If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have been noticing that my Genesis rides rougher then the Infiniti I traded in. Very bumpy ride especially when people in back seat. I have checked the tire pressure and when cold they are below 32. Has anyone else noticed a rough ride?

Re: rough ride

I hope you don't mind, but I'm moving this into the Suspension area. I think it'll get the right "focus" here...

Which Infiniti did you trade in? I forget...

The Q45 which was a big car and rode very smooth. I did not notice this riding rough until last night when someone in the back complained and I felt it myself. I will check with the dealer but thought maybe someone else hs noticed

Re: rough ride

Before buying mine, I test drove the Genesis twice. The first time I brought a friend along - a car enthusiast - to get his opinion. He expressed only two concerns: whether the Hyundai name will retain its value, and he thought the ride in the back seat was rough.

It's possible the rear suspension is configured in such a way that it transfers too much movement to passengers in the back seat. I do not feel anything like that in the front seat. I think the car rides really well however, I'm always in the driver's seat.

Re: rough ride

I noticed something similar while riding across town a couple weeks ago. We had the car loaded with 4 people and some stuff in the trunk and there were a couple of larger undulations in the road that made me feel like I was in the back of the schoolbus again. I was in the driver-side rear seat.

Re: rough ride

This is beginning to sound like an "issue". If we think this is something that needs dealer focus, we'll move this discussion into the Issues forum... The Genesis should NOT be riding this rough for back seat passengers.

Re: rough ride

I had 5 passengers the other day, and people in the back seat were also complaining about the rough ride. I can't tell from the driver's seat.

Re: rough ride

I wonder if this is a characteristic of the car - something everyone is dealing with - or a unique issue with some Genesis vehicles.. We'll have to watch this closely. I hope people will continue to submit their experiences...

Re: rough ride

Haven't heard this one bit it sounds like a trend - don't know what Hyundai can do about it though.

Strange that the front ride would be smooth but rear passengers find it "rough".

Re: rough ride

To add more fuel to the fire, here is a quote from Automobile Magazine's review. However, no other reviewer has mentioned it (that I have found).

“But add a few bumps and the Genesis takes a turn for the worse. Unlike any of the other sedans, the Hyundai falls completely to pieces on twisty, bumpy back roads. Push it hard and pavement irregularities send the Genesis heaving and wallowing down the road with the traction control light flashing and the steering wheel shuddering. When you’re hustling with a car full of passengers, its soft rear suspension crashes onto its bump stops over moderately rough roads.” Automobile Magazine October,2008

Re: rough ride

not to be quick to judge, but users shouldn't be experiencing the issues that they are. i wouldn't be surprised that this is in fact a defect. probably an unfixable defect. i hope hyundai replaces the cars quickly since they're using this as a test to see if people are willing to spend the money for a hyundai luxury division.

i love hyundai but hyundai corp should have have made sure that none of these cars have defects even if that came as a financial loss to them. ppl spent good money on these cars and deserve the car that they purchased.

how embarrassing. has anyone read the user posts in edmunds.com? that's why i won't buy a hyundai just yet.

Re: rough ride

I'm moving this to the ISSUES forum. Just like Cadillac had a rear-end issue with their first CTS-V, this is a problem that must be addressed...

I smell a troll.

i had to look up what "troll" meant. i'm no troll. i just strongly believe that of all models, the Genesis should be flawless considering they spent 5 yrs and $500 million on developing the entire car. besides, they tout the suspension as being very sophisticated and very expensive, so users shouldn't have harsh ride issues. just my opinion. again. i love hyundai, but they need to try harder for their customers.

There are a lot of Genesis owners on this board; not all of them are reporting "rough" rides. Why don't you have the dealer drive the Gen and you sit in the back seat. That's the only way you'll be able to form a true opinion on whether Hyundai has "failed" their customers or not.

Hobbes,

Jwaters can clarify, but I don't think he was referring to you personally when he made the troll comment.

I have always taken that comment (on car forums like this) to be some sort of problem that is difficult to identify or determine the root cause...

I don't see any trolling - so let's move on...

I tend to feel that all the Genesis' will have this issue. Maybe some people in the back seats just don't complain. However, I'm a pessimist. I like to assume the worst so that in the event it happens, I'm not shocked. If the worst does not happen, than I'm very happy.

It would be nice if we could get two cars together - one with a rough ride complaint - and one without - and then do a careful comparison.

On another note.. It sounds to me as if the rear suspension is actually very soft - but over bumps, it mushes down far enough to hit the bump stops. Something that actually stiffening the suspension would fix.. Any thoughts on that?

"its soft rear suspension crashes onto its bump stops over moderately rough roads"

Here is a part of an other review (Autoblog) that comments on the rear suspension. I am not trying to be negative with these posts, but I do have some concern. I plan to replace my 530i with the Genesis, but I would like to get to the bottom of this possible problem. On my first test drive of the Genesis I did notice some "porpoising." However, on my second drive I got the car up to 90+ mph and it was beautifully smooth and quiet.

Here is the quote from Autoblog:

"Thanks to an impressively stiff chassis (more rigid than the 5 Series, E-Class, and LS 430) and lightweight aluminum suspension components, it takes bumps and potholes in stride. However, if the vehicle is faced with a set of rhythmic dips in the road, the softly sprung Genesis gently porpoises a bit more than expected. At legal speeds it was hardly noticeable. However, in excess of about 85 mph it became unsettling. While the spring rates seemed adequate, increased damping would stabilize everything in the easily attained triple digits. Of course, the engineer's compromise on shock valving gave the Genesis a buttery-smooth ride on all but the most undulated roads."

I don't think you quite understand the realities of car building. No vehicle is perfect, not even those made by Lexus. To expect Hyundai to replace all Genesis models sold that may have issues is silly and completely unrealistic. Should they fix known issues/problems? Yes. Should they buy back a car because someone finds the ride in the rear seat rough? Absolutely not. Our society is quickly becoming a nation of whiners and self-entitled babies. There IS such a thing as expecting too much. This isn't to say that the OP doesn't have a valid complaint (I would get this checked out, as my Genesis doesn't seem to have this issue).

Also, I would take anything I read on Edmunds w/ a grain of salt. Just last week it was discovered that someone posted a very negative review of the V8 Genesis claiming to be an owner. (The V8 Genesis isn't even on sale yet)
