Road Noise and Wear Down of Tires... Anyone Else???

I purchased a 2011 Genesis 4.6 in October of 2011. It was demo'd with 3700 miles on it. It currently as of today has 9,452 miles on it. My father borrowed it one afternoon and said the noise coming from the front left tire was driving him crazy. I told him I never heard it, but now seem to think I just got used to it over time. After taking it to my dealership, I was told that the tires just needed rotation. Tires were rotated at 8400 miles. Three days ago I noticed my front left tire (same one I had noise in) has worn down completely in the middle... so bad that it won't past inspection. I took it back to the dealership to be told that the tire wore down because the tires weren't rotated every 5000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem or hear excessive road noise?? I just don't understand why all tires didn't wear down if it was a tire rotation issue. Thanks for any help or words of advice on this.

If you have the OEM Dunlops on the car, then it's just the tires'. They are horrible, Hyundai has switched to different tires as of 2012 due to the horrible dunlops. Many people report getting less then 20,000 miles out of the tires before they were noisy, uncomfortable ride, bald etc.

The main problem you describe is that the tire was overinflated causing the middle of the tread to wear. Underinflated tires wear the outsides of the tread etc.

This is why it's extremely important to check your tire pressure and ensure they are what the car recommends on the driver side piller and the owners manual.

I am not sure that the problem described is definitely over-inflation, even though worn on the center of the tire "usually" does mean that.

Many people have noticed very weird things happening to the front-left Genesis tires (especially Dunlop’s) due to some alignment problems that seem to be inherent in the car (and not easy to fix). Another symptom is that the car tends to pull to the left.

I replaced all 4 OEM Dunlop’s when my front-left went bad, even though the other tires were only half worn. After I got 4 new Michelin Destiny's, I got my car aligned at a place that does a road test in addition to measuring the manufacturer specs. Car still pulls a little to the left, but not as much as before. I will get more frequent rotations than before.

Thank you guys for helping me make sense of this. I will be looking into a different make of tires soon as it annoys me to think that I will be constantly replacing the Dunlops. I did check pressure on all of my tires after the rotation and each tire read differently, which made me believe the dealership didn't check the pressure at all. It ranged from rear right tire having 28 to the front right having almost 45. I adjusted them all to the manufacturer's specs and will definitely know keep an eye on them. What tires did Hyundai put on the 2012's??

Not sure what tires they put on the 2012, but when I replaced my Dunflops with Continental ExtremeContact DWS, it made a world of difference in not just road noise but also traction. I went with DWS (which has some snow capability) because although I live in Austin, I wanted to be able to drive to places that might get snow (wife's family is all from New York).

Go to another dealer or mechanic. Who ever you talked to is either incompetent or blowing smoke up your skirt. You've got a problem (most likely alignment) that should be fixed...for free...under warranty.

Tires don't wear abnormally in the middle just because they are not rotated every 5000 miles, especially if you have less than 10K total. Improper inflation and mis-alignment are the primary causes of abnormal wear patterns. Your mechanic should have checked both.

My '12 has Michelin Green X tires. I have a slow leak in one that needs attention.

The OP's car seems to have been a demo car. All the more reason to get a 4-wheel alignment, rotate at proper intervals and keep an eye on inflation every 10 days, or so.

My Dunlops were awful from day one. No traction in snow, very harsh riding on rough roads. If you look at the reviews on TireRack, they rank dead last or next to last in almost every category.

At 8600 miles I finally had enough and also replaced them with Continental ExtremeContact DWS. The difference between these and the Dunflops are like night and day. The Contis are great in snow and give the Genesis a much softer, smoother ride.

The Genesis is a great car and a great value but Hyundai really screwed up big time when it came to the tires.

I would recommend that you purchase tires from 3 of the first 4 on the list in the link below (skip the MXM4). Probably the Michelin Primacy MXV4 is the best overall.

I was all set to buy the conti DWs, when I saw an article in Consumers Reports, rating the Cooper Zeon RS--A above the Conti in all fields, I think it was the Sept/Oct. issue. Glad I bought them, excellent handling in rain, dry and SNOW. Did I mention QUITE? No noise at all. Would buy again!

yes, i read that article too, and was intrigued by the Cooper tires.
i tend to trust CR more as they use objective methodology in evaluating the tires.

where did you find those Cooper tires?

Cooper are good tires. I believe they are the only American tire company too.

Did you get the RS3-S or the RS3-A? According to Cooper's website, the RS3-S is a summer-only tire. They also seem harder to find than the Contis.

Since he said "RS--A" I assume it is the RS3-A all season tires (not the summer tire). My local Discount Tire shop can get them in about 3 days (according to their website), and I assume most other Discount Tire shops can also.

I also am riding on the Cooper RS3-A's. I was all set on the Conti DWS until I saw the CR report and then the same week a local dealer had the Coopers on sale, buy 3 get 4th free plus a $75 rebate. Only paid $113 per tire for the 18". Only have had them on for 2000 miles but they have passed the first test, my wife. Last winter she constantly complained when it snowed but she has not said one word this winter. Also much smoother and quieter but I figure anything would be better than the Dunlops. They seem to be as good as the Dunlops were when they were new. But in the snow the Coopers are 1,000 times better. And yes they are made in the USA, I checked the tire. Got them at Mills Fleet Farm a local chain of stores somewhat similar to a Home Depot.
