  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I bought a 2011 V6 with Tech package on 9/14. Great support from staff until I got to Finance office (cash deal - no trade). Tried to sell me a "Platinum Plus backed by Hyundai" package for "$1,974 if bought now, but if you wait until title is registered in 2 or 3 days it goes up to $2,974". He had no details beyond a 1/3 page marketing brochure. I said I would do some research first.

The plan was backed by an insurance company that does not appear to have any formal relationship with Hyundai. Found much better deal on line from Dealer in Fla. Since Nav, Cruise, and lots of tech gadgets go out of warranty at 3 years, and extended plan might be a good investment - but not at that price with that company.

Anyone have any suggestions or clarifications? It has to be backed by Hyundai, and their national web site doesn't really explain how to do that.

So what is the deal you got and from which dealer?

No No No. Those F&I guys are the scum of the earth. Those aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper it is printed on. Even the one sold by that Florida Dealer. NOTE, these are NOT Hyundai Extended Warranties. (Note that "backed by Hyundai" does not mean Backed By Hyundai" - just words to get you to buy).

The F&I guy puts you under a lot of pressure to buy. Big profit for them. Just as Nancy Reagen used to say, "JUST SAY NO"

When I bought my car, the F&I guy just did not want to take NO for an answer. F&I guys make more money for a dealership than anyone else, including the managers.

My best friend just purchased a 2010 Toyota Prius and the dealership (F&I Guy) sold him everything under the sun. My buddy is a "Salesmans Dream". Now he is stuck with a huge loan and much of it is from all the other stuff he bought with the car. SALESMAN DREAM.

Did I mention that F&I guys are on the same level as Pond Skum?

When I bought my car in Feb '10 I had a discussion with the F&I person who pushed REALLY hard on the protection plan, including telling me that if I were to curb a wheel it would cost $650 to replace it, etc. etc. I told her I didn't want any undercoating, paint protection, extended warranty, or any of that junk. She finally relented and pushed the button to print out my final invoice, and guess what - after all of our back and forth, she slipped the extended warranty in. I don't know if she thought I wouldn't notice it, or what, but I told her to remove it because I was not going to sign anything until she did. After some more argument she finally relented and removed it. This was the only negative part of the entire buying experience, and what a PITA. A lot has changed about car buying in recent years, but the F&I people are like they have always been.

Does anyone think that buying the extended warranty directly from Hyundai is a good decision. My concern is the limited warranty on the DIS and Lexicon. Thoughts??

Trying to figure out what extended warranty is actually backed by Hyundai seems to be the hard part. This link might be real www.hyundai-warranty-online.com - I've talked to them and they claim that this process is the ONLY one that is backed by Hyundai Motor, that it is handled by an insurance group (Fidelity) for Hyundai and marketed through one other commercial step. There are apparently several dealers in the country advertising this same plan on line.

He says it can only be sold through dealers - and that many dealers go their own route and get local, non-Hyundai-backed, insurance companies to handle it "because they can charge whatever they want".

Hyundai could help us out a lot by adding something to their official site about what extended warranties they back - if any.

Why not phone Hyundai in California and ask if this is on the up and up?

As for me, I've never needed an extended warranty in all the cars I've ever owned. I've also heard so many horror stories about people who purchased extended warranties and got refused repairs or went out of business. Happens all the time. These companies have been taking the public for many many years. Go into Google and check out Extended Warranties, and read all the complaints. Better yet, go into ripoffreport.com then read it and weep.

The harder they push the warranty, the more I think it is a rip off.

The money I've saved would more than pay for any work that is needed on my present cars.

I tend to agree with the high risk assessment. If the car and technology had a little more maturity and history behind it, I probably wouldn't consider it, like I certainly wouldn't with a Lexus or Infiniti. But a lot of the high tech stuff is new and only has a 3 year warranty.

If Hyundai motor actually is officially backing one of these, I'm going to think about it some more.

I went to Hyundai USAs site, and this is the link they send you to for extended warranties:

So as long as you are buying the Hyundai Protection Plan HPP - you are covered. If you want the nav/audio/DIS covered - it appears as though you will have to purchase the Platinum plan.

I have roughly 1000 miles left to make my decision. The service manager said that he has replaced a few amps already. He said that they were caused by a grounding problem. This angers me that another problem with the car could be causing major consequential damage - which the car owner will ultimately have to pay for if it is out of warranty.

I purchased an aftermarket warranty that covers bumper-to-bumper for my 4.6 tech, including the DIS head unit and all electronics. It does not include brakes, wipers, unless they are defective and not just worn out.
Like Bob I have always been skeptical of what the dealer is offering for an after-market warranty, and have never done it before. With our stereo/navigation unit being fairly bleeding edge w/fiber optics, and having had the displeasure of my head unit crapping out, I was concerned. I asked how much the unit was to replace and was told a repair would be about $3500 just for parts, plus the labor.
I did about two months of research and went with a company called Warranty Direct. The thing to be very cautious of is the extremely long laundry list of exclusions in the fine print of many of these companies, so many of them don't exactly cover what you think they are going to cover. I am one of those that read every word of fine print on every policy, and I'm satisfied I picked something good. Hopefully I'll never need to use it, but just one electronic problem with the car and this thing could pay for itself. I essentially bought some piece of mind.
Would I buy the one at the dealer? Heck no. It would cost more and cover less.

I'm also concerned by the DIS/Head Unit/Amplifier problems and was considering an after-market warranty. How much did the Warranty Direct cost?

I'm overseas right now (New Caledonia) and not sure, but I'll ask the wife and have her check. I know I bought the platinum-plus plan.

I just googled around on Warranty Direct... They insist on using aftermarket parts - no dealer parts. I was looking at p

I did notice on the sample contract on Warranty Direct's website that any component not covered fully covered for the regular warranty period (IE our audio equipment) by the manufacturer is excluded.

I certainly hope this is not the case, and there is an addition to the policy that covers audio specifically.

My dealer did say a new amplifier would cost around $3000. I asked him if one could buy a reconditioned model - and he said Yes - but didn't know what it would cost.

Do we know what the cause of all of these amplifer malfunctions is caused by? My dealer said it was a grounding issue - if this is true - I would like to check to make sure mine is properly grounded.

I did see part of that, but that is not the plan I bought - I think mine is called platinum plus, and it's 10/10 bumper to bumper, and basically picks up all my electronics after the three year end to coverage by the dealer. I specifically have it in writing that all of the head unti and the DIS are covered, as well as the fiber optics. It took quite a while to get picky and wade through the fine print, but I was satisfied I had a decent deal in the end. Also it was a better buy than many of the other plans because the Genny has a 10/10 powertrain warranty, so the things the aftermarket warranty covers is not as substantial as say a GM aftermarket warranty. Oh - and I can take it to wherever I want to to get it repaired...my choice, not theirs.
