  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
No Genesis Yet!
I read the early 2012s have potential to use a lot of oil. If true, then what month of production did that cease? I read that 2013 is OK.
I have owned 14 BMWs in the past and this will be my change of brand initiative. I have wanted a Genesis for years. My 2000 BMW 740il finally took out the timing chain rails but the engine did not detonate. It does have 258,000 miles on it, so it still makes me made that this well know problem with the engine is common.
Back to Genesis.. Do any years of the R-Spec have issues for me to be on the lookout? How about the 3.8 model. Anything there? I do my own work on all cars so I speak the language if you want to offer details. Thanks in advance for any help you can send my way.

the 5.0 v8s are pretty solid but i read a few having a oil issue but keep in mind this does NOT happen to all 12 Rspecs .

Go with 2013 year model.

'12 4.6 and 3.8 are solid drivetrains. The 5.0s with build dates before April 2012 had high probabilities of oil burn issues (rings). 4.6 is PFI, and the 3.8 and 5.0 are GDI.

General comments: I tell folks not to own one of these cars out of warranty, but you're a many-times-over BMW owner so you're used to stuff breaking on big wallet cars with high maintenance costs. For the Genesis, parts sourcing is very limited as everything comes from Korea, or your local U-pull-it, that's it. Head units, Radar cruise units, and ABS (HECU) modules cost ~$3000 each to replace at the dealer, and the latter is a common failure in <2013 cars.

Aftermarket is basically nil on these cars.

So far my 2014 R-Spec has given me about 72,000 trouble-free and most enjoyable miles. As always, YMMV.

i been a owner of a 12 rspec since 2013 "KNOCK ON WOOD" so far problem free.

I would like to know your current mileage. My opinion now is that like anything else, some cars are gonna fail and most are not. Using the cost of extended service plans as a tangible guide (premiums are based on claims paid history per specific model vehicle, so Camrys are cheap and BMW/Mercedes are nearly triple the cost), the Genesis models are in with the Camry premiums, so my belief is that with the April 2012 build date, the Genesis I targeted will not suffer oil consumption excesses or anything else. Plus 'my Genesis' to be is still under the factory 10/100 drivetrain warranty with the original owner. :)

CURRENTLY 74K

Well 2013 Rspec owner here
Bought the car in the low 30k range July 2016 now sitting at 133k 31/2 yrs + later
My car burns oil (not all do )just unlucky I guess)
Make sure you get a catch can a must on these cars .
I had to have the transmission replaced at 49k
Hard shifts and skips ...Under warranty thank god more on this in a moment ,
It’s been a great car usually maintenance original brakes lasted 90k spark plugs etc
Had numerous evap codes three separate times
Replaced pvc valve twice and gas cap for peace of mind
Now back to the transmission just got back from the dealership tonight the reman tranny only comes with a 1yr /12k warranty
Cause after only 84k on the new one it started again skips jerks etc the reprogrammed it but to no avail
There going to talk to hyundai to see if by a miracle they will cover it or at least a portion
In good faith as I’m a loyalty Hyundai guy 8 in a row since 2001
God I hope so cause at a cost of 8-9k for a new one with labor only to worry it would only last another say 50k Is a hard pill to swallow the cars only worth 9-10k and would be on its third trans
Wish me luck
Not trying to sway into not getting one cause I love the car and not everyone gets issues

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I have a 2013 Rspec - drives like "new". meaning I can drive it hard, highway cruse or in town and it is great. YES I have replaces the accessories (starter, alternator, water pump) but the engine and transmission drive great.
No catch can on the engine and I have always changed around 4-5000 miles with regular oil. Though I use synthetic on my other cars. Just dont want to pay for the 8Q this car takes.

No transmission replacement (I did get the fluid changed at the dealer around 80000 miles)/ Shifts perfectly

my 2012 R spec has 129,000 miles on it and never a problem of any kind, especially oil burning. Never uses a drop of oil between changes. I use highest grade of full synthetic only.

I don't know if the OP is still on here or not, but maybe this will at least help someone else a bit.

Quick summary: 740iL = luxury sedan with sporting intentions, Genesis (any engine) = sport sedan with luxury intentions.

Longer description: As someone who also owns a 740iL (1998, pre-facelift and pre-VANOS), I can tell you that the Genesis has a much firmer suspension, and you will be able to corner a lot harder with very little body roll. My car has the 4.6L, and is not an R-Spec, and it still has nearly 100 hp over the BMW 4.4L V-8. The difference in acceleration and cornering ability is astounding, when driven back-to-back. Having said, that, I need to clarify that my BMW (I don't know about yours) has 16-inch wheels and tires, which give a much different type of ride than the 18-inch setup on the Genesis. Haven't had much experience with 18-inch wheels on the BMW.
I will also add that, so far, the BMW has more engine noise and less road noise, while the Genesis has more road noise than the BMW, but the engine is practically silent unless you really get on the throttle. But I'm hoping the road noise in the Genesis will quiet down a bit whenever I replace the tires.
Both cars are similar in size, with the Genesis being a few inches taller and wider.
In my observation and personal experience, the Genesis is a good bit sportier and more engaging to drive than *my* 740iL (I obviously can't comment on yours), but my 740iL is more "relaxing", with more of an "old-school luxury" type of ride.
Problems I've had with my Genesis 4.6 so far: Bad A/C compressor (now fixed/replaced), Cracked/broken sunroof tracks, which prevents the tilt function from working right, but still allows me to open and close it as desired (not fixed yet). These can happen to any Genesis, not just R-Spec models.
Bottom line: if you find one you think you'd like, I'd say buy it and try it, as they are a pile of fun to drive, especially if you have good driving roads around. Your Results May Vary, as they say...
