  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Greetings all - or re-greetings as it were. I started on this forum back in 2015 when I got a 2015 DH G2 Hyundai Genesis "G80" Ultimate AWD 3.8 on CPO and extended the B2B to 100k. I had the car for over 5 years and put well north of 100k on it. I was pretty active on the forum during that time. I had the transmission issue and went through warranty replacement, had the creaky sunroof issue and spent a lot of time trying to resolve it myself before ultimately going through warranty replacement. There were a couple of other small issues but overall I loved the car, and between this forum and my own efforts I became very intimate with it. I did the airbox flapper delete for more immediate & smoother power delivery, the LED accent brightness mod which turned them into DRLs, and a host of other things. I also got together with several other Genny owners around Chicagoland over the years and am probably responsible for 9-12 German to Genesis converts up until 2020.

I was also one of the first to drive & report here on the 2017 G90 upon its release and was looking very forward to a CPO 1st gen G90 as being my next ride (despite all of Turnme's hatorade towards it). It was quite sad the day I traded the 80 away towards a new Highlander on lease instead of a G90 - but circumstances & an aging father required me to change vehicle platforms, and the GV80 was fresh... but did not appeal to me from interior, exterior or price.

For all intents and purposes I had left Genesis behind at least for the time being, and I had left these forums behind as well.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, with recent circumstance changes yet again, and an upcoming end of lease on the Highlander. It has been great, and I have loved having an SUV - but despite it having several of the essential bells and whistles that were on the G80 Ultimate - it was nowhere near as smooth, quiet, comfortable and satisfying. So - I started looking back at Genesis - the G90 specifically.

I remembered I was not impressed with the mid-cycle refresh of it for 2020... namely the grille. I liked the headlight update, the taillight update, and the fact that the interior was essentially untouched from the 2017-2019 models.... but that grille was a huge turnoff. As well as the stock rims - which were a huge and unnecessary downgrade. The previous turbines were fine & quite beautiful by comparison. Over time the front grille has grown on me just a little bit - but I still really don't like it, and now the current generation is even more obnoxious.

I recently started researching the G90 anyhow between here and elsewhere online and am sadly disappointed in the direction that is has taken since its introduction. I will go more into the lengthy list of turnoffs in another thread in the 90 forum, perhaps... but the long and short of it is I am not going to be getting into a current generation 90. Between exterior and interior design, gadgetry and pricing - they have made a significant shift away from who their initial target market was, and the numbers are already showing that it has cost them dearly in sales compared to the 1st gen as that are now playing in a sandbox they don't belong in. In fact - after having recently taken the wife on a recent test drive of a 1st gen G90 - I am looking very likely at going that direction, instead.

So, I am on the hunt for a low-ish mileage 1st gen G90, preferably not black or brown on the exterior and interior (though I could do a black exterior with a non-black interior if pressed). Specifically I am looking for an Ultimate, AWD that has been well cared for. I know it will take some time to find the right car - and I am not at all in a rush. But hopefully something comes along in the next few months.

Until then - I will be on here catching up on a few years of posts and developments for the G90 and possibly the brand, and trying to help out the G90 and DH forums as much as possible. It is good to be back, and I hope to be around for a while if I am able to find the G90 I am seeking.

It's very nice to see you back and I'm glad you didn't forget about us. The new design has grown on me and I really find the new G90 to have major road presence. However, the first generation has a timeless design - and I have no trouble understanding why you prefer it. That generation is the best luxury sedan you can buy for the money. I do hope you get it and I hope you'll keep us posted.

Yep, that is the plan... enjoy the trip home. :) What better way to do it?

A 21 (and most 20's) are out of price range (need to stay under 40)... and my pref is for the G1 body anyhow. Though if the right deal fell in my lap on a 20 I would take it.

I've been watching cars.com, carmax, autotempest, and a handful of others. There were 2 candidates that popped up - but 1 sold just before I had a friend go out there to inspect it - and the other was listed and sold on the same day before I had a chance to talk to the sales rep. We will see what happens in the coming months. :)

How I miss that day! Especially, the face of the Bentley salesman when we fooled him to believe our cars were Bentley's! Remember? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Yeup.... he didn't know what to think when we finally told him "Hyundai". Good times.... and had sooo many instances like that the first couple years of ownership.

I saw in the other thread about if I still lived in the area - and I do not. After 15 years, Chicagoland had finally worn me down enough and I went north, in the suburbs of Green Bay. I moved dad in with me from the UP as he was having issues in his sunset years and the winters were not being kind to him up there. His family is in this area, all my cousins, aunts & uncles... so - it was a good move for him.

The wife likes to visit Chicago - so we go 3-4 times a year, and we were just there this past weekend in fact to celebrate her birthday. If/when we get a 90 in the next 2-3 months it will most likely be from out of state, and of course will likely end up travelling through Chicago - so we will try to connect then for a quick photoshoot - or other shoot. When I lived in the far west burbs I was a frequent flyer at RKA.

Hope all is well with you and the roads are treating you well for work. :) We will touch base.

Sooo..... not completely sold on it yet - but the scale is actually tipping a little bit in favor of a new Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy.

The original plan was to go with a G90 and then get an old, few-thousand (up to 5) dollar SUV or perhaps even a pickup for when we need to haul something. After discussions with the wife however - we did want to see what SUV options there were which would be close to a Genesis in comfort, ride quality and features - and would be reasonably priced. As mentioned above - we currently have a 21 Highlander Limited and we would want to stay at least this big.

Obviously this knocked all the German offerings out of the running - and I wouldn't consider them anyhow. Acura's MDX is too small, Lexus' LX is just a slightly nicer Highlander at almost double the price. So we did go to look at the GV80 - keeping in mind we would go CPO - and it was certainly nice. But the prices are up there - even used or CPO. So just for the sake of doing so - we kept looking around, with the thought of coming back to the GV80 on CPO most likely if we even decided to go the SUV route.

We checked out the Kia Carnival SX Prestige - which is huge inside and pretty sharp looking outside. Has fantastic features, great seating, a very wide windshield - but it was front wheel drive and not available in AWD. Was still considering it until we took it out on the road. Oh my god is it LOUD inside. Concrete highways and adjacent traffic noise was downright annoying - and fatiguing just in the 20 minutes we had it on the road. There is obviously no body/chassis isolation like what you can get in a Genesis or other luxury brands. The wife and I both crossed it off the list immediately - which really made her unhappy as she loved the flexibility it offered, and the flat-deck side door entry (good for elderly folks).

While we were there - and mostly for giggles - we took out the dual motor (AWD) EV9. Very impressive on features, comfort, ride, handling, and quietness on the highway. Better than our Highlander. Put it in sport mode and went on and off a couple of highway ramps just to enjoy that part of it - and man is it QUICK! With the rebates and stuff on it right now - it is actually affordable, and of everything we drove it gave the most smiles. Unfortunately we are road-trippers, and are looking to continue to do so while upping the comfort over the very-well appointed Highlander we currently have. So - range and downtime is an issue, and that knocked the EV9 out.

We were going to take out the Telluride - but I knew it was just a slightly knocked-down version of the Palisade - so I said let's just go drive that. It's a stark difference between any of the lower trims vs. the Calligraphy. But I have to say that as far as features, comfort, luxury and quiet - it honestly seemed no less in any category than my old G80 (DH model) - and other than a little bit of noise from the far-back - it is otherwise on-par with the 1st gen G90 in fit, finish and feel. It uses the same felt headliner and the same double-laminated side glass to cut down on noise - and otherwise had every feature that the GV80 had. While not quite as quiet as the GV80 - it is about 90% of the way there and certainly more quiet and smoother riding than the Highlander. We both came away from that drive a LOT more impressed than we thought we were going to be. As a result - it is now under heavy consideration vs. our original plan.

I honestly think Hyundai is shooting itself in the foot with this offering. At least in the luxury space. It is doing to itself (Genesis) what Genesis is also trying to do to the luxury brands with Genesis as an offering. The Palisade Calligraphy gives you 90% of a GV80 at less than 70% of the cost. We can get into a brand new, AWD with 3 years included maintenance for the cost of a CPO GV80. Those of you looking at new or CPO GV80s may wish to give the Calligraphy a go if you are at all worried about $. There are notable differences between the 1st and 2nd generation (which started in 2023) - so only really look at 23 or 24 & 25 models (soon).

So - that's where things are at right now. We are still thinking things over, watching reviews and looking at things to pick on... and may take another G90 for a ride again before we ultimately decide. But - we may stick with the luxury SUV route - albeit better than what we have, or we may still decide to go with the G90 and get something else on the side - which will of course expand our vehicle flexibility.

Decisions, decisions. First world problems and all that. :)

The dollar/benefit ratio is always an issue. I've always tended going with the top model knowing it is not the best transportation value. To get all the features that my 2018 G80 Ultimate had, the sticker price is about $10,000 more for a 2024. Sure, there are some other refinements

I no longer drive as much, no daily commute, not as many trips so my use has gone down from 20k to 8k a year. My choice? Sonata Limited. Had everything my G80 had for 25k less. Just could not justify it. Your money, your choice.

So - it's done, so it seems. Picked up a 24 Palisade Calligraphy AWD yesterday afternoon on a 3 year lease. With the wife's projects and us also transporting my sunsetting father frequently (who has difficulty getting into low-slung cars) - it just made a bit more practical sense than the G90. If I were still single, or if dad was still more mobile - we probably could have done with the G90 and an older, small SUV.

Only put about 50 miles on it so far - pretty happy with it. Has all the features I could want - and some I don't lol... fantastic seats (massaging for the driver), and plenty of comfort. Needs a little bit of dynamat in the furthest rear area - but other than that it is a slightly "lite" version of a GV80 at a lot less money.

I'm taking the roof rails off as they make a bit of a whistle - and will put them back on only when I need them (probably never).
