  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So there are some reports of the '09 and (possibly other) model Genesis getting this error where they just won't start and/or do anything when the button is pushed. The dashboard, accessories, etc. won't turn on at all, nor will anything else happen.

I had this issue intermittently (maybe 3-4 times?) in 6 years of ownership, it always resolved itself. Until it didn't. This time, I did some reading, and concluded it was probably the power distribution module (PDM), part number 954603M200. So I got a new one, and plugged it in.

Strangely, it puts the car into ACC mode (equivalent to a single press of the start button with no foot on brake or any other interaction) without any intervention at all. It trips the ACC relay (I can hear the click) and the head unit comes on but I can neither a) start the car with the push button or b) turn the car off with the push button. I have to unplug the PDM to turn the head unit and other accessories off.

I have verified that the relays and fuses are all functional... any body have further experience with this issue?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Hmmmm, Neutral safety switch for the transmission? Starter relay/fuse not getting power? Bad ground somewhere? Have you tried holding the key right up to the push button start and see if it fires up? Unplug the car battery for a few minutes and plug it back in maybe to reset everything?

I actually got it started by manually switching the ACC, IGN1, and IGN2 relays in the front driver fuse box and then momentarily actuating the START relay in the front passenger...

Did check all the things you mentioned Qship... going to "jump start" it over to the dealer this saturday and see if maybe they just need to reprogram the ECU for the new Power Distribution Module, I'm at a loss otherwise.

Lothain,
It sounds like I have the same problem with my '09 4.6 Sedan as well. I just noticed the problem late yesterday afternoon and haven't had any further progress with troubleshooting. Appreciate you posting your results since you're further along than I am and you'll likely save me time & $$ on resolution. Thanks for posting.

I'll post my final resolution here, please let me know what you end up doing =D

Well until I found your post I was considering having it towed to a dealership, but that's always a crap shoot as many times they just throw parts at a problem until it's fixed, very costly that way. I'm currently working so fitting this stuff in, but the actual job of replacing the PDM very involved? Did it take you very long to do or require any special tools? Lastly, was it available at your local dealership or did you pick it up elsewhere?
Good luck with the rest of the resolution!! And thanks!

Unfortunately, above link seems to be for an aftermarket device, but maybe the step is still valid for the new PDM.

Lothain , extremely surprised to discover that my battery is down below 6Volts. Odd, never, never, never had issue with battery/charging system. Original battery (10yrs old) was just replaced this spring. Trying to charge it now with only thing I have, a trickle charger. I'll post results.

The battery was indeed the problem! After 10 minutes on jumper cables started right up. Only remaining issue is why battery dropped to 6volts in the first place.

Batteries that suddenly discharge... can be a bad battery - not uncommon. Another issue is the way the Genesis cars "shut off." When you turn the car off, much of the stereo and navigation stuff drops to a standby mode; if you don't restart the car for 10-20 minutes or so they fully power off. This standby mode lets them recover more quickly next time you start for those quick Starbucks/7-11 visits. If a sensor on the car though thinks something isn't fully close - hood, trunk, doors, etc. - the system stays in standby mode which will suck the battery down overnight. There is supposed to be a small rubber pad on the driver side of the hood, about half way along the side, that pushes a button on the fender to say "hood is closed." It was very common on the early cars for this rubber piece to a) fall off or otherwise be missing, or b) be too short to actually push the button. That lead to cars draining batteries too quickly. There is in fact a TSB on this along with a slightly taller button. Pop the hood on your car and check for this rubber button. It's been posted many times in this forum.

For early cars with the DIS based navigation system (Tech package), if you've got some time to kill: shut the car off in a garage or in the shade. Watch just below the CD/DVD slot - there is a small blue light there. Several minutes after shutoff you'll see that light blink. That's when the system decides to switch from standby to full OFF modes.
