Ridiculously low MPG on GV70. Anyone knows why?

Highway mileage is good (22-25), but for everyday commute to work, I get 14-16 for 3.5 with light to medium traffic. That's the mileage I see in the system, and actual might be worse.
I'm not heavy on gas pedal, and mostly drive in comfort mode.

I have a 22 2.5T with the prestige trim. I'm more than happy with the vehicle - plenty of power and smooth as silk. The images is a summary of the gas milage so far - all of it using an app. When I have done longer highway trips I'm getting 30 mpg or above (<8 l/100km). When I've been in stop and go city driving I'm getting around 20 mpg or just over 11 l/100km. All in all I've been averaging 24.9 mpg or 9.46 l/100km for the first 9500km. Not bad considering the EPA estimate is 24.

Here are my logs and stats via my Fuelly app. One thing to note my recent MPG has dropped and I attribute that fact I've been using remote start to let the vehicle warm up as the temps get colder and the winter bend gas. I would wager 3-4 times a tank I remote start my GV70 and let it warm up for 6-10 minutes before I get in and start driving. The worst MPG I record was 20.29 and I know exactly what that tank was. I was in Kansas City and spent two long commutes in stop and go traffic on I-435 and I-35 downtown. I've been very happy with my mileage.

Interesting trend chart. Makes sense, generally gas mileage is lower in the winter in cold climates not accounting for remote start and idling warm ups.

Agreed. I also know personally I do a lot more city driving during the winter teamed up with remote starts. During the summer I'm driving to other cities to golf, attend events, visit friends, etc. During the winter my drives consist mostly of running errands in town. Which is also why the frequency of my fill-ups are less frequent in the fall and winter for the most part. It's a trend I've noticed over 10+ years of tracking all my gas consumption.

My latest fuel-up should be my worst MPG yet. I was stuck in traffic and moved MAYBE 5 blocks in 40 minutes last night while attending a concert. Then a lot of stop and go traffic leaving as well. I think I noticed 18.9 MPG since my last fill-up when I pulled into the garage last night. Although I am hoping the engine auto on/off saved me a fair amount of gas.

It’s got less than 500 miles, light driving to store, post office, Home Depot, etc which are less than 20 miles away. Primarily use comfort setting. Ive been seeing ~13.5mpg which I found very alarming, but continue to monitor to see if anything changes. I don’t it was odd to see such a low number, but I understand there could be a number of variables… Will also try to take her out on the highway for a 40+ min drive to see what I get. When I saw someone else experiencing the same thing I just had to drop a comment as it’s the very reason I joined the forum.

1300 miles and the mpg is pretty bad. It sucks fuel. Maybe it’s designed this way to keep the dollar circulating. I’m doing my share. Our 3.5 came with a large sponge.

I get 25-26mpg in my 3.5 on my commute, I get around 20 on short trips, and I have a JB4 and drive like a madman. Driving in eco mode with the coast setting turned on and not using cruise makes a huge difference.

During your next few trips when you are expereincing the ~13.5 MPG, can you take a snap shot of your trip stats? Perhaps the dash showing the miles driving, time, and MPG. I'd love to see what is going on there.

Did you notice a decrease in l/km now that your G is fully broke in?

Gas mileage varies based on driving habits. the best I managed in the winter season at around -15 degrees with 18 inch wheels with the 3.5SP model is 7 to 7.5L/100km, a mix of 90% highway, and 10% city.

The average speed was between 85 to 95km/hour.

The trick to getting good gas mileage is to pay attention to the fuel consumption gauge (the one right down the middle). Try squeezing/modulating the gas pedal for optimal power delivery, keeping the RPM under 1600. The turbo won’t spool up as often, thereby drastically lowering your overall gas consumption.

On your previous car, how did your actual MPG compare to that vehicles EPA rated MPG? If it was considerably lower than the EPA rating, it would indicate the issue is your personal driving style.

I'm averaging about 14.7 MPG, and it's likely my fault. I have a heavy foot, don't always drive in comfort mode, and like speed, so I need to adjust my driving habits to see if I get the mileage advertised.

My driving habits are the same on each of our rides. Our GV70 gets horrible mileage. Don't blame the way you drive.

Crazy thing is the 3.5T gets similar mileage as my old C63 AMG which had a 6.2 liter V8!

For those looking to save money via better fuel economy, be aware of how Albert tuned the throttle mapping in the different drive modes: What I notice is in Comfort Mode, the throttle has some real range in it, allowing one to feather the throttle. Try that.
