What we were able to discern is that the moderately higher spring rates somewhat negate the other 2012 Genesis’s breakthroughs in the ride-and-handling arena, rediscovering some of the flintiness that other models thankfully left behind."

So if you want it all to be, in essence, about the engine then 5.0 all the way but if the ride is important...you might consider the 4.6.

In 2009 there was a bigger price difference between V6 and V8, because of extra features on the 4.6 V8 not available on V6 (plus difference in engine and transmission). That is also the strategy used by many other car makers also (inlcuding a lot of non-engine extra features on the V8 models). The differenece in the manufacturing cost of the V6 vs V8 engines alone is not that much, since bigger engines just have larger displacement (bigger holes in the engine block for the pistions), so there is not always an absolute relationship between engine size and cost.

Hyundai has now eleminated almost all (but not quite 100%) of the non-engine differences between V6 Tech package and V8, and the engines are not that much different in HP either with the GDI on the 2012 V6 compared to the non-GDI on the 4.6 (and transmissions are now the exactly the same, since they both use the new Hyundai 8-speed).

Hyundai has always been concerned about CAFE requirements for gas mileage on its entire line, and doesn't want people choosing the V8 just to get luxury items that were previously not available on the V6. In Korea, the Genesis sedan is available with a 3.3 L engine.

Regarding the R-Spec, it has GDI and the "clown" wheels, but not sure what else it has over the 4.6 that would cost more money to make (the stiffer springs, shocks, and stabilizer don't cost more than a few dollars extra, if any).

My clown wheels get a lot of complements that my 4.6 wheels never got. I think it takes something pretty special to make people go out of their way to give praise about someones's car IMO.

It's that weird pricing model that lead to me into the R-Spec. I originally wanted a V6 Prem+Tech then thought "wow, it's such a small price bump to get the 4.6, I might as well." Then I went "Gee, now that I'm getting the 4.6, it's such a tiny jump to get the R-Spec, I might as well."

:D

I completely agree . . . my clown wheels are the most commented on feature of the car.

I just bought a 2012 4.6 and the one thing I wish I had were the wheels from the R-Spec. I think they really look good on the car. When I asked the dealer about it, they wanted $3500 to change the wheels and tires. That is almost the whole price difference between the 4.6 and the 5.0.

I still would like to have those wheels, but not for $3500.

Someone on this forum was selling their R-Spec wheels and tires recently. Not sure what the status is.
