  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all!

I purchased a 2015 Hyundai Genesis last Fall and am having an issue that I am not 100% sure how to explain. Keep in mind I know very little about cars so I apologize....

For the last week or so when I push the button to start it... it “stutters” as I like to call it. It kind of tries to start... fails and then retrys and starts. All with one push of the button.

Any thoughts? I took it to a local car guy and he tested the battery and it was all fine. I’m just worried I’m gonna get stuck somewhere and it completely won’t start.

Thanks guys!
Sadie

Could be a few things:

1. Bad battery connection between battery and starter
2. Bad starter
3. Bad fuel pump

I would start by taking it by a dealer and letting them look at it. Hopefully there is a code set in one of the affected systems that narrows it down.

I had the exact same thing happen. Had the dealer test the battery at my 30k mile service, it passed.

Did the click / click / click rapidly a few more times, only after sitting for 2-4 days, then wouldn't start. I used roadside and got a jump, they tested the battery and said it was still good. I went and bought a replacement AGM and put it in myself and haven't had an issue since.

Not saying that is your issue, but my battery "passed" testing twice and was clearly the issue.

I have read several posts on this forum regarding the negative ground cable in the trunk on 2015-2016 models that was loose either at the battery or at the ground point. this can cause the issue described as well, replacing the battery might not have been the fix so much as retightening everything fixed your issue.

It's also possible the battery was bad and the testing was done with a conventional tester not one designed for an AGM battery, These types of batteries have lower internal resistance than flooded batteries. Older capacitance battery testers/analyzers may not be able to accurately read these batteries. Most new battery analyzers have a special mode for AGM/gel cell batteries. Old-school load testers might not provide conclusive results.

My take is that it was the second case that occurred, Piece of mind was worth the ~$150 for the new battery as we had a 2,000+ mile road trip over spring break.

Be sure you're getting an AGM and not a lead acid wet cell. An OE-spec AGM 95R (105 amp-hours) is closer to $450. Even the Duralast AGM (~75 amp-hours) is still a hair over $200. A lead-acid for $150 is probably in the 65 amp-hour range.

While lead acid will work, the performance will be below (a lot lower) the energy mapping for the OE AGM spec battery. The Genesis uses an alternator shutdown system to save fuel whenever electrical load is manageable by the battery before it kicks back in and recharges it. With a starting-type lead acid wet battery, you're cycling the battery in a manner not beneficial to the cells and you're also dropping the car out of fuel conservation mode much faster.

Well, I got the Duracell platinum from Batteries+ and had a 20% off coupon and a couple mostly used visa gift cards laying around that made in ~150 out the door for me. I didn't have the luxury of waiting for shipping and it was the only AGM in stock nearby.
