Rear differential assembly replacement at 2500kms

Just wanted to let people know about this issue in case they have the same concerns.

I bought my gv80 2.5t advanced (Canada) a month ago. It's a demo with 1200kms. I noticed a whirring/rubbing sound on the right side early on and brought it to their attention. Took them a couple of weeks to get back to me (I had to follow up) and then pick up the car. They left me with a G70, which I didn't take issue with as I figured it would be a few days or week.

The rear differential assembly has to be replaced and they don't have the parts. July 9 is the delivery date but they said it could be later than that.

The other (relatively) minor issue is that the battery won't charge to full capacity so the Idle Stop Go stopped working after a week.

Anyone else hear a similar whirring/rubbing sound only when you take your foot off the gas or the break when coasting?

Really disappointed with my first Genesis. My two previous brand new Hyundais didn't give me any major issues like this, but I guess the parts would have been more readily available.

UPDATE: After going to my service appointment, turns out the rear differential needs replaced on my GV80 3.5TT Prestige at 4800 Miles. I was not as lucky as you with the dealer taking it out of a new car on the lot. They just ordered it and said they would let me know when it comes in but that it was okay to drive in the interim. They even talked to the manufacture and they said it would be fine. Not sure I want to try it.

Same issue. Bought GV80 2.5T Prestige in January 2021. Noticed "whining" sound from rear of car. Dealer said I need new rear differential assembly. Car has only 5,000 miles - - - very disappointing. Dealer said another customer had same problem and has been waiting for over a month now to get replacement parts.

Decided to drain/fill the rear diff today and the fluid was super dark, but at least it didn’t smell burnt. Had a decent amount of metal in suspension, but nothing concerning on the magnetic drain plug. Wasn’t expecting the fluid to be so dark after only 7600 mi. Will have to keep an eye on it. It did seem like it was a bit under filled from the factory though.

i have had 2 chevy trucks with under filled rearends 1 was so bad it ate up the axle bearings in 7000 miles. i always check ck them the first day i get them home now as the dealer doesnt during the pdi

Might be eligible for a Lemon Law replacement...you might check out the standards to see if your situation qualifies. Probably not yet, but if you continue to suffer expensive failures that make the car useless, you might be entitled to a new car.

Any updates Geeves? My wife's 3.5 Prestige is currently waiting for a new diff. Fingers are crossed!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I had looked that up and 3 of the same type of issues in a year is the magic number. We still have 6 months to go. I really hope this last fix does the trick. So far, so good.

In my case, if it were an under filled diff, it would not have failed twice already. It was definitely full the second time and still there were metal filings in it the second time. They replaced everything rear of the transmission this time, and updated the software. So far so good.

If you starved a diff with low oil, flushed the metal out and refiled it with fresh high quality oil, I can guarantee it will still fail in short order, full or not. That metal came from the gear teeth, they are no longer meshing correctly, that won't heal. It's just a matter of time (miles/KM's).
