  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I recently purchased a 5.0, the listing for it was R-spec but I didn't mind when I test drove it that the badge wasn't there so I thought it wasn't an R-spec. The previous owner did swap all the badges and remove the Hyundai words on the back. so I was a bit confused when I put my VIN into the tool I use at work (I work in insurance and we use a vin decoder for the car info.) and saw it was an R-spec. Is there any chance the R-specs wouldn't have a badge or would you think someone would remove that badge?

Don't know what it had but you already noted the Hyundai was removed. It was very common to remove badges for a clean look. I trust the VIN over decorations.

Some people on this forum did remove all rear end badges. Another possibility is that there was minor rear-end damage requiring a repaint, and they did not put new badges back on.

The Genesis R-Spec sedan was only available from 2012 - 2014. In 2012, there were some 5.0L non-R-pecs produced (and also some 4.6L non-R-Specs early in the model year), but from 2013-2014 all 5.0L Genesis sedans were R-Specs.

One difference between the 2012 5.0 non-R-Spec and the 2012 5.0 R-spec is that the interior wood trim on the R-Spec is a black ash color, whereas the regular 5.0L is more of a brown wood tone.

Ok so here's the deal, this is where I'm very confused. I have the brown wood grain, non dark chrome inserts, no badge, etc. I don't know about the suspension, but all I know is my VIN brings it up as an R-Spec, is this site weird about VINS or can I post mine for you guys to see for yourself?

Can you tell us what the model year is? What site are you using for the VIN lookup?

2012 was a weird model year, so not all sites may be correct about whether it is an R-Spec.

It's a 2012, made way later than the others, I'm using vindicator, it's a tool progressive reps use to get the information on a car when quoting, it's on our intranet.

If you have the brown wood grain, and non dark chrome inserts, I don't see how it can be a R-Spec. If you could get a part number off one of the suspension springs or shocks/struts, that would enable us to look that up and see if it is the R-Spec suspension, but not sure if the part numbers are on those components.

My guess: it's probably a 5.0 non-Rspec. The 5.0 had similar look and feel to the 4.6 (same wheels, interior materials/look, softer suspension). The R-spec was lower, much firmer, had the non-wood grain interior, and wheels with the flat machined faces and black paint, etc.

For 2012 the R-spec had staggered 19" wheels and larger front brakes than a 4.6 or 5.0

My last car was a 2012 R-Spec 5.0 which did NOT have staggered wheels (but they were 19" flat machined faces with black paint accents). My R-Spec badge had the chrome peel off probably due to our Canadian salt covered winter roads so I replaced it with a new one. The interior trim pieces were a black wood grain that almost looked like black plastic when not in direct sunlight. Hope this helps.

I have a 2013 black R-Spec with tan interior and have the lighter woodgrain inserts.

There have been differences between USA and Canadian models since the first Hyundai Genesis in 2009. Both USA and Canadian models are different than Korean models.

Give Hyundai service your VIN number and they can give you a print out of all the options for your car. My printout was about 5 pages long and suspect lists more than the VIN decoder does. Should provide the info you need.
Did this when determining what my interior color code was after ordering scuff plates that were black and not grey for the cashmere interior. M5 versus RY. My car is an odd one because it had the 17" Alloys, sunroof, heated seats, and sunshade but wasn't a tech package.

Oh and I debadge every car I buy. So if it was an R-Spec it wouldn't say it anymore either.

It's a regular 5.0, not an R-Spec.

A little late to the punch on this one, but it can very possibly be an Rspec even with the woodgrain interior.

Does your car have 19" wheels on it, or are they the split spoke hyper-silver 18's? That's the sure ticket there since all Rspecs get the 19" wheels. If you have 18's, it's a non- Rspec.

I have a '12 non-Rspec in Casablanca white/cashmere interior which is the light tan with the woodgrain trim. The only difference between my car and an Rspec is the suspension and wheels. (Rspec gets a slightly stiffer suspension and larger rear roll bar) Everything else, including the brakes are the same across the board for 2012.
Depending on which site you use to run the VIN, my car shows up as an Rspec even though it's not.

That being said, I recently looked at a 2014 Rspec that was identically trimmed as mine with the exception of the 19" wheels. (i.e. same color, same cashmere interior with no badging inside with the exception of the Rspec floormats.)

I've included a link to the car that I looked at along with a few pics of my interior..
All being said, you might have an Rspec, you might not.

Post or send me the VIN #. I can look up copies of the window sticker on some vehicles. Anything 2015 and newer, I can get. Prior to that, they are hit and miss.

Your car is likely a Premium Package car like mine. It came with 18" wheels. If you have touchscreen Nav, then its a Premium. If you have cashmere tan interior, the carpets are actually a dark brown color. What year is yours?
