So...I got into the car this evening, started it up, and my foot slipped off the brake onto the gas. My memory is a little fuzzy because of what happened next, but at the very least, I remember my foot slipping off the brake.

ANYWAY...the car didn't quite start...like the engine wouldn't turn over, but it just stayed at that "almost starting" noise. So I tried again. Same thing. Then I shut everything off, and the engine started up, but it sounded rough. And the check engine light came on, but no other messages. I turned it off and turned it on again. Rough with the check engine light.
So I turned it off and got out of the car, and there was strong smell of gasoline. Nothing dripping under the car. I was talking to a car-expert buddy of mine, and he suggested I wait and try it again, and that it was probably nothing. I'm wondering if my fumbling around flooded the engine or something. CAN you flood engines these days?

Anyone have any thoughts?
 
I bet that when your foot slipped off of the brake it cancelled the start command after fuel had already been injected into some cylinders. Then when you started it you got some misfires from excessively rich conditions in those cylinders. Do you have a code reader to see what triggered the CEL? I bet it runs fine today.

I don't have a code reader. But, I let the car sit overnight and it started right up. The Check Engine light stayed on though. My buddy said that if it was running fine, everything was probably OK, and that it would take 100 miles or so for the CEL to reset. I drove it down to the local dealer, figuring I should put a few miles on it to see how it's running.
Also, I made an appointment for an oil change while I was there. My car's at about 61,500 miles, and isn't due for an oil change until 63k, but it's been 11 months since my last change at 58k...

I once had a Honda Civic that on a couple occasions it would try to start and then just quit. Attempting to restart, it acted like there was no compression whatsoever. The engine spun over with zero effort. I thought for sure it broke the timing belt, but it was intact. I pulled the plugs and it reeked of fuel. Curious of how much fuel was in the cylinders, I spun the motor over but I had the plugs attached to the wires on top of the valve covers. It shot balls of fie out of the spark plug holes, nearly lighting the car on fire. Something in the computer just decided to flood the engine. Second time it happened, I just held my foot to the floor and it started much sooner.
