  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

There was a Mercedes S550 parked in the same lot as me today, and I noticed the stiking similiarity in the design of the rear ends. So I pulled up next to it and took this picture. Unfortunately, we were in an underground parking lot, so the lighting is poor. But you should be able to see the design similarities.

There is some similarity especially the trunk lid shape (bustle). Later models w/ the dual oval exhausts look even more alike IMO. In fact, if the taillights didn't have the stripes and instead were red and white like the Genesis I'd say they would look very similar. The single biggest difference being the taillights on the Genesis stretch onto the trunk lid whereas the ones on the S do not.

Very nice pictures -- better than what I posted.

Love the Genesis in that color, btw.

I'm trying to buy one of these for my parents. The maintenance is scary on these. An oil change is $200. Not sure why, yes it takes 9 quarts of 0W-40 Mobil 1, but last time I checked. It doesn't cost 22 bucks a quart. From what I can tell on the Merc forums, this car has been good so far. My mechanic says it's too early to tell, but that mechanically these things are very good, but it's the electronic systems that no one can seem to get sorted.

I just traded an E320 for the Genesis 3.8. The two service programs, A and B service, cost about $180-200 and $400-500 respectively. Rather than just checking all the key points on the maintenance list they did all the work whether it was needed or not. My dealer's [Wilmington NC] service rep would come to me with a solemn face and announce that I needed about $3500 worth of work, brakes, motor mounts, etc. The car had 150K on the clock. Then I took it to a reliable independent mechanic who works mostly on German cars. He told me NONE of it needed to be done. If they can't sell enough cars they can try to sell maintenance, I guess.

Yeah, dealers make nothing on new car sales, it's pretty much mostly on financing, service, parts and trying to gain market share. The funny thing is that the german manufacturers will tell you that these services will cost 2-3 times more than a japanese car. At the end of the day a car is steel, rubber and plastic, it's all the same components, same service, so I'm not sure what I'm paying for except maybe a loaner and some nice espresso, oh and a fancy badge and feeling like I'm at the top of the food chain.

I'm sorry I just don't see how these two cars are any similar in the rear...may be the exhaust a little...but other wise I just don't see it, how ever I can definitely see how similar the front is IMO at least.

The bustle trunk design, chrome strip over the license plate, dual oval exhaust tips, and shark fin antenna (a fairly common 'feature' on newer luxury cars) all combine to give it a similar vibe. Again, not indistinguishable, but quite similar IMO.

Yeah, in the design world the bulging trunk design was called the "Bangle butt", for BMW designer Chris Bangle. It was functional, but really ugly. The Benz and Hyundai have the same design, but a toned down version.

I think the E Class looks quite a bit like a Genesis from the back.

It's been stated before but the new E class looks a lot like the previous gen Sonata from the back. Especially the tail lights.
