  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've owned this car for about 7 months .. generally love the car. Unfortunately, I've experienced a SAFETY HAZARD with the smart cruise control on about ten occasions. The sequence is smart cruise control engaged, with no traffic within a half mile or so ahead, and I get a sudden deceleration accompanied by a series of audible beeps for no apparent reason. A few days ago this happened three times in about five minutes while traveling a divided highway, daytime, good weather, no traffic nearby, at about 55 MPH. The car slowed aggressively to about 40 MPH wherein it "cleared" itself and started to reaccelerate to the set speed. This is alway alarming when it happens, but the SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD occurred on two separate occasions as follows: daytime, good weather, interstate travel .. at about 75-80 MPH with smart cruise control engaged, after passing a semi tractor trailer, I signaled a return to the right lane, the "blind spot" warning was not activated, and as I drove into the right lane the car suddenly decelerated .. aggressively .. with a semi tractor trailer bearing down on me with insufficient room to stop. On both occasions I had my right foot resting off the accelerator pedal when this occurred. Your first response is NOT to engage the accelerator, because it is both alarming & somewhat disorienting. In both of these cases (and in all cases) there was no traffic in front of me that was a factor. Frequency of this occurrence has recently accelerated and the response of Genesis has been totally unacceptable in time & priority. I intend to return the car to the company if it not properly remedied. As an active pilot & retired USAF fighter pilot, my reactions are better than most & I fear what might happen to others in a similar situation.

Did it start happening recently, or have incidents been spread out over the 7 months you've owned it?

So out of curiosity, how clean is the sensor cover in the front of the car? I wonder if it has something to do with glare or something else that might be messing with that sensor. Regardless, that should be a top priority for Genesis to fix!

Holy extreme reaction.. first, this has been covered in the forum already. You have a defective smart cruise computer that will need to be replaced. If you have experienced the problem several times, why continue to use it? Put the cruise into regular mode, check the mirrors for other vehicles and make a service call.

For a fighter pilot I would think your critical thinking skills would be better...

Not trying to defend him but you can't put cruise control on "normal" mode. If you have smart equipped, it's smart or nothing.

I have definitely not had that happen to me. I have had the odd time in a sharper corner where the smart cruise thought the car in the next lane was in front of me and slowed down. Annoying but I have had that happen on other vehicles with radar based cc.

Take to the dealer and see it spit out any error codes. If not I would insist that this completely unexpectable. You could possibly be hit in the back specially on the highway.

Let us know what the dealership and/or Genesis says. It definitely does NOT sound normal. I haven't had anything like this happen to me using smart cruise control, though I've only owned my car for 2 months.

Is Genesis's cruise control system the type that slows down and pulls over if you don't have your hands on the wheel? I don't think this is the case since there would be multiple warnings beforehand, but that function may be what's causing the random deceleration maybe?

If your hands are not on the wheel it cancels the LKAS and cruise so you just coast. It does not apply brakes.

How was this issue eventually fixed? My car has started to do the same thing, just wondering if it was fixed by replacing a defective computer as suggested.

Dealer found an “insect nest/cocoon on back side of front sensor; cleaned & proper operation resumed

Happened again .. once .. a few days ago .. plan to inspect back side of sensor soon
