  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Came back from a couple of weeks in Palm beach.. The Genesis sat in the airport lot for 2 weeks.. The front rotors were very rusty... Cleared as the they were used but wow, I couldn't believe how rusty they were after 2 weeks... It was UGLY ....

Anybody know if there is a a way to avoid this?

Hey, Scott, try living 200 ft from Atlantic high tide. I had a 2001 Mazda Miata and a friend, also oceanfront, had a 1999. She drove hers everyday and had no rusting rotors. I drove mine quite infrequently and the rust NEVER came off the rotors. Just drive that car, bud.

No problem... I just haven't had a car's rotors rust up like this before...

It's normal. Cast iron will rust, it's cosmetic, just drive the car. Don't spray anything like WD-40, as it doesn't belong down there.

damn... just finished putting axle grease on the rotors...
:)

I wasn't thinking of coating the rotors in something just wondering if it was normal as I have been driving for about 23 years.. and this is the first time my rotors have rusted.

Rotors will rust overnight in NC with the mixed climate and changing humidity. The rotors on the three different brand cars I own all rust the same. I heard an auto salesperson gripe about it one day while getting some work done to my car. He said "I have to drive these cars around a lot to keep the rust knocked off the rotors because most customers don't understand that it's normal for them to rust".

I think this is normal to a certain degree. Go to any car dealership and cars that have been sitting a little while have very rusy rotors. Nothing to worry, as it's just surface rust and cleans off the 1st time the brakes are applied.

Folks that wash their cars at home, and just put them in the garage after drying the paint, find rusty brake rotors in the morning. A few taps of the brake pedal and the rotors are clean again. Perfectly normal. And, as others noted, just plain old humidity will end up rusting the rotors after a day or three.
