  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Not really an engine topic but there isn't a category for Drivetrain or Chassis Issues (hint hint!:D)

Does anybody else have a noticable whine from the Differential under load? On my car it seems to be worse at certain speeds, particularly around 50mph. If I unload the drivetrain by taking my foot off the gas it disappears.

I get a slight noise when it's really cold out (-15 celcius and lower), until the differential warms up.

Mine is the opposite, it seems to be worse once the Diff has warmed up. It's not howling, but it is definitely noticable even with the radio on in the background. I have mentioned it to the dealer but they suggested waiting for the warmer weather (& summer tires?) to investigate.

First of all, I am female and don't know much about cars, but am having a issue that may be like what you describe.

Between 45 and 50 mph, I hear a whine coming from the rear end. If I let off the gas, it goes away (is that what you mean by a load?).

I'm wondering if I should be concerned, or if this is a normal thing for a rear wheel drive.

What ever became of your problem?

NOLa

Also adding-I replaced the 2 rear tires, I had an unrepairable nail hole in one and my husband just decided to change them both rather than having one new one, so it isn't a tire issue.

I drove my V6 today at 45-50 mph for a fairly long time with the sound system turned off. I did not hear any unusual noises, although the drive train was slightly quieter when coasting (foot off the accelerator).

The whining noise is still there, although no better or worse.
It is particularly noticable in the 45-50mph range and disappears above & below that speed range. It is not that bad, just annoying in an otherwise very quiet car. I doubt I would have heard it in many other vehicles.

NOLa - Yes the sound is only there when cruising at steady throttle or accelerating, ie. Under load. If you lift off the gas then the sound goes away. It is not a normal thing on RWD cars and if it was doing it at all speeds it would definitely be a sign of a differential problem. Since it seems to happen only in a very limited speed range, my guess is that it is a resonance issue that only seems to affect some Genny's. I would mention it to your Service Advisor next time you are there (as I did) just so the problem is documented in case it worsens. Otherwise I wouldn't be too concerned.

Wallymn - Not sure I have any way of recording it but I'll look into that.

i believe theres a ECU flash for the V6 genesis transmission.
canada doesnt have it yet.. but i know the american markets do..
ask your local dealer about the flash. not all technicians are up to date for the reprogramming of the car they are working on.
