  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Crazy thing - - while driving, the engine races like it is in neutral and then the car bangs into gear. The bang is so severe that it seems like the car got hit from the back.

It's happened maybe 4 - 5 times in theist month or so. Never had the problem before, Definitely something wrong; just want to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks in advance for any info or help.

Gosh that sure sounds like a transmission about to go.

Take it to the dealer, and have it checked out. Could be a trans issue, in which case there may be a stored code.

If the engagement is that violent, one might go so far as to suggest that you do not drive it and flatbed it to a dealer immediately.

It's going in on Tuesday to get checked out.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Car has 25,000 miles on it and was trouble free up until about a month ago when this first happened. I figure it's transmission related as well; just hope the dealer can find something. Otherwise, forget about a flatbed - I might just have to park it and fight with Hyundai.

You shouldn't have to fight with Hyundai. It'll be obvious to a decent technician if a transmission is slipping.

There have been two completely different transmissions used during 2009-2016 for the V6. It would help to let us know the model year you have. Also, are you the original owner?

Hi-Glad I came across your posting. I had the exact same thing happened to me about two months ago! I thought for sure I was hit in the back. Brought it into my dealer-they said if there was a transmission problem there should be a code from the computer diagnostics. There were no codes. It only happened once. They are unable to re-create it. I have a 2015 tech package, 3.8, with about 4000 miles. Please let me know if your dealer was able to come up with anything. Thanks

Mine is a 3.8 AWD with Signature, Tech and Ultimate packages. Took it to the dealer on Tuesday but they didn't find any codes and couldn't duplicate the problem. I've had it happen 3 or 4 times and the problem is EXACTLY as you describe it. Although I don't like to say it, I'm gladI'm not the only one having this problem.

this sounds a bit like the Gen 1 forum when they had some of the original hyundai 8 speed transmissions go bad. Will be interesting if we see that here with the 2015+ models. So far I have not seen any gen 2 owner actually have the transmission replaced but let's see if that happens with some of these recent issues.

Hello everyone!
I'm an active reader but this is my first time to post! :) I thought to share my experience as well. I own 2016 RWD 3.8 tech package. I started to exp this throttle lag last month happened out of no where! I took it to Hyundai dealer in Dubai. Fortunately it's under warranty so it has been for almost 1 month there and they've done the following:
1. Reprogrammed the gear and car computer (didn't work)
2. Replaced petrol bump and the tank!! Don't know why they replaced the tank but anyway it didn't work as well!
3. Placed an order to replace the whole gear unit (will be shipped from S. Korea at the end of this month -April) hopefully it will be solved!
I will keep you posted guys.
thx,
Hani

I've contacted Hyundai Motors and they want me to bring it to the dealer a second time - - which is now scheduled for Wednesday. I'll let everyone know what happens after that dealer visit.

The car spent an overnight at the dealer. They can't find any codes and they cannot duplicate the problem during road tests. I have advised Hyundai and they are having someone contact me in a few days.
I will keep you all posted and thanks again to everyone for your suggestions and information.

I have a 2016 AWD 3.8 Sedan and mine did the same thing 4 times in first 4000 miles. Dealer said no codes show, but they did a software update. All seemed good until just last week when it did it again. 8800 miles. All 5 times the same situation - cruising at 30 mph and moderately accelerating to change lanes - revs for 1-2 seconds then slams into gear. Very disturbing. Last time it happened the tranny was in Sport mode. Cant recall what mode it was in on first 4 times. Just spoke with Hyundai dealer and they said once again that they cant find any codes and cant get it to repeat so there is little they can do. I told them to figure out a better answer via their technical support dept and call me back - I will be keeping the loaner car until i am satisfied.

Thanks for your comments. Yours is now the 3rd car posting the problem on this forum. I've had it happen twice as you describe but also twice when I was slowing down. Thankfully I didn't hit the car in front of me. That's what makes me almost afraid to use the car; but, I don't have much of a choice. The dealer people have been good; but, as in your case, they can't find any codes or duplicate the problem - - even on a 40 - 50 mile test drive. Unfortunately, the customer service people at Hyundai are not so good. After telling them repeatedly that the problem cannot be "made" to happen, their last suggestion was to take the dealer service manager for a ride to show him the problem. But, I can't put too much faith in them since they also wrote me "I’m sorry I have been unable to reach you via telephone thus far" even though both of the numbers I gave them are covered 24 / 7 with answering / voice mail capability.

My 3.8 had this happen once under moderate acceleration once at about 3,000 miles. The dealer couldn't replicate nor were there any codes. Has not happened since; now with 12,000 miles.
