  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Figured I'd share the experience with you all. I'll be driving from South Dakota to Ohio for some much needed vacation. I haven't decided what route I'll be taking yet but I've done the drive at least 10 times; meaning I know where I'm going. That tells me I can choose from the three routes as the drive goes on. The weather looks to be nice and sunny. I'll post pictures when I make pit stops as I'm in no rush to get there. I was quoted at $3k for a wrap so I figured I'd wait and use some painter's tape for the time being. It's obviously not perfect as it's my first time doing it. The adhesive on the tape won't hurt the paint so I was happy about that. No need for the flaming comments regarding the tape job LOL it saves me brushing the sh*t out of the paint. Better safe than sorry!

Distance: 1200 miles

Stops: 3 for gas/food, 1 overnight (if traffic persists)

Updates as I go. Enjoy!

look at it this way. There's baby wraps, adult wraps and old codger wraps. You just ended up with the latter, not that there's anything wrong with a codger wrap, enjoy your trip. The last time I was that far West my wife discovered prairie dogs for the first time. I told her to leave them alone, the last thing I needed was pulling back into Miami with a back seat full of little critters eating grapes and singing Home On The Range

Somewhere in bum **** Iowa

I’ve saw 3 2nd Gens and 2 1st Gens. I’m carefully looking out for a Stinger.

I remember seeing a couple cars with similar wraps. I enjoyed the process as it’s domething I’ve never done. Car bras beat the crap out of the paint, I don’t trust them.

Looks good in the garage but thinking that will be a true ghetto wrap after a high speed run in the rain.

Holding up well @ 80mph 👌🏼

Still holding tight. Weather has been decent so that helps.

Which route did you take?

Ended very well. No “ghetto” tape job as it did rain for about a half hour and no residue from the tape. Took 4-5 minutes to peel. I’ll be doing it again for long journeys. I saw some people commenting on a forum search that it’s the dumbest and tackiest thing to do. If you do it right the first time, there won’t be issues and it’ll last. I would recommend taking it off as soon as possible. I don’t trust the sun beating down on a car sitting in the sun.

I’ll be posting my return trip at the end of the week and what I’ll do differently with the tape. Have a good week guys 👍🏼

@ BlancaGenny- Looks like a great idea!

I am 72 & am planning to drive from
Calgary to Toronto & then to Philadelphia & return in July.
Probably put on 10000 kilometers.

Where did you buy the blue tape ? ( my car is even blue ;))
If I do a neat job it might not be that noticeable.
How long can I leave it on as we will be gone about 3 weeks ?Genesis may11.webp

Just out of curiosity do you guys think rock chips and sandblasting abrasion only happens on a road trip?

@dougmcp- just trying to reduce high speed bug infestation paint damage.
Doesn't seem to be an issue when I drive around town ( I'm retired) so seldom
on the freeway normally as I no longer have any commute at highway speeds.

Is that a 5.0? I'm about to engage in combat...I mean, make an offer, to my local dealer for a 5.0 Ibiza. It's been on their lot for about a month, and I get the feeling that this was one of the least, if not THE least popular colors. I like it, but I can use that as leverage to maybe get a lower price.

Also, where in Philly? I grew up there and was just there last week. ;)

@sgrenard, It's a 2016 3.8 AWD Luxury that I bought
with 10900 Kilometers in January for $31000 Canadian all in.

I get lots of compliments on the Ibiza Blue colour.
Most importantly Better Half Loves it.
Happy wife /Happy life.

I graduated from Haverford High in 1964. Havertown - Go Fords!

Thanks @rroyce42 you can get it at any hardware store. It’s delicate surface painter’s tape. It’ll take a roll per tape job depending how high you go on the hood. It’s about $6.99/roll. CAN will obviously be different but you can get an idea.

If you zoom in on my pictures, you’ll noticed I started at the top of the hood and worked my way down. The way you lay the tape will keep it from getting picked up by the wind. Just make sure you overlap enough. Let me know if you need any help with it, I can try to post a time lapse when I put it on for the return trip.

It’s not for road chips. I think I now hold the record for most bugs killed on a trip. The amount of rubbing and damage dried bugs can do to the paint is not something I want. I bought my car with my money, like most of us do. I like taking care of my possessions so I do 👍🏼

Which route did you take?

Down and over through Iowa to Peoria, IL to Indy to Dayton. That’s probably number 9 on how many times I’ve done it. Hopefully the last or near it.

Finally some relaxation.

Can’t say I’ve seen any here in good ol’ Dayton but there was one at The Greene over in Beavercreek. Thé Lady wanted to get massages and happened to be an open spot next to one. It was the G80. I was a peasant for a few hours.

Unfortunately, vacation always comes to a natural end. Enjoyed the drive and the time back there. I was quite happy to see a Stinger in Indiana. Saw a Ferrari 488 and two Audi R8's. That's about all that is worth mentioning. I don't want to make that drive again unless it's 1200 miles in another direction. The scenery gets boring after the 3rd or so time.

The Genesis only encountered one issue. The XM radio cut out once about 3 hours into my drive to Ohio. My first stop for fuel solved the issue as I turned it off and was out of the car for 10 minutes. Quite quirky but I have read that it's an issue with the 15's. Other than that, "Pearl" did well!

Ironically, the car that I want (5.0 Ibiza Blue base) is at a dealer in Dayton. I may have to fly up there. Which would be kind of crazy. It's a 12 hour drive home...

I've been driving that route (I70, I74, I80) round-trip at least once every summer for the last 12 years. Some years it's been two or more trips. I know what you mean about the bugs. It seems like the worst part of the trip for bugs is between Peoria and the Iowa state line. And it seems to make no difference what time of the day or night one drives that stretch. The air is always full of bugs. I carry a bottle of Turtlewax Bug and Tar remover with me to clean them all off just as soon as I stop for the day. Some of the bugs are really big, too!
