Hi all--

Has anyone had any trouble with the push-button starting system? When I engage the system (by pushing the button), I get a heavy "buzzing" sound, similar to what kids hear on TV cartoons when the character touches a live electrical wire. I wonder if that's acceptable, or what the standard is? My brother has a new BMW 535 w/push-button starting and it doesn't make any noise. Makes me wonder if it's a defective solenoid energizing, or something else. It doesn't have any problem starting....but I don't want to wait until I'm dead on the roadside somewhere--that woud be a problem!

Thanks for the (soon-coming) help!

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

Where is the buzzing coming from. Make sure it's not the sound system. The CAR should not buzz. However, I seem to recall reading if you start the car with a thumb drive in the USB port or an iPod connected you could get feedback through the sound system. Might try it with sound system off. Also, does it buzz everytime you press it, or just during the start function with your foot on the brake? If it's during start, try steping through the ACC, ON, OFF cycle with your foot OFF the brake and see if it buzzes.

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

Ric--

I've tried the various options you've described. I've tried it while the steering wheel was moving, after the wheel movement had stopped, with stereo on and off. I don't use an iPod, so that's not an issue. The buzz does occur every time I start the car. Foot on or off the brake isn't a factor--the outcome is the same regardless. The sound appears to be coming from the dash/guage cluster--behind the speedo, to the left of middle. It could be bouncing...actually coming from somewhere else. Sounds like this might be a warranty issue....I just hate for a dealer to open up the dash on such a new vehicle... I'll take any other thoughts you may have.

Thanks, by the way, for your reply!

Dan

Sorry we can't be more help other than assuring you it isn't supposed to buzz. The attached is probably more detail than you want, but will give you an idea of what the dealer will have to tear into if you take it in.

Dan, my car makes the same buzzing sound you describe when I hit the push button to start. It lasts about one second as I push the button in. It also makes the sound when I push the button to turn the car off. I'm not sure if it happens every time when turning off, but I know it buzzes every time I start it. I was hoping this was normal, but it doesn't sound like it is.

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

Mine does not buzz.

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

Hmmm mine doesn't buzz either.

Have you tried the start button after inserting the proximity key in the slot in the dash? (The only time I hear a buzz is if you walk away with the key while the engine is running)

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

Have you tried not inserting the keyless transmitter in the slot? You don't have to insert it in the slot to start the car. That slot is designed to allow you to start the car if the battery in your keyless transmitter dies, at least according to the manual.

FWIW, my car does not buzz, but the steering wheel does make a bit of noise when it moves when I start/turn off the car.

Re: Push-buttom Starting System

This morning, I paid close attention to any noise the Engine Start button makes. The button makes no noise but the steering wheel moves slightly back to my memory setting. This movement could be interpreted as a brief "buzzing" noise.

Other than that, my engine start button makes no noise.

Ric--

Thanks again for the info. I skimmed the detail, and it comes as no surprise that the dealer will have probably more testing/troubleshooting to do as opposed to actual mechanical corrections. I have an engineering background, so I don't mind the detail--in fact, I actually like it. (I don't work in that field any longer). I think the best solution for me is a visit to the dealer and let them review/repair as necessary. Thanks again for the thoughts and info.

Hi J--

Yes, I have tried that, as the key fob generally sits in my cup holder during starting. I really don't like things in my pockets--especially a set of keys, key fob, etc. Thanks, just the same, for your input.

Re: Push-Button Starting System

Hi All--

I've set an appointment with the dealer's service department for Wednesday morning (8/13). I asked the tech on the phone how long the problem would take to fix....he laughed! He had no idea. He guessed that the greater majority of time would be spent on the phone with Hyundai Tech Support trying to figure out the problem. It was their only Genesis at the dealership--and just like the (Genesis) name implies, it was their first sale of this series...I'm making history here, folks!!! Fortunately, I won't have to sit around and wait it out in a showroom. I'm getting a loaner, as a lot of my work requires me to be on the road.

I'll keep everyone posted regarding the outcome.

Like a kid in a candy store....

Hey Dan,

What was the verdict on the buzz in your push-button start? Did they figure it out?

Coug--

I dropped off the car on Wednesday morning 7:30am @ the dealership. I haven't heard from them since! (It's late Thursday evening here (east Tennessee)). I've been rather busy in my own work, so there hasn't been much time to see what's up, and they haven't called...they have my number obviously...I'll be going by there tomorrow morning (Friday) on the way into my office to see what progress has taken place. Once I get it back, I'll review whatever documentation that I get from them, and share it with everyone.

With no phone calls (from them to me) and no contact since the drop-off nearly two days ago, it makes me wonder....

Thanks for asking!

Things that make you go "hmmmm....."

Yeah, that's basically two days with no update. Two full days of work.. I wonder how long it would have taken for them to contact you had you not gone in today...

Coug--and others:

I visited w/the dealer on Friday morning. They've advised me they have been taking the car to their company-owned BMW dealership a few miles away to do diagnostic testing, as they have more advanced tools for such than the Hyundai dealership does. The result? They say there is nothing wrong with the starting system! All diagnostics show it's working fine, and until a TSB comes up, they can't/won't do anything. I understand that the diagnostics will show electrical shorts, or opens, or other condition that would create a service disruption, but it would seem to me, the casual observer (and the one making the payments) that after hearing the noise, that some further investigation would ensue...but apparently not. The service mgr. told me he's heard the noise, but has no idea as to the cause. Interestingly, the other problem I wanted them to address was a re-balancing of the tire/wheels, and in doing so, they found all four out of balance, and one tire on the back left has slipped belts. They've ordered another and it's due in mid-to-end of next week. (I have the Dunlop 18"...). BTW, the car had 275 miles (+/-) on it when I got it.

They told me that the only other Genesis they've sold since mine, it has come back in as well. The drive motor for the window (driver's side, I think) shorted out--caused the window to stop, and the trunk to continually pop open. Turns out the cause was from when the owner of that car had the windows tinted that the service provider got water down to the motor and caused the short. Apparently a long discussion ensued with the DM as to whether this was a warranty issue or not. They decided this one would be 'on the house' and fixed it. I'm sure that owner is happy.

The interesting part (one of many) was that the svc. mgr. called me AFTER I got back to my office a short while later to tell me about the tire, and the fact that there was (theoretically) nothing to fix at this time. His 'bait' to me to come back (as if I needed some) was to suggest that I would prefer driving my own Genesis instead of his Santa Fe loaner until the tire came in next week. While I would agree, I'm curious as to why he didn't come to that conclusion a few hours earlier!!

I'll state clearly that while I've lived in East Tennessee for a long time--nearly 27 years, I grew up near Chicago, IL. I learned early on to think quickly 'on my feet'. In this area, people don't do that well. Maybe we have an example of such.... :>)!

Dan, thanks for the update. I guess I'm not too surprised that they found nothing wrong on something like this.

Every time I get the buzz on startup I think, "Well I know there's at least one other Genesis owner out there with this." It's comforting somehow...;)
