If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I love my black/black r-spec and it really runs great. The only issue i have is the tranny upshift/downshift slippage and lag. It takes about 2-3 seconds to upshift between gears. That is great for normal paced driving but a big headache for stoplite performance!
I have questioned hyundia engineers at the last sae in detriioit and got a glassy eyed stare and silence. They either realize the issue is an in-house design issue or don't have a clue.
I am a retired automotive engineer (bsmea) with 48 yrs of experience at most phases but have not gotten the answer to this issue. I am assuming there must be some computer logic issue that a new download could correct. Nobody knows the internal design of the new 8-speed in my circles. Is there a bright young computer genius out there that can help me?
I have to believe other genesis owners with the new tranny must be experiencing this same complaint. Please lets kick this around and respond if you can. Thanks jim

This was very frustrating to me also.

Every day to and from work, I go down the same hill and up the other side. I need to downshift 2 or 3 gears to maintain even speed on the downhill side, and the trans would not react immediately to driver input. I would be half way down the hill before the desired gear was reached.

I would think a simple re-mapping of the software would fix this, as I don't believe it is a mechanical limitation. Hell, my 13 year old Dakota R/T with a built 4 AOD will downshift much faster!

My thought is Hyundai's strategy is longevity over performance. It's their first in-house tranny so I'm sure they're being very conservative.

+1 ^

and in addition I think most cars are programmed for MPG's. Even my ZF downshifting is slow.........Guess I've gotton used to it, but I won't complain about my MPG's for such a powerful car.

There are some older threads out there regarding the same issue with the ZF 6 speeds also.

I would tend to agree, given their warranty. On the other side of the coin, I think it is pretty smooth and fluid going up through the gears under full throttle. :)

down hill gear changes = doesnt bother me

stoplight performance = fail with esc and fail with manualmatic.

hell you can be in 8th gear... and double tap (two gear drop) the manaulmatic and it just looks at you like uh... = fail

passing performance = takes way too long to drop a gear to pass. prob bound to down hill gear change too /shrug who knows.

Genesis may have a 5.0 = weight lifter...
but a transmission ... = grandpa.

Gensis does not deserve the R-spec badge.

ppp

p.s. would be nice for hyundai to update the TCU however i doubt they will.

I remember reading somewhere that the computer learns how you drive and will adjust shift points accordingly. Not sure if this is true or not, but I have noticed during the week when I drive like a grandpa the shifts are slower. When I get it out and run it a bit on the weekends it seems to react a bit and shift better. This could all be in my mind and completely placebo but it definitely feels like the more aggressive you are the quicker it shifts...

you can always choose your own gears, if you know there's a hill coming up, just shift down in advance, or half floor it and swap to manual when it drops a few gears.

What I did notice is that when you're in manual and floor it, it will shift to lowest gear regardless of gear you're in, so say auto wants to be in 8, you shift it down to 6, and then you floor it and get 3rd or 4th...that saves a bit time there.

Either way...gotta adjust to what you got or get something that works as you want.

Wow... words to live by !

'037' --- Thanks for the input regarding shift to manual 6th gear, then punch it for passing .... the 5.0 will downshift to 3 or 4th gear, and take off from there while in manual.

I have been trying to get used to the trans also .... In my previous car 2006 V8 LS Lincoln, in automatic mode it shifted very fast and it never stalled (I never really needed the manual shift mode).

In the 2013 5.0 rspec, I have tried to pull out in traffic and it simply stalls and delays accelerating for about 1-2 seconds. This is dangerous, and I am not used to a car waiting 1-2 seconds to take off when you floor it. I am used to pulling out, and getting moving ASAP so that No One has to ever worry about me impeding traffic when pulling out since I will be gone when taking off into traffic.

The rspec doesnt seem to do the 'stall-hesitation' when i simply punch it from a complete 0mph stop mode. My point is that i am still learning how the rspec performs, and it is not near as aggressive in its take off acceleration or passing
as my ole 2006 LS.

I assumed that if i turned ESC control off, it would perform faster, better .... but it doesnt seem to do that. I wish the cruise control would still work when ESC is turned off, but the cruise will not engage when ESC is turned off.

So, still learning how the rspec performs, or doesnt perform under different circumstances. ANY input from folks who have the 2013 rspec would be greatly appreciated. (regarding the hesitation-stall deal and also any info regarding the ESC mode. Thanks in advance.

drpearso consider how many gears it has to drop when you floor it. Say you're in 8th and you floor it, it's probably dropping down 4 gears maybe more. That takes time.

Also the 5r55n tranny in your LS was a 5-speed so not really comparing apples to apples.

When you are looking for passing grunt how far are you pressing the pedal down? In addition to a slow shift to preserve the transmission, the downshift logic is pretty conservative to boost mpg ratings.

When I have needed power, mashing through the kickdown switch has resulted in quick power every time.

Exactly!

I have the same complaint with my 2012 4.6L. It can get you in some scary situations when you need instant acceleration.

OK, lots of good information here on the transmission in the 5.0 Rspec. As posted earlier, putting the car in manual 6th gear, and punching it all the way through the kickdown switch helps. I just needed some time to get used to the Genesis and how it responds.

PS - A quick look estimate lets me see that it only upshifts about every 5mph. So at 34mph you are in 6th gear .... 7th at 35mph, and 8th at about 40mph .... that helps me know how many gears it will have to drop down through when flooored.

Again, good information from the posts here ... thanks to all, and everybody have a good day. Dan

The 8 speed has 5 upshifts & 3 overdrives, with 5th gear being direct. When you push to kick down push the shifter to manual it will show what gear your in.
