Radar Detectors

I need to get the latest update on V1 and do side by side testing again. Other than pop how are the two stacking up? Last time I tested, had one of my updated (at that time) V1 against one of my Max first gen, and Max blew it away. Let alone the live app. I really want Michael Valentine to get serious again.. He could leap frog all this again and come out with a V2... In the end, he supports his user base UNLIKE Escort.. Who do NOTHING to keep customers upgraded. Except for the insult of a few shekels to "trade" a Max One for a Max2... Lazy butt arrogant Canadians (who control the "upgrade" program)... Of course, I am teasing. Could be their Cincinnati OH American counterparts who do not support legit upgrade programs.

That's funny about the blue LEDs; I too opted for the blue LED edition for my 9500ix (speaking of which, that just reminded me that I intended to eBay that).

Well, I picked up the V1 Grand Touring pack yesterday and did the install. My under mirror mount had already came so I assembled everything and got to work. Some pics of the install are below. I chose to conceal the remote display where the ashtray normally goes. I think this spot is ideal because the bright red lights should catch my eye right away. Especially if I dial back the brightness of the interior dashboard lights. In order to do this I had to drill a hole in the plastic and route the cable through the center console area out the side. Then instead of going forward under the dash I decided to route it under the floor mat in front of the floor mat "lock" then into the harness tunnel on the driver side and back up and over to the Savvy accessory plug in. For the V1 itself I routed it easily under the headliner where my dash cam cord was and down the A pillar. the only visible cord area is on the dashboard from the bottom of the A pillar to the side where the door closes. But it blends right in with the dash and is not noticeable.

Today on the way to work I got a K band off of a traffic/speed limit sign and a couple alerts that could have been false but seemed to be police traveling in the other direction of the freeway. I'm running in "advanced logic" mode so it filters out most of x band and stays more quiet.

One disappointment is that in order for the display on the V1 to stay lit up during the day the remote display has to be unplugged. I placed the savvy in such a way that it's an easy task. But still I wish there was a button or something to just make it an easy on/off to switch between displays.

Anyway, I'm going to join some detector forums and learn about how to program custom sweeps for my area and all that stuff.

Still using WAZE as I feel crowd sourcing data along with a good detector is the best defense since laser jammers are illegal in California.

Alright, I got a frequency on at least one instance radar that registered as "Pop" on the Passport Max2 but didn't register on V1. Again I couldn't locate the LEO, so it might be a false alarm.

33.675Ghz.

33.675Ghz.[/I suggest calling tech support. To see what they say.. In the past, Escort got pounded for false alerts on POP. Mostly from other radar detectors. They also got pounded for delayed real KA super wide band alerts when POP was turned on.. A big problem on the 8500 and 9500 series. V1 seemed to have the only POP solution that worked well at the time. Would be curious if they give you straight answer when you call and challenge them.

So a week or so in.... I'm really liking the V1 but as predicted I think it's only alerted me to the presence of 1 officer who was traveling in the other direction on the freeway. It reliably finds an electronic speed sign on my daily commute shooting K band.

I need to join some detector forums and learn more about how to customize the V1. Apparently there is an android app that is kind of a knock off of Escort Live for the V1 and uses the V1's bluetooth connection through the optional bluetooth android cord. I'm an iPhone person but apparently a lot of people buy cheapo android devices just to run this app and it's something I'm considering doing as well.

I've been running in advanced logic mode but still occasionally get noisy xband false alarms. I'd like to turn X off completely since it's not used in California (or nearly anywhere). Something interesting is my local Ralphs grocery store is always giving me false K band alerts however I imagine if I program in a custom sweep I could eliminate that.

I'm really only interested in bands that are used in California and Nevada and maaaaaaaybe Utah.

One thing I wish was included in the V1 is a three way switch to change between the V1 display, Remote Display or Both. During the day I wouldn't mind running both since it's easier to reach down for the mute button on the remote display but at night I'd like to easily black out the V1 display and only go with the remote display. Maybe someday they'll include this in an updated version.

Savvy has so far been performing well and I haven't had the battery issues some have reported in certain models of cars.

^^ nice report.

X-band seems to be enjoying something of a resurgence in North Carolina. This is new equipment, from what I read.

I'm not surprised. Last I heard it was only used in Ohio and a few very small municipal departments. It's not used at all in California to the best of my knowledge but I wouldn't be surprised if at some point we see a flood of xband coming back to get all the people like me with detectors who have turned it off. But here in LA I find most of the time it's the CHP and LA County Sheriffs Deputies doing the speed trap thing. LAPD I've never seen setting up speed traps (drunk driving traps are more their thing) and there's been plenty of times I've been behind an LAPD car on the freeway going 80+ mph. My understanding is LAPD can't pull people over on our freeways. Only CHP and County. Not sure if that's true or if I've just ran into a lot of lazy LAPD officers who don't mind me pacing them at well above the limit.

I wanted to keep things simple so I ordered a invisicord (invisicord.com). Be sure to get the "micro" version found under Nissan/Infiniti. Worth every penny.
The black plastic housing behind the rear view mirror pops off. The wiring harness can be disconnected and tapped into. View attachment 5378 The hot wire goes in with the gray wire as it is switched with the ignition. The ground is the black wire in the middle. The red wire on the opposite side of the gray wire is also 12V, but it is constantly on, causing you to manually turn your detector on and off so use the gray one. I'm very happy with the install. Looks very clean. View attachment 5379

Thanks for your response. I think I'm going to wire my Dashcam through that wiring harness in the housing. I just need to place a 12V to 5V microUSB convertor. How do you pop off the plastic housing behind the rearview mirror? How did you end up routing the cables? Thanks!

I'd like to provide an update on the V1 vs the Passport Max 2. I've got the latest editions of both, having updated both of them when I bought my 2015 Genesis in late February. Unfortunately, some are not going to like what I have to say because there are things that each of them does well that the other one is lacking, and where one lacks, it really lacks, such that I honestly wouldn't want to have one without the other.

  • In about 90 percent of the cases, the V1 still lets me know about both Ka band and K band alerts before my Passport Max 2...
  • ...at the expense of giving a lot more false-alarms than the Passport Max 2, which is both a good and a bad thing, read on.
  • The Passport Max 2 has an integrated GPS detector that it uses to lock out known alerts by geographic location, which is both a good thing and a bad thing, read on
  • Recently I passed a well-known K-band false-alarm on State Highway 105 near Lake Conroe. As usual, the V1 gave me its K-band false alarm that it always does at that location, and the Max 2 was as silent as a Church Mouse, smartly cross-referencing its internal databases and realizing that the K band in that location was a false alarm. There is only one problem: The V1 actually showed me two K band alerts, not just 1, and in this case there was a LEO heading west (the opposite direction) that was actively "hunting." The V1 eventually pegged with a K-band signal lock, while the Max 2 remained silent the whole time, despite a full-on K-band lock.
  • And now for the V1's Achilles heel, the V1, at least in Advanced Logic mode, does not always notify me about pop band radar. In fact I'd go so far as to say that either the Max2 is giving me false alarms, or the V1 is seriously deficient against Pop band. I'd say about half the time, the V1 is silent when the Max 2 alerts me.
  • Escort Live, the smartphone integration with the Max 2 is nice, but in some ways it's stupid. For example, if I'm on an expressway, it warns me about red-light cameras on the adjacent or intersecting road. It's not a deal-breaker by any means, but it does remind you that the technology is still evolving. Of course many would argue that it's better than the V1 smartphone integration solution, which is to say "none."
  • Speaking of Escort Live, there's something immensely satisfying about hitting that "report" button on your phone when a LEO is out hunting for civic revenue. And you'd be surprised at the times that LEOs are out trying to meet those quotas and fill those civic coffers. Late yesterday afternoon, when I was running to the store for a quick grocery item, 2 LEOs (from different agencies!!) were out hunting on the 4 mile road between my home and the nearest big grocery store. Now the people on that road at that hour are likely to be people just minding their business, in my case, trying to get home before the tornado comes (we needed D batteries for the flashlights in case we lost power). You might get some who've been drinking because of Memorial Day, but honestly you usually know when someone has been drinking by observing how they handle their cars in other ways. Yeah, it felt good reporting those guys.
  • I will continue to lambaste the cantilever mounting bracket of the Max2. Think of the cheap, rickety, creaky, plasticky dashes of a 1970s era American econobox. The Max2 mounting bracket is noisier than those. It is by far the most annoying sound in my car, and frankly, unacceptable in a $500 radar detector. If the V1 had better pop band radar support, I would get rid of the Max2 and just use the V1 with Waze in a heartbeat.

Great report.

This is interesting. Escort says this is not supposed to happen-- that it locks out frequency specific false alarms. So, theoretically, they are full of bull, or the LEO K band was the same frequency as the false alarm.

These three bullets represent the essence of the difference between the two and what I think is the primary purchase decision factor. If ultimate sensitivity is your priority and you drive on highways or do not mind false alarms, then V1 is the boss. If you drive in a lot of urban and suburban areas, and false alarms are a problem, then Max 2 is the boss.

I am curious about your experience with the first bullet. How material is the V1's notification advantage over the Max 2? Is it immaterial, like short difference, relative to how long it took before the LEO was finally in sight? Or, is it material, in that the Max did not pick it up until you need to make an urgent deceleration?

Great report.
Thanks!

Yeah it surprised me too, to be honest.

It is definitely material. In the case of instant-on, if the LEO is hunting, I usually get a "chirp" from the V1 before the LEO is in visual range when the LEO has tagged someone else. If that alert happens to be Ka band, I always slowdown immediately, because I can say with near 100 percent confidence that there's a LEO up ahead. By the time that signal registers on the Max2, it has been up to 10-15 seconds later, depending on how actively he's using his radar. Under some conditions, even when the signal has been steady, there have been times when the V1 was chirping away with increasing intensity while the Max2 wouldn't let me know until I was 1/4 mile away (which usually means you had better brake now).

Thanks!

Ok.. I have both new V1 and Max (prior to Max2).. V1 and Max tie on Ka most the time. Within fraction of second. One out of ten Max beats V1 by several seconds. And Max picks up pulse, or instant on Ka better than the V1 when LET are hunting down the road. Both on highway setting.. With full logic, and auto, about half the time, Max beats V1 enough to make a difference.

With K band, in highway and full mode for both, V1 seems to be better 70 percent of the time.. Insane false alarms when not in logic mode. In full logic mode, Max beats V1 for first alert every time when it is in auto mode (or any mode) For the GPS.... I warned folks in this forum and others back in 2014 of the resurgence of K band threat with brand new digital K band radar. Our county and state was one of the first to deploy in mass. The Max has not once done what was described. As a matter of fact, it has alerted K band when I thought it was a false area, but was not. And in one case the smart meter showed the frequency different than what entered by me as a false prior into the database (door opener not in its database Imlicked out manually). It knew the difference. The V1 will show 2 radar when this happens. But so will the Max (one grayed out from my block entry, and the active cop). In the built in database, never had it not warn me when cop was lurking at same GPS coordinate. Yet blocked out false signal.

There are so many false alarms with K band around here, it is total annoying with V1 even in full logic mode. Yet, with cops also using at least half K band now, that presents a problem.

The new K1 does seem to block out Audi radar, unless pop is turned on.. Then I have found it will sometimes pick up radar from other cars.. I have not experienced either detector false on my 2015 or 2012 radar... Oh, I own two V1 and two Max... Both V1 were upgraded to new version. Handed me new units over the counter it their HQ. I run both sets.. One in each Genny. Wiring is a mess for now.. At some point will fix that. Especially if I feel compelled to run both. Which I do at the moment.

Once I got my upgraded (new) V1s going, as a V1 cultist since day one V1 was introduced, there was a renewed comfort using the location arrows to back up the Max. For now will run both in both cars.. Wife got so frustrated with the falling on the V1 she abandoned it. She uses nothing and makes sure she drives where she does not get a ticket. The other vehicles she drives, no need.

The Live app is essential. And I like that both manual AND dectector reports on Live. Shows the difference. And gives more data with the reports by other detectors. More Intel to has situational awareness. Waze is all manual operation... So, combining it with V1 is only a stop gap for me. One I will not take..

The Newwest Max mount still is not as simple as setting the V1 against the glass and its suction cups.. But the Max mount has advantages. Last longer on the suction cup, easy to refresh with a simple wash, no need to carry extra suction cups like with V1. However, either one using the Blend mount makes them killer. For now, I alternated who has the mirror Blend mount between the cars.. I like the Max windshield mount better because it will mount the unit just below the tint line, yet the mount is above the tint band and is very solid sticking. Not hard core, just a preference.

I believe the laser overall V1 has best off axis detection.. But, mixed results.. Max has done fantastic a few times with great warning lighting up cars ahead of me, and the V1 was silent the whole time until I came into their view to light me up to check speed. I need to invest in the laser shifter for both cars.. Expensive.. But reported effective. And I like how it can be integrated into the Max.

My heart is with V1 and Michael Valentine. He (and Jim with him at Cincy Microwave) has been the stalwart in the industry. Got to know them while doing some light duty SCCA stuff. He can be accused as blue blood in the media. But, over time he has listened to the customer, and been very innovative.. for now, I need the Max and Live to survive and thrive... This combination is a better threat management package. Period. As a pilot, my planes did not rely on one set of avionics.. Including diversity of brands (and designs) for some primary instruments, nav systems, and communications. So too, this is what I do now. Both V1 and Max systems.

IF I have the time, and see the detector reported cops on Live, who look like they are in a kill box patrol, I will avoid the area.. I do not want to end up with some numb nuts, gunpowder fed, steroid fed, jack boot communist military style trained cops deciding I am the guppy with the colorful tail (not speeding), they feel compelled they need to pull me over... And as much as I move around, I have been seen as a random colorful guppy passing by their eyes... Including the Stingray equipped battle wagons they have attempting to illegally intercept all of our cell phones within their range. None of their business. I and millions of other have just bout had enough of these drones. Vote Libertarian. Your only chance to escape the Matrix agents 😎

I agree with those that choose to use two systems for now.. Yes, eccentric and expensive.. But for the power drivers who will do what is possible to avoid LEO, it is the only way to go..

In the decade this will all not matter. If the thugs and tyrants in .gov have their way, all autos will have chipped license plates, chipped cars, chipped subscriptions to access roads.. And this will include using this to determine speeds... Like the transponders in toll roads that are used to calculate speeds of traffic, AND individually (but they have not yet issued tickets for this. Yet). Plus mobile devices already give out our location and speed to the carriers and traffic reporting systems (like we use in our cars with a subscription).. One day soon, we will have to have faked out (illegal by then) transponders (RFID NFC or whatever), and be off grid with mobile devices while taking our right to "free travel between and inside the states". But, save this paragraph for another debate another day... Know this, unless people stop them, we will be telling old war stories about the days of radar wars to our grand kids.. And as Patton character in the movie Patton said, have to admit that during the war against our liberty, we "shoveled Shft in Louisiana" when asked (by our grandchildren) what did we do about the march against tyranny 😜

History lesson, and prophet of the potential future over.. 😇

This has most definitely not been my experience here in Texas. My Max2 rarely notifies me before the V1. I don't have a dog in the race; I'm open and honest about the shortcomings of both. I'm merely calling things like I see them.

I have a life flight team RN badge on my back window so I do not worry about such things as speeding tickets in Oklahoma or Texas

In a tyrant 1000 little kings system, position and status as a .gov sanctioned circle, has its privileges. 😇

Geez, did someone say you were not open and honest? Or that you did have a dog in the race? Or were you making some veiled insinuation about others? Knock it off.

I am adding my experiences to the collective Info.. That is the only "dog in the race".

Update: I finally fixed the astonishingly annoying squeaking and rattling of my Passport Max 2!!!

I cut out like a 1" square piece of shop paper towel (the cheap blue-roll stuff you can buy at WalMart) and I slid that in between the small metal mounting plane and the radar detector itself. In other words, I held it in place as I slid the radar detector onto the mount. Works like a charm. It's so nice to have a quiet car again!
