  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rear differential assembly replacement at 2500kms

Any updates Geeves? My wife's 3.5 Prestige is currently waiting for a new diff. Fingers are crossed!
We got our GV80 Prestige back and this time they replaced everything from the transmission back and they said the software(I did not get details or even know if this will be an across the board software change or just mine). So far it sounds and drives great but we are still in the early stages. I will update again after we have put more miles on it.

If you starved a diff with low oil, flushed the metal out and refiled it with fresh high quality oil, I can guarantee it will still fail in short order, full or not. That metal came from the gear teeth, they are no longer meshing correctly, that won't heal. It's just a matter of time (miles/KM's).
It was not starved of fluid, that is just what other people are being told about theirs and my rear diff was replaced but failed again with the new one.

Yikes, thanks for the clarification.

def sounds like a design flaw or a batch of bad parts

could you give us the trim level and build date thanks in advance

Just wanted to let people know about this issue in case they have the same concerns.

I bought my gv80 2.5t advanced (Canada) a month ago. It's a demo with 1200kms. I noticed a whirring/rubbing sound on the right side early on and brought it to their attention. Took them a couple of weeks to get back to me (I had to follow up) and then pick up the car. They left me with a G70, which I didn't take issue with as I figured it would be a few days or week.

The rear differential assembly has to be replaced and they don't have the parts. July 9 is the delivery date but they said it could be later than that.

The other (relatively) minor issue is that the battery won't charge to full capacity so the Idle Stop Go stopped working after a week.

Anyone else hear a similar whirring/rubbing sound only when you take your foot off the gas or the break when coasting?

Really disappointed with my first Genesis. My two previous brand new Hyundais didn't give me any major issues like this, but I guess the parts would have been more readily available.
I had To have the rear differential replaced also I think it was at 6000 miles. Very frustrating!!

I started noticing a "growling" noise at low speeds on my 2021 GV80 at around 10,000 miles. I now have 14,500 miles and have had it to 2 dealers trying to repair. I am currently in my 4th week awaiting parts to replace my rear differential. I am concerned that this may be a major problem with this vehicle. I am interested to see if anyone has had this problem completely remedied.

I'm having the same issue on my GV80. Only 3000 miles. Can you tell me what dealer you ate taking it to?

Same here, I've been hearing that sound between 28-39 mph. Easily reproducible by letting up on the gas pedal and finding that coasting pushing feel. I took it to one dealership and they said the sound was normal. I of course was not happy with that explanation. I made an appointment at another dealership and they confirmed today that I need a new rear diff. They ordered the part today and said it should be in next Wednesday. When the part does arrive, they'll call me to schedule an appointment. I am concerned that it'll happen again as well if they have not redesigned the part. They told me that they have done 2 of these already. I wonder how many people don't realize that the noise is an indication of a problem and are just driving it until it just fails. Oh, I forgot to mention I have a 2021 3.5 Prestige with just a little over 6200 miles.

This is not a starved of oil situation. The rear diff was replaced both times. I have worked on cars most of my life and I know it won't heal, never thought it would. This is a design issue, plain and simple. They tell me now that it has been corrected. We will see.

I wonder if this forum “moderator” could tell us how many participants have reported this problem (even though obviously not a true numerator/denominator).

My 2015 sedan rear diff did exactly the same thing a whistling/whine at coast and slight acceleration. I could play a tune on it. Rear diff was replaced under warranty and whistle is gone.

Is there any connection between the electronic limited slip differential and these failures or does it seem from this forum that all differentials are subject to failure? Perhaps someone with access can check to see if there is a "soft recall bulletin" presented to the Genesis dealers that we don't get to see?

My GV80 3.5T AWD exhibited the same symptoms at around 5000 miles and the differential was replaced under warranty which resolved the problem. This is definitely something to watch for and to get resolved while the vehicle is under warrantee. I have also had a problem with the battery maintaining charge. I had it parked for 3 weeks and the battery was completely dead when I tried to start it. I will loo for this issue in a separate thread.

My 3.5T Prestige GV80 is having the same isse and ot only has 3500 milles. Can you tell me what dealer you took it to so I can use it for reference when I take it to my dealer? I don't want to get the run around from dealers saying it's not an issue.

2021 Genesis GV80 rear differential replaced July2021 for bearing noise failure at 3500 miles. Trying to find battery information for R&R any help?

Update: eLSD differential completed yesterday @ 14k km and picked up this morning. Touch wood, so far, so good. Although you had to be listening carefully to hear it, the noise from the old diff is gone.

The tech reportedly noticed that the connection between the U-joint & the old diff was "looser" than the new replacement. Fingers crossed.

FWIW, my dealer received the replacement diff last month however didn't have any loaner vehicles available until yesterday. Thankfully, I was in no hurry & fine with waiting.
