  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So my genesis only came with one key. I asked the dealership what the cost of another fob would be and they quoted me $400...
Is there a reasonable way to get this done?

Order one of the $100 +/- ones from eBay, have the key cut for about $25, then have the dealership program it for about $60. I think that's about as cheap as you can get away with.

See that is what my first instinct was but they quoted me 115 for the programming alone... any alternatives?

if you get out for less than 200.00 you will be lucky. Its a luxury car and you will find that service and repairs will cost more than a Ford or Chevy. FYI transmission service for a 4.6 v8 Genesis can run 600.00 to 800.00, spark plugs 12.00 to 15.00 each. OE Front brakes 300.00 not including rotors.

I paid $400+ for a spare Fob - purchased, programmed, and cut (the metal key) at the dealer.

I doubt that a dealer would even look at one purchased on the 'Net

And, a local locksmith wanted $60 to cut the blank "sidewinder" key that came with the fob.

I would have insisted that the dealership supply the car with two sets of keys, or knock $400 off the final price.

Genesis to purchase = not a big wallet car.

Genesis to repair and maintain = Big Wallet Car.

$400 is not too far off, if sold at list price. List on the fob is $329.94 and the key is $10.52. So at $115 programming (which is ridiculously high), they actually cut you a small deal on the key and fob. Most Hyundai dealers charge half hours worth of labor. $115 sounds like they are charging you a full hour, which is really high for a 15 minute job. We only charge $40 at my dealership. If you bought it from a Hyundai dealer and it was sold as a "Certified Pre-Owned" it's supposed to come with a 2nd set.

Can get a Korean version Fob for $100 but doesn't come with a key. Has the wings on the back instead of Hyundai Logo. You have to swap the guts out in order to use it though.

As a tech and someone who's been in the auto industry as long as I have, I find this hilarious.

12-15 dollar plugs are common with a LOT of cars. Even some very low end base model cars require Iridium plugs anymore.

"it's a luxury car, not a Ford or Chevy" is a hilarious line. As if HYUNDAI as a brand is luxury over Ford or Chevy. I think "it's a luxury car, not an Aveo or Fiesta" would have made sense. Man, I can't wait to see how the luxury options on the new Accent stack up against the new Ford Fusion.....

I really don't like the "it's a luxury car" excuse for things because it isn't true. It's a Hyundai with their first attempt at luxury options. It rides rougher than it's competition but comes with more doodads for less money. It's an amazing bargain for a luxury-ish car but parts are not expensive and repairs don't take any special processes either. I'm halfway into removing the drivers side head from the engine and so far have been extremely impressed with the cost of parts and ease of service. This is actually one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on. The whole "well it's a luxury car so expect everything to be hard and expensive" idea is so ignorant.

Yeah stealerships wanting $400+ for a fob is a bit greedy. But when transmissions are $15k+ and repairs are not an option... it alters one's perspective, would you agree?

That's why so many of us with 5+ yr old cars recommend extended warranties. When the head unit, radar module, ABS module, tranny, or engine needs major work, the repair bill will put a major hole in your wallet.
