  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

R-spec vs Chevy SS

I had an '08 G8. Turned it in under the lemon law after too many issues.

Last I heard they still hadn't fixed the timing chain streach issue in the V6. Maybe they finally did in '12, I haven't kept up with them since I got rid of my G8.

But there were a lot of suspension issues on both the GTO (Holden Monaro)and the G8 (Holden Commodore). The SS is just the newest version of the Commodore so it makes one wonder if the suspension issue were fixed. Some say it was due to the straping down of the cars on the boats when they were shipped.

And as you noted, drive shaft issues and rear end issues.

They also had issues with the seat belts breaking. Mine broke the cable due to a bad design. It rubbed on the seat supports and wore thru the steel cable after 2 years. Not good.

As much as I liked the car, it had too many issues that GM didn't address in future builds. When the timming chain issue came up in my car, and they didn't fix it properley, that was the last straw for me.

But the way GM handled my issues with my G8 swore me off of GM forever.

The LS motor may be bullet proof, but thats only a small part of the complete car. If the rest is failing, what good is a bullet proof motor?

Hyundai ain't no better. The battle and routes we got to take for oil consumption is crazy

I'd rather burn a little oil than have the timming chains go out evry 40K miles, the seat belt cable break every 2 years, the door locks go out every 2 years, the strut bushings collapse, the rear end go out every 50K. And that's just the major stuff.

At 30K I've only had a few minor issues with my '12 R Spec, the biggest being the stereo not keeping suround sound checked which was fixed with a simple SW upgrade.

Funny, but I just drove the SS to consider trading in my 12 R-Spec. A few things immediately stood out about the SS that were bad in my opinion, but YMMV...

First, the Genesis is much more refined in normal driving. Quieter, smoother riding, smoother drivetrain, and generally an entry level luxury car feel. The SS was louder, and the performance was only accessible if you wanted to attract attention. It shifted harder and rode stiffer even when not in a hurry. You would really have to push the SS to outrun the R-Spec, and since the SS is a drama queen, everyone would know you were speeding. The R-Spec has 95% of the performance with hardly any outward sign that you are breaking the law. Since I don't like cop magnets, I was not impressed at all by the SS.

Second, the overall build and materials in the SS are 'ok', but they are definitely not even entry level luxury. In my opinion, the SS is about 5K overpriced, but since it is a niche vehicle, they will sell a few of them to enthusiasts. The dealers seem to think they are the greatest thing ever, and don't want to discount them more than about $1500 right now. Give them six months and they will drop in price considerably.

All money factors aside, I think the Genesis is a better car. But if you are looking for an oversized muscle car, the SS may be great.
