In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi all,
When changing the cabin air filter on my 2010 4.6, I hyper-extended the glove box and the piston that makes it "slow down" when opening broke its top off.

I got a new part on eBay, but I am having a lot of trouble getting to the old piston. How exactly do you remove the glove box? There are 3 screws at the top and a nut in the back. I removed all of them and still can't get it out... checked the hmaservice site and couldn't find any help. It looks like it is impossible to replace the piston without removing the box. Anybody done it?

Thanks in advance,

juryduty

I ended up Googling a video of how to do it. The video didn't quite do it all as maybe I had a different version from them. In the end, it is pretty simple. To describe it isn't quite as easy.
going only by memory, there are two thumb tabs (one on each side) that need to have the tab pulled out (pushed in?) from their safety hole. Once that is done, there is only the piston.
If I remember correctly, the video said to push the tabs in when they needed to be pulled out (or it was vice-versa). Once I figured that out, it was pretty easy.

It looks like there aren't any on eBay at the moment, but the part number for my 2010 4.6 is 84545-3M000.

Yes scomack please post a link to the video if you have one! That would be awesome! For the locking tabs, I think you might be referring to the tabs used to open the bottom part of the box (the part that drops down). I can't see how to replace the piston just opening that, it seems like you need to get behind it somehow.

I have the same problem-I leaned too hard on the door and caused the piston to pull out from its cylinder and it did not seem that I could replace it without removing part of the dash and/or the glove compartment box. I am living with the glove compartment door that comes down immediately. Any suggestions for an easy fix will be appreciated.

I did exactly the same thing. My dealer ordered a new piston and replaced it under warranty admitting that it shouldn't come apart. I didn't watch them do it but was told they had to remove the glove box. The service manager said it was an easy fix, but again, I didn't see it for myself.

Seasons greetings,

While replacing my cabin filter the glove box piston popped loose....would have been nice had they mentioned this in the manual but I should have seen it none the less. Thought I was in for a hassle replacing it but upon further investigation I could see that it just might snap back into place. With the glove box lowered you can see an opening on the left. With a mirror you can see a hollow tube that swivels and it has two sets of two little teeth that match the light grey cap that came off. With one hand below to guide the piston in and push the cap on and one hand above to hold the tube firmly I was able to snap the cap back on. It's a little tricky but no need to remove the entire box. It's lowering slowly now....permanent fix??...time will tell.

Please help I replaced my cabin filter and broke one of the side stop clips. In the process I found the reason that the glove door no longer has a soft opening. Is there anyplace in the usa where these parts can be purchased? 2010 genesis 3.8
