  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I see the 3.8L requires 5.7L or 6qt of oil and the only containers i see is usually 4.73 to 5L of oil. I usually go with whats on sale so you are required to buy a another Litre or quart at a ridiculous price?

for example i see 5L jugs for $30 cdn and an extra 1L bottle is $15 cdn. seems kinda steep for a little extra bit of oil.

So buy two gallons and save the remaining for next time.......or buy corn oil. It should cheaper, no?

My Yukon xl takes 8 quarts so I buy two 5 quart size

IMO. that is the only way to go. Silly to buy a car for 50k+ and try to save 5 bucks on an oil change.

That’s the way I’m leaning. I still didn’t figure out whether I can bring up a screensaver. Thanks again for your help.

So buy two of the 5L jugs and don't fret over it. It won't go bad and you don't even have to put it in the refrigerator. Next time you only buy one, and the next time, etc.

ahh no way i figured once its opened it's good for a few months like some other fluids. good to know! I plan on using full synthetic and doing it close to once a year. thanks.

Anyone try the amazon basics oil? i hear its top quality if not one of the best out there. now to figure out a way to get it shipped into canada.

Haven't tried it, but it looks legit to me. Very similar in appearance and performance to Mobil1. 95% of the performance for 75% of the money.

Most companies that sell there brand of oil like Amazon, Walmart, etc. are just re-labeled bottles of an actual oil manufacture's oil. If you can find out who's oil they've re-branded it from then you can decide if you want to use it or not. I'm pretty sure Walmart's SuperTech oil is made by Quaker State if i remember right.

Blackstone report on Supertech in my ZL1. Held up just fine...

I buy two 5 quarts containers and four 1 quart containers since the 5.0 Genesis needs 8 quarts(actually 8.45 quarts per service manual) and Escalade need 6 quarts. I usually just put about 8.25 quarts in the Genesis and about 5.75 quarts in the Caddy, because I never ever really completely drain the pan and have some left over oil so I just under fill to endure that I do not add too much oil in the pan. The dip stick levels are usually spot on. I use Valvoline 5w-30 high mileage synthetic in both vehicles.

Thanks for the test with the Amazon brand oil. I was on the fence about buying the oil, but was not sure of the quality. Since I change my oil very frequently I may try the Amazon oil to save some money. I wished the guy in the video tested Valvoline synethic oil against the Amazon and Mobile 1 synthetic oil.

I run AmsOil 0w-30 Select in my 2013 3.8L and I just buy 6 single qts. since a 5L jug is a special order anyways, and with a filter it runs about $78 USD. It is worth the extra cost to me since I can go double the change interval and I have some leftover for the first 5K mile filter change and top off. Even though the oil is good for 15K miles I make sure to change the filter every 5K, as well as keep up with all other schedule maintenance in the book. I chose 0w-30 because the thinner cold viscosity helps eliminate that momentary valve cap click on startup (which was very unnerving to me when I first got the car)
