  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anyone experienced a random ticking sound that seems to be coming from the steering column while driving?

It may be from a worn rubber/plastic steering bushing/coupler.

The issue is pretty common on other Hyundai and KIA models with electric steering; so it may be an issue on our cars as well.

I have a Cadenza with that electric power steering setup (and my daughter has a Sonata), but the G80 I have has an entirely different electric power steering setup. In the case of the Genesis, the power steering motor is down on the rack, not inside on the steering column. Have a look at yours to see what you have.

From my understanding the electric steering system has a motor assist located on the steering column that works with the electric power steering rack on all the systems including our Genesis models.

The coupler part that goes bad on the other KIA/Hyundai models is located on the steering column motor behind the steering wheel, not the actually electric steering rack motor under the car.

Here is the 5.0 electric column motor assembly behind the steering wheel, which probably has a coupler as well.

The 2018 service manual I have shows the same. It shows the motors that adjust the memory tilt and telescope features of the steering wheel on the column and the motor that gives steering power assist on the rack. Do you have any documentation otherwise?

This is all I got. I am hoping that my Genesis do not have a rubber coupler that goes bad in the column. I really do not want to have a clinking steering wheel.

Hopefully, Hyundai got it right in our model.:)

Where'd you dig up a G80 service manual?

Yeah, and the dealer replaced 2 clock springs since 2018. Yet the sound is there.

Going in again in the coming weeks for another round of review.

I don't have a Genesis but my brand new '22 Kia Stinger GT1 is doing this exactly. However, it only does it under certain conditions. You must be accelerating (doesn't matter how much) and you must be >= 25 mph. You can thing turn the steering wheel past a certain degree to replicate the digital clicking/whining noise. Is this happening on every time or does it require certain conditions?

Yes, I had this issue with my 2015 3.8 g80, seems to be a common problem. They replaced the steering wheel and haven't had an issue since.
