  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone experienced a noise in the rear, roughly about 50 mph. It is a slight hum, but getting worse. My car has 35K miles on it.

First check your tire wear. Increase the air pressure to max for tire and check for noise. then decrease the air pressure to about 25 lbs. and check the noise. If pitch of noise changes or it goes away in one of the test then its tire related. Look for the simple first.

It is in the differential and may be TSB

I know this is an old thread but this problem is still around. I asked the dealer to have his Master Tech take a ride with me and sit in the rear seat. He had no problem identifying a rear differential whine. It comes in around 45 when coasting and will disappear immediately when I touch the accelerator. It's been in my 2012 since day one and I now have 13K on the clock. The dealer promptly contacted Hyundai and within a few minutes a new rear axle was on order. They expect it in three days or so. Although this was something new for my particular dealer, it certainly wasn't new to the Hyundai service rep. He admitted to the dealer that it has been an ongoing issue. I've said all that to say this, "If you are experiencing this issue, it's no problem to get a new axle from Hyundai". BTW, it also comes with a free 4 wheel alignment. Of course that's a must.

UPDATE:
New rear axle arrived within a week but I had to go out of town so I declined the installation until I returned. I didn't want to take any risks of anything going wrong with their install while on the road away from home. I returned last week and the new axle was installed yesterday. All is well, the whine is no more. They told me my alignment was slightly out as well and so that's corrected. I think I'm back to perfect now.

I have a clunk in the rear diff. I've seen other post on it. Anyone (engineer) have a solution for it yet??

Yes, put your gear selector in "D" and head toward your dealer to obtain warranty service.

Great response!! What I was asking was, have they found a fix for it. The car only has 1428 miles on it. I've talked with a few owners that have had it replace more than once. And as for the "D", I prefer manual.

GF drove the Genny to dealer for rearend clunk. After an hour and a half they handed her the keys and said all of the noise it normal. She suggested they have a technician call me direct. They didn't even drive the car. Claimed the noise was transfer of load in the rear on a limited slip diff. Then blamed it on the dual mass flywheel.

After I spoke "harshly but intelligently" to him, they magically found three bolts that held the diff in finger tight. Amazing!! 1500 miles on the clock and it's "normal"

Sad part is they wouldn't produce paperwork that stated any repairs made.

What Georgia dealer is this?

Having the same humming issue with mine as well. A hair under 15K on the odometer. Seems to hum or whine when decelerating, or coasting, around 45 - 60 mph.

You have the same model as me. Sounds like maybe a bad run of rear diffs on the 2012 3.8's. My replacement is whisper quiet. It shouldn't be any problem to get it replaced; at least it wasn't for me. Good luck...

My dealer isn't all the best...it will be fun there.

I guess for now, I feel fortunate that it was not the diff. Don't get me wrong. I've raced with this type of rear end for years. They do make noise. But nothimg like this. The center section was loose in the mounts.

The dealer is Team @ Mall of Georgia. Don't get me wrong all service departments are the same. It has become standard operating procedure to hire someone young and well spoken. Customers won't snap on someone who obviously doesn't have responsibility or knowledge. They are called assistants. They don't know cars.

"Cust states clunk in rear. Check and advise." Is how the work order was written. What I told the young person was,"Under forward or rearward initial engagement there is a clunk under back seat. Also driveline vibration during moderate downshift deceleration" Sounds the same right??

Have you done any repairing or something with this then you hear that noise or suddenly its coming? Check the tires may be something rubbing with the tires and giving the noise or might be another issue so bring it to car care center to identify the issue.

Rear End Whining or Roaring Sound

2012 to 2016 Genesis Sedans
My 2012 has a rear whining sound when I let off the accelerator form about 46 mph down to 35 mph.

I'm curious does anybody else have this problem. Most owners don't realize this because they listen to the radio or talking on the Cell phone. I drove Sedans most model years all the way to 2016 and could hear this roaring whining sound. I'd appreciate some feed back. Hyundai put 3 rear ends and a new drive shaft in my car and it's still making the same sound. Either the gears aren't mfg. properly or it possibly could be a assembly problem or just maybe a Engineering screw up that Hyundai doesn't want anybody to find out about!

Thanks
Randal

Original 2009 Genesis 4.5 owner, put 150,000 fairly trouble free miles on car. Bought a used 2013 Equus Ultimate in 2014, with 10k miles. Replaced Air Cond compressor @ 50k. At about 65k started to hear rear hum or growl over 65 mph. Thought it was tires on proved payment. I drive from Paso Robles, CA to Denver and return, almost once a month. I'm on a variety of surfaces and listen to Sirus, "books on tape", and iPod music. Looked tires over carefully for rubbing - found none. Now, with 72k on the car, the noise is getting louder and I devote a lot of attention, now that I am alerted. This car has air ride, really smooth and quiet, a tremendous car - as a former Lexus LS 400 owner. I have to drive 250 miles for Equus dealer warranty service. I need resolution before warranty expires @80k. It's really hard having to drive 250 miles, have them look at the car, and if they keep it for several days, even supplying a rental car, means 500 round trip miles to leave & return, then 250 miles to return home. I would appreciate any answers, dealer supplied, as to what the problem really is. Also your opinion. What finally caused the dealer to replace transmissions or differential? Thanks

I have a similar humming noise on coasting around 45 mph on 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L AWD. I noticed this around 7K miles. It is at the dealer for investigation. Will post again when they report...
