  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

anyone having some slight issues with shifting into 1st or other gears when the car is cold?....shifting gets smoother when warm, but ive noticed that gear one is especially rough when going into gear when first starting up...i live in sunny california, and the car is gargaged....so honestly the fluid should not be that thick when cold...anyone experiencing these symptoms as well with the 6spd manual?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Definitely can be rough. I find its a lot smoother if you are completely stopped when shifting into first. The colder it gets and if you are moving, the car hates first gear.
I hope you didn't expect a silky smooth german gear box in your genesis though. The gear box is probably the weakest part of the car. :(

I liked the car but intentionally didn't buy it and have looked elsewhere due only to the gear box. I really like the shift feel of Miata and Cayman. Gear box of Corvette sucked too in my opinion.

Change out your tranmission fluid to a fully synthetic kind like a Red Motul. On other forums, they've mentioned that it helps out a lot.

Do not shift into 1st while moving, unless VERY slow. Most cars do not like this. First to second was rough on every m/t I've had, I figure it's normal. Went to a short throw shifter by TWM, definitely an improvement. I will do the synthetic gear oil thing. Can't hurt.

I too am having problems with rough shifting. I have a 2011 3.8 Track and have tried changing to Redline MT-90 Transmission fluid. The shifting was "softened" for about a day or two, but is still rough.

As far as expecting the shifting to be smooth, I traded a 2004 Acura TL with 112,000 miles on her, and the shift (through all 6) was as smooth as a babys butt from the first day to the last, and yes I expect my GC to shift as smoothly.

Rough shifting really takes away from the driving pleasure we all get from running with a manual tranny.

I have been in touch with Hyundai Motor America with my concerns, and they in turn have turned my case over to a Hyundai regional customer relations office. They have contacted me and will be setting up an appointment with a local (Hendersonville, NC) dealer for an inspection from one of their field engineers.

Let's see where this goes.

I've noticed some rough shifting on my 2011 Gen Coupe 3.8 Track as well. I'd be curious to see what they will do about it.

Yes.

See my entry of 01-10-2011.

Good to hear this thread is still alive. I'm awaiting for the shifting to feel smooth. I really liked what I felt from this car when I test drove it 1.5 years ago. The only thing which held me back with the shift feel. This car reminded me of an Integra I had about 20 years ago.

I don't think whatever we think will happen, will happen. We have to make it happen.

However I know this; if enough people complain out loud on forums like these, and go to the dealer and make complaints, it's a start and there's a paper trail documenting the problem.

If the dealer says "there's nothing we can do, that's the way they are," you have to take it to the next (corporate) level. If they get enough complaints, perhaps they will make an honest effort to fix the problem.

On the other hand, if the folks who are experiencing rough shifting don't make any noise about it, and just accept that that's the way they are, for sure nothing will change.

...why do you need to shift into first while you're moving?

every manual I've driven doesn't let me shift into first unless I'm coasting at like 7 mph.

first is such a short gear, you really can't just cram into it at 30 mph and expect good things to come of it...

By rough shifting do you guys mean that the shifter is crunchy and hard to get into gear? or do you mean that there is this thump and shaking of the (drivetrain?). I definitely experience both when the car is cold pretty much everytime.

I just wrote to the corporate office to express my concerns. Earlier this year I took my car to the dealer and they as expected "could not reproduce the problems." Does anyone have any updates on whether something will be down for 2011 problems or are we just waiting till our car stops working?

Lastly you guys mentioned switching transmission fluid...does that void your warranty? Thanks.

I have a 2013 3.8 rspec 1 year old with 10K. The manual transmission is a bit hard to live with. Hot or cold it's all the same. I thought it was me; however, I've had all kinds’ cars with manual transmission over past 26 years. Example: my 96 Miata has over 200k on the original clutch and brakes.... Used, but the "Best" $1,500 I ever spent.
Back to KINCHI the Genesis Coupe - 5th gear heavy grind unless very slowly shifted. Violent 5th-4th gear downshift engagement (snapping/grinding sensation) unless very slowly shifted. 2nd gear is extremely clunky. 2nd gear will occasionally grind when shifting from 1st and will block me out until I am doing less than 20km/h. When downshifting from 3rd. Clunkiness when cold and it blocks me out of the gate from time to time!!!! That is, I must wait in neutral for a bit before I shift. The “manual shifting” issues, really restrict the car from its full potential. The transition seems to have issues synchronizing with the system... Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the car and real don't want to give her up!!! I hope a Hyundai has fix is in the pipeline.... Cheers!!
