  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello eveyone I am newly regestered here on the forum but have been looking around quite a bit. I am strongly considering the R-Spec and have made a pretty decent deal. Trading in my G35 and going with Platinum on Black. Any words of advice, regrets, or recommendations before I pull the trigger on Wednesday?

Stating the obvious here but did you drive the R Spec?? My suggestion would be to drive all three 2012 models and see what you like the best. Make sure you drive over some rough surfaces to see what feels better for you. Get on the car a little bit to make sure you are okay with the hesitation before acceleration. A couple of factors that you may want to take note of are the harder turning steering wheel and the black trim in the 5.0 versus the wood trim in the 4.6/3.8. The R Spec also has limiting colors. If your color preference is not an option on the R Spec i would get a 4.6. Which ever model you buy i would look it over carefully for imperfections. As noted on this board a few members have seen orange/rust colored spots (rail dust??) on some of the chrome trim as well as blemishes in the black painted area of the R Spec wheels. I personally had two deep scratches in my back windshield that i noticed a few days after taking the car home.

At first I figured I didn't want the R-Spec because it's not a true sport sedan. It doesn't have sport seats, adjustable ride, shift paddles, sport exhaust, etc. But I liked its stance with the larger wheels, and I'm a sucker for horsepower and 429 is a LOT of horsepower. :) What clinched it for me was that the price premium over the 4.6 was so small. I ended up thinking, "if you get this car and own it for many years, you'll kick yourself that you didn't get the R-Spec."

My main concern was the ride. I knew that the Genesis in past years had some knocks against in reviews it for ride quality. While I read that the ride had been improved for '12, I also read early R-Spec previews where a couple of reviewers didn't like the R-Spec's ride, saying it was a bit stiff/jittery. I ended up driving it and being extremely happy with the ride. It's important to drive the R-Spec over roads you know well. It's entirely subjective. Don't let other people tell you that the ride is fine or that it's unacceptable. Give it a good test over roads you're familiar with in your G35 and decide for yourself.

So was it worth it? Well, every time I get into the gas in my R-Spec I smile. It builds speed so effortlessly it's just wonderful. I love always having ample passing power. And I've discovered a special kind of joy that the R-Spec is a sleeper. It doesn't announce itself with hood scoops, spoilers or coffee can mufflers. Cops don't give me a second glance, yet if I want to I can go into warp speed. :D

I can't speak to the car's handling prowess because I'm not going to hurl it into a corner with so much speed that I need to worry about breaking traction. I like having power but I'm not a teenager any more and I am not going to endanger myself by going nuts around curves. If I wanted to do that I would've gotten a Boxster.

The only knock I have against the performance is that the shifter's software can be a little slow. Occasionally I'll put my foot into it, and revs start to build but the transmission takes a couple of beats before going "oh, I'd better get into the act and downshift!" This isn't unique to the R-Spec, it's a known trait of the Genesis.

My younger brother currently has 07 G35 so I had opportunity to drive that car.
If you liked G35 ride (a little stiff suspension but smooth power) R-spec is just that but with more power and more interior room/tech. I may be exaggerating a little bit but you will see the R-spec as an upgraded ride from G35 after you test drive it. If you are fed up with stiff suspension, 3.8 and 4.6 should be better though.

Get the 5.0!
You wont regret it!

Thank you to everyone who responded to my questions. I will be on the way in the morning to make the deal. Hopefully the dealership that I have been working with on the phone stands by thier words and I am not disappointed after a 2 hour drive. I have driven the 3.8 and the 4.6 in 2010 when I was contemplating a purchase. I did not end up going through with it at the time but I am now ready and way over due for a new vehicle. I have had several sports sedans and sports cars. 2004 & 2007 corvette, 2006 acura TL-S, my current 2007 G35, ETC, ETC.. I guess the main concern is I have never even considered Hyundai until the last year or so after almost making the mistake of over paying for that little Lexus badge. Just could not do it and ended up at Hyundai where I drove the 2010 models. At the time I was car shopping frustrated and decided to wait another year. That being said I have had several vehicles that had rough suspensions but that is usually a trade off for horsepower that I have always been a sucker for. My main concern on this vehicle is reliability, durability, and resale. I will have news tomorrow night with what happens after the trip. Again, thank you everyone for the support and comments. I will keep you posted..

Well, frankly I am contemplating on it too. Except I still have decent cars that won't fetch enough trade in value to step on the deal.

I won't worry about the reliability and durability of Hyundai except electronic quirks. They have come a long way to improve those. But as you might have researched, resale still isn't strong. It won't matter if you drive the car very long.(10+ years?)

Congrats! I also came off an 07 Infiniti G35X to get my 2012 3.8 Premium. You will not be disappointed. I only have the pup motor (3.8) and love the straight line speed! I'm jealous of the 5.0 owners!

:)

How much were you able to negotiate price on this car? How many did the have available? I went by the one of the dealers in Charlotte last week and they only had one R-spec, and the sales manager was using it for his personal car!

R-Specs represents a restyled athletic body that comes with aggressive front fascia and grille; performance wise, it is a best Genesis.

Sticker was $48,949 I paid $41,524 + TTL. The dealer had one on the lot but received a Black one the next morning.

Pretty much this.

I drove all 3 variants and found little if any difference between the 4.6 ride and the R-Spec. The dealer was willing to beat my USAA buying service cost so I signed on the line...pick it up Monday (24th) night after my Motozuma account meets the 30 day requirement. The shopping experience had a couple oddities. I drove a black R-Spec one night and was very impressed except for the rather rough ride. The car had the 5.0 direct injection motor, R-Spec floor mats and 19 inch R-Spec wheels but NO R-Spec badge on the trunk! The radio sounded pretty weak but I didn't have the time to tweak it on the test drive. Two days later I drove a titanium gray R-Spec and it was like a different car. The ride was smoother (didn't check tire pressures on either car). It handled better...much more precise steering and the seats felt much more supportive and comfortable. The black car had less than 100 miles on it and the titanium had about 30. Oh, and the titanium gray had the R-Spec badge on the trunk and the sound system was awesome. Needless to say I opted for the titanium gray which has unbelievable paint. The winged badges and wheel caps are on order. The internet process is clearly the way to go. No haggle, no hassle.

I purchased an R-Spec on Saturday, and a good friend has a 2010 Genesis 4.6 that I've driven/ridden in many times.

While subtle, the differences are pretty noticeable. It's *clearly* faster than the 4.6. I always though the 4.6 was fast but even my friend noticed the power immediately.

The handling is different. Steering is heavier (might be due to larger tires) but there is more road feel (he also drives an SRT Challenger)

It's hard to compare noise, since my friend replaced his tires with non-OEM tires, but he thought road noise was only slightly higher than his car, and quieter than the 2010 OEM tires which he disliked.

He definitely commented it feels "sportier" and the sound is different at full throttle.

So take from that what you will. The “harshness” people talk about is really related to how much more “sports” car you want with your luxury. For me, I like it better than the 4.6 because I come from a muscle/sports car affinity.

If you come from a Lexus/Mercedes background you may not like it. But I can understand why there are wildly varying opinions.

There is NO doubt there is a difference. Perhaps not much during a test drive, but live with both and you’ll know right away.

Amen. Well said C.C.
