  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everybody.I just bought my 12' Genesis sedan 3.8 with a technology package. I have been looking for a Genesis for the past couple months and I finally found the one I want. Where I'm located at is Southern California and the sedans out here are either the base or the 5.0l.
The one I bought is from Carmax and it is black on black with 87k miles. The only thing that's wrong with it is cosmetics. The front badge is missing some of the paint and like two spots on the grille are coming off. Ill post pictures later.

I was wondering if you guys can help out a new owner with some tips.
Thanks, StealthyKDM

Congrats and welcome!!

You can purchase a new "wing" badge at the site advertised on the right of your screen (Buy an OEM Genesis badge & help support the community). There are lots of directions on how to remove the old badge on this forum (and also some YouTube videos).

Thanks Mark. Ill definitely take a look at it. 👌. Does the 8 speed auto usually downshift hard on light braking and light acceleration?

2012 was the very first year for the Hyundai 8-speed transmission. Some Genesis owners had problems with it, but I don't recall the symptoms.

I would get a drain and fill for the transmission from your local Hyundai dealership. Should cost around $200. I have 94k miles and mine shifts great.
Do not get a flush. The transmission in these cars is not something you want to risk at a "jiffy lube" type place.

And congrats on the buy!

I agree with OUsig above. Although my experience is with ZF transmissions when they are dirty or low on fluid they can experience a rough downshift. My 2013 shifts smooth as a baby's bottom.

So on Tuesday I let my mom take the car to do an additional multipoint inspection at a Hyundai dealer and basically the advisor said I need to replace left and right lower control arms. But considering I'm under the 30 day warranty that carmax gave me, they should replace it right? Should I let them know that I'm having issues with my tranny or just do a drain and refill at a Hyundai dealer. I'm pretty sure they can do it but I want peace of mind that an authorized certified hyundai mechanic did the job. You guys are helpful👌☺

If the tranny is giving problems, let them know NOW. You want it on record before the 30 days is up.. I'm not a lawyer and don't know the terms of the warranty but you have a better chance of recovery if reported while under coverage.

Let's be frank. You bought a car with no warranty at all. The basic warranty has expired AND you are disqualified from the 10yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranty since it doesn't come with a CPO warranty.

Yes, CarMax might repair this specific problem, but I doubt it. My advice is to return the car to CarMax and hunt for a better long-term deal at a Hyundai dealer. Get some real longer-term warranty coverage

I could be wrong here but after casually looking at the Carmax Page but it looks like they make repairs for problems within the first 30 days but you only have three days to return the car. Guess I would suggest that you dont do anything on the car yourself and bring it in for anything that neeeds repaired. After 30 days you can do whatever you want on the car.

That's the thing. In my area there are no other cars that is comparable to my car. I've checked CarGurus and nothing in my immediate area
I will take note of all the tips.

Alright, so I just dropped off my genny off at carmax this morning. They are going to replace the front left and right lower control arms/ tension arms. That is the only thing that a Hyundai dealer found when I did an additional Multipoint inspection. The dealer also inspected the Engine Air Filter as well as the Cabin Air Filter, but marked it under "May Require Further Attention Soon" which I'm not too worried about. Other than that the Advisor at carmax did what he was supposed to do in the first place. Not to mention this is my second appointment and my second time calling off wor. The first time was last week, I had an appointment set on Tuesday. I took it in and he said that they had to inspect the car to verify my complaints. They had the vehicle for 6 hours. When they called me to pick up the vehicle, they said they had to order the part and that it will be there on that Thursday. When I got there, I asked if I could bring the vehicle in on Thursday, but they said the next available appointment was Monday, which is today. I wished they could have fixed the issue sooner because I have about 12 days left of my 30 Day warranty. Then he proceeds to tell me that he couldn't replicate the transmission issue. Maybe its my driving? Maybe its because I'm used to driving my mom's 2012 sonata? I don't know. Hopefully no other issues arise. Other than that, I will be getting new badges as well as some LED headlights.

I was wondering if you guys can help out a new owner with some tips.

Tip#1: Don't own one of these cars out of warranty.
Tip#2: See tip #1.

In your case, if Carmax will take it back, give it back. If they won't, look into a 3rd party extended warranty that will cover the transmission (and anything/everything else).

Don't scare him off too fast, he's only had it a month or so...

Keep up with the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, change your oil, and you'll be fine.

The OP is already complaining about the transmission, but he has no warranty protection whatsoever. We are trying to warn him, not give him a hard time. Most of us were 22 once.

I've had my car for a day now and all seems good now. They found that the front and rear control arm bushing were cracked and replaced, they did verify my complaints and did a transmission pan service? He said that the tranny filter is integrated to the pan. So they replaced the pan with a new one. They filled it with new fluid. The car shifts smooth but there was a few times that the transmission would shift hard. I think its my habits while driving. Basically I'm babying it, very light acceleration from a dead stop, basically let the car roll on its own power then pressing the pedal.

They gave me a 6 month/ 6,000 mile warranty on the new pan. If anything happens within that time, they will take the car in and they work with Aamco. I'd rather have it done by a dealer.
Overall I will keep up with maintenance, I know how to take care of cars 👌
