If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi,

I just bought a 2010 3.8 sedan this past weekend. When I turn radio I hear a constaint disturbing noise all the time. You can best hear it if the engine is turned off and you keep the volume at lowest level. And I am sure my expectations are not too high since my other car is not nearly as good as Genesis.

I am going to tke it back to the delaer and see what they can tell me about it. This may have to do with Antenna, tuner or the preamp but I did not expect it from a car whose Sound system has been so much praised.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Zack

Hello Zack, :welcome:
First of all, congrats on your new purchase.
I'm sorry to hear you're having this problem with the radio.
Could you give us more detail on this "constant disturbing noise" you're experiencing?

Is this radio(FM/AM) only, or is it always there when playing CD/DVDs or MP3 files?
I personally don't listen to radio stations much, but haven't noticed any noise so far.

Dan

I had an issue similar to yours with that radio in my 2009. I was able to figure out that it got worse when braking. The dealer replaced the radio and it has been fine ever since.

I did a little homework and here is what I observed: (al the experiments done with engine off )

1. When I use the XM radio I get much better quality than local FM radio (which may be expected ) my only issue is I am used to listening to some of the local FM stations and expect to get a cristal clear sound on those particular stations. I suspect the root cause of the poor FM soundT may be either my tuner or the antenna.

2. When I put the a CD in and lowered the voice to minimum (only one bar) I still hear the "disturbing noise" I mentioned in my first post. A little bit of white noise is expected but this feels to me eccessive. If you raise the volume the noise seems to fade away but indeed its is still there in the background. I am not sure if this would bother me on a long drive, I will find out today!

The first problem however was what had bothered me in a longer drive.
I will try both XM and normal FM radio again over longer drive (say 1/2 hour) to verify these findings.

Your audio system is obviously defective. Take it back to the dealer. Hyundai has replaced a fairly large number of defective head units for various reasons.

Our car had a whine in the audio. It was fairly high pitched and I couldn't hear it but it drove my wife crazy. After several months of hassles with the dealer and Hyundai, they replaced the head unit and fixed the problem. Our Genesis has the preiium nav, not the tech.

I just purchased a 2010 4.6 without the technology package. I also have the high frequency pitch as described. I also have an intermittent rattle coming from the rear package tray area. It doesn't appear to be the sunshade as I hear the rattle both up an retracted. Anyhow, we'll see what they say. I have found about five posts on this forum to substantiate the high freq. whine sound, although Hyundai tech support claims no knowledge of this issue. Hopefully the dealership will not fight me tooth and nail on this as the radio works, it just doesn't work right.

For any radio problems that are constant on your car... drag the dealership tech guy to one of the new cars on the lot and compare. Easy way to shoot down their "they all do that" or "that's normal" lazy arguments.

I picked up my 4.6 today from the dealer and the high frequency whine problem is fixed. They said they swapped out the head unit with a new model that was sitting on the lot. They also fixed the rattle in the back. They said it was a rear seat panel that was not secured properly. Basically, they fixed both issues on the first attempt. Now that is exceptional service. The service manager is Albert Moas at William Lehman Hyundai in Miami Fl. By far the best service manager I have ever dealt with and my last car was a 2008 Lexus Es350. IMO, The Genesis initially appears to be a much nicer car overall. I hope I will be saying this a year from now.

Thanks for the tip on Lehman Hyundai. I spend my winter vacations there and its good to get a recommendation on a dealer.

I'm glad to hear your problem was fixed promptly. It took me several months of complaints to the dealer (McElveen Hyundai in Charleston SC) and Hyundai to get to the same point. The dealer was clueless and Hyundai Consumer Affairs was unresponsive, with their Atlanta region being the worst. I also had to spend (waste) many hours and miles driving back and forth to the dealer on fruitless visits.

Perhaps Hyundai is finally getting a bit smarter about how to deal with complaints on upscale cars. We'll see how they now deal with the issue of selling 2010 cars with an absurdly obsolete 2008 nav database (mine doesn't even include McElveen Hyundai).

I did actually go back to the dealer and tried the radio of another car as Mike suggested. It turned to be just like mine!

I told the dealer how I surprised I was to get better radio reception on my old accord. He mentioned that he too had noticed that the radio seemd to fade away often as he drove Genesis along the HW. He said even Sonata had much better reception.

All things considered I beleive the antenna is likely to be responsible for this. For me this makes (non XM) radio almost useless. I wonder if Hyundai assumed everyone was going to just listen to XM radio.

Thank you all for the comments and responses. I

Don't notice any issues with reception in our non-tech Genny.

Is the high pitch frequency being heard by posters heard with radio on or off? I sometimes hear a high pitch noise with radio off. Very weird.

Hi,
I am pikereen.
This is doubtlessly a fourm worth taking after. You’ve got an amazing bargain to state regarding this subject, and so far information. I imagine that you ability to make individuals listen to what you need to state, in particular with an issue that would be so vital. I am happy to see this fourm. Several huge thumbs up, man

I have a 2011 4.6 sedan with the tech package. Sometimes when you turn on the radio you hear a high pitched buzz. Turning the radio off and back on does not get rid of it. The only way to get rid of it is to turn the vehicle off and restart it. The dealer indicated that since it does not do it when there that there is no problem. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you get it fixed? Thanks.

My 2011 3.8 Sedan began constantly humming or hissing whenever the volume on everything (xm, aux, fm, am) can be heard and it's terrible. Is the resolution to get a new head unit? I think that's what I read.
