  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Savage Geese Review of new G80

I don't know if I want to watch it... I recently watched his last review on the new TLX and he was just so biased towards it and not nearly objective enough.

It's a pretty good review. But he keeps pushing this false notion that the Genesis depreciates a lot when it's second only to the Lexus GS in holding its value in the segment.

You think he's biased? I think he tries to adopt the mindset of the "community" and not that of a professional reviewer.

Plus, I thought the TLX was honest. The debate he had with Jack about the "perception" of what a TLX was vs what it is was interesting.

Ok, I couldn't resist. Yeah, mostly a good review. I do like how he called out the dealer experience in the USA. My experience in Canada has been great but it's good that Genesis knows their dealers are dropping the ball. To say the dream team is re-inventing the wheel in terms of design... Not sure that's accurate. I think it's more that they didn't have the team in place when some of the designs were to far already.

For the TLX review, I thought he had too much nostalgia and wishful thinking with the TLX. Saying it drives better than the M340i... Seems very unlikely. I drove it the TLX back to back with my G70 and would take the G70 every day. He also thought the G70 shift speeds were really slow.. bad memory I guess?

Yeah, his complaint about the G80 going too far re-inventing the wheel was rather hypocrticial, because in his older G80 review, he claimed it was too close to Hyundai and not bespoke enough. Yet now that the G80 and Genesis as a whole has moved away entirely from Hyundai (sans dealerships) and are establishing their own brand identity, he claims that they're having an "identity crisis". Genesis just can't win.

I wish he went more into the technical detail, but he did say he will be saving that for his GV80 review.

As I've said before the Savage Geese review can be weird and breathtakingly complete. This one included:
One of the more thorough looks at the car. Sure shows what goes into making it quiet.

Oh, it was bizarre how he wouldn't hear any dissent from the 'new TLX is the best car ever' I've never heard him be such a fan boy, and so dismissive of both his fellow reviewer's opinion, and of the car's deficiencies. When he said it was better than the g70, the other reviewer in the seat next to him looked literally sick from biting his tongue.

The thing about the shift speeds is so ludicrous. The Smoking Tire was very impressed with the G70, and hated the TLX, and was especially critical of it's downshifts, and demonstrated the issue numerous times during the review. And then the brakes caught on fire and he had to stop. Literally caught on fire. Go watch the review. C'mon, Savage Geese, gosh. I would trust Matt Farrah any day of the week as a critical review of sporty and sport cars over SG. The guy can drive, and knows how cars are supposed to behave, and is a good judge of what is good vs what is bad, and he did not like the TLX.

To be fair to Mark, he considers the TLX as a better car than the G70 in its balance of sport and comfort, basically as a daily driver. Which is a perfectly reasonable thing to say. The TLX is a bigger car than the G70, so it will be more plush of a ride. Bear in mind, Mark almost bought a G80 last year and would have done so had the Hyundai dealership not screwed him over at the last minute. He puts his money where his mouth is.

As for the transmission, I think he was referring to the newer Sonata/Optima, which he had problems with in his review. Not the G70.

What I heard him say was it drives better than the base 300 and that you have to option the Bimmer way up for it to be noticibly better than the Acura.

Start at the 22:20 minute mark. He says he doesn't think the "3 series is fun" and there is nothing that's great until you get into a - then Mark says "M3" and he says yes.

I didn't hear Mark compare it to the G70. He just said it was a good middle ground.

I don't think that was the case. He said the 10 speed was better than what the Koreans were doing. He's comparing this car to other cars in the class, not lesser cars.

25:12 onward- Jack brings it up. Specifially, Mark says that the TLX is "more refined and balances everything better."

He just said that "it's better than what the Koreans are doing"- I didn't get the impression that he was comparing it directly to the G70. He himself said that the TLX isn't all that fast-shifting of a car, only that it goes into the right gear when he wants it to.

I think they move on from the G70 at that point but that's just my opinion

What else could he be comparing to? The only Korean's in the class are the Stinger and G70.

Exactly. He thinks the base Bimmer isn't fun. He says that all the time.

Hes right though , its not “fun” . I drove a 4 series grand coupe sedan, its was alright nothing to shabby. M340i or m3 would be considered fun , i mean i havent driven the 2018-2021 330i so maybe they tweaked it.

He didn't say the M340i was fun. It was limited into the 3 series.. Just the M3 was good enough to be considered fun...

I think Mark's points are that 1) Acura is aiming for reliable comfort for its customers and hits that target better than the competitors and 2) sport sedans aren't fun anymore so hit the compromise between comfort and sport not as well. That makes him disagree with Jack's point that the TLX vs the competition is a matter of taste preference, with the TLX being comfy and the other choices being sportier.

I made this comment elsewhere before. While most compact luxury sedans these days compromise for comfort these days, there are significant differences in performance between the TLX and the rest of the competitors especially when trying to get the best bang for your buck. The TLX is 9" longer than other compact luxury sedans, ~500 lbs heavier than RWD competitors, and 300-400 lbs heavier than the AWD versions and the Audi A4. The TLX gets 0-60 MPH in 6-7 seconds, while the German 4 cylinders do it in 5.2 seconds. You can't just write off these differences by saying other sport sedans are compromised too.
