  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was washing my car today and noticed this huge rock chip on my driver side A-pillar area, can't believe I didn't notice it earlier. Does anyone have experience with these touch up paint pens? And how much do you think a dealership or paint shop would charge to fix it?

i had a rock chip the first week, used a touch up pen that I bought at Oreillys. Worked well for the 10 foot rule (looks good enough from 10 feet away) but those paint pens are hard as hell to use accurately and well. Also I couldnt get the filled in chip and the existing paint to look flush. Others might have more success than me, for some context I almost failed art class in middle and high school :p

Let us know if you end up getting ahold of a place to fix it. I'd be interested to see how much it costs.

I always recommend getting a Genesis (Hyundai) color matching paint pen. They come with a small brush tip for applying and a hard, chisel like grinder to buff away rough edges. It's best used on horizontal surfaces, but of course those never get hit. Use ancient Tibetan Asian Patience and have a paper towel or sponge handy to dab away excess and just do it in multiple, small layers allowing it to dry between.

By the time you finish you'll find another chip.

FINALLY got my touch up pen today from my dealership. It literally took 2 months. Haha.

You have to sand the finished chip repair to make it appear "level" with the surrounding paint. Then a little buffing or careful hand rubbing to remove the sand scratches. I use 2000 or 2500 grit wet-or-dry paper, always wet. Then about any orbital polisher with a orange pad & a little compound will literally make the chip "go-away".
Don't forget to use rubbing alcohol or similiar and clean the chip and area around it before you start the touch-up process and make coats VERY thin, takes couple days to do efficient repair of a chip.
